Managing access at Helsinki Airport presents a significant challenge due to its extensive operations. With approximately 15,000 employees and pre-pandemic passenger numbers reaching between 60,000 and 70,000 daily, ensuring that only authorised individuals access restricted areas is crucial. The efficient movement of passengers, staff, and contractors aligns with Finavia's commitment to providing streamlined services. Consequently, Finavia sought advanced access control solutions to enhance security and convenience.
Enhancing Security and Convenience
For Finavia, the safety of both staff and customers is of utmost importance. The transition to keyless security solutions is a key priority to improve user convenience. Moreover, any new access control device must be compatible with securing various entry points, such as doors, cabinets, fences, and cargo areas. Seamless integration with existing access control systems and software is essential, along with meeting the site's safety, functionality, durability, and usability standards.
Comprehensive Access Control Solution
In partnership with ASSA ABLOY, Finavia has implemented a comprehensive range of solutions to address these security challenges. Helsinki Airport's access control system now connects all doors via Aperio H100 battery-powered handles, equipped with RFID capability for easy installation without additional cabling. "Now we see in real-time who will open the lock and when, and we can modify and grant access rights — remotely," explains Kari Mäkinen.
Integration with Existing Systems
Authorised users at the airport benefit from secure, programmable ID cards, offering greater convenience than traditional mechanical keys. "The access cards of both Finavia personnel and staff of other companies are easily programmed with necessary access rights," says Kari Mäkinen. "When employees change, their access is disabled. Or if the card gets lost, it can be completely removed from the system. With mechanical keys, that process is much harder."
Versatile and Unified Solutions
ASSA ABLOY's integration includes multiple solutions alongside the wireless Aperio and CLIQ door devices. Keyless, mobile-operated padlocks secure fences and cargo, while door handles feature an antimicrobial coating to reduce germ spread. The availability of these solutions from a single manufacturer enabled Finavia to develop a cohesive and integrated system. "Safety, functionality, durability, security of supply and usability were the reasons we chose the ASSA ABLOY solution," concludes Kari Mäkinen, Senior Access Control Specialist at Helsinki Airport.
