A supplier and distributor of truck and auto supplies, travel gear and mobile electronics plus a national brands portfolio and value-imports serves the ‘on-the-go’ lifestyle (professional drivers, mobile business people, leisure travellers), and retails their products via travel centres, convenience stores, heavy duty trucking, electronics and specialty retailers.

They also have supply chain and design/manufacturing/export divisions, proprietary snack foods groups and Canadian subsidiaries. They currently have three distribution centres with the addition of a new one in KY and need to adhere to the just-in-time form of inventory management shipping over 172,000 products in over 600 containers annually.

Virtual site assessment

Challenges - With a new warehouse that would be handling a large volume of inventory, the Director of Facilities wanted to ensure that they could protect their inventory with hi-resolution video footage of the inventory traffic in and out of the facility. He had a facility-opening deadline to meet so he needed a partner that could handle the project in KY, eliminating the significant expense of deploying an internal team. The Konica Minolta team was acquainted with the site manager and inquired about their plans for video security. During the construction of the first 100,000 square feet of the warehouse footprint, Luke Easley, Account Manager and Gay A. Kelly, Manager started the conversation with the distributor. With the ability to do a virtual site assessment, remote network configuring or to be onsite – the Konica Minolta team was able to provide options to meet the distributor’s requirements.

Providing expansive coverage

Solution - Video Security Solution Executive Stephen Crump joined the team to handle the site assessment and walk-through. Working though the distributor’s technical requirements, network access policies and integration challenges, the Konica Minolta VSS team provided a plan to cover the areas of high activity ensuring that there were no blind spots and a resource for installations.

While the distributor used a different product in their other location, with the System Surveyor analysis, Konica Minolta was able to demonstrate how the MOBOTIX cameras could provide expansive coverage and hi-resolution images. Should they want to include them, various AI-based detection applications were also proposed.

Our main concern was to ensure we had clear images of key areas within the facility where we could monitor the movement of the inventory. But, we also needed general video security for our onsite offices. With set requirements for security before moving in any inventory while meeting our opening date, we relied on the Konica Minolta team to help us get it all together,” said Director of Facilities.

Outcome - Konica Minolta deployed 30 MOBOTIX cameras with 180° views to cover the activity on the bay doors where product was loaded onto trucks, activity in the parking area, the caged areas where high-value inventory was locked, the office area and other general traffic/entry areas to the facility. Local integrators handled the cabling and mounting of the cameras.

High-value inventory

Additionally, Konica Minolta provided a new Video Management System (VMS) so the security team would have oversight for all of the cameras on premises. The final walkthrough has been scheduled.
