Recent research conducted by Verkada, in collaboration with The Harris Poll, reveals that 48% of individuals attending religious services feel increasingly uneasy about attending in-person due to escalating violence at worship venues.
The study, which surveyed 1,123 U.S. adults who participate in a religious service or event at least monthly, found that 39% of attendees are modifying how frequently they attend services in light of these safety concerns.
Concerns over safety in worship spaces
The findings from the survey point to a significant unease among faith communities regarding the safety of their places of worship, highlighting a pressing need for new strategies to ensure these spaces are secure and welcoming.
The apprehension is notably higher in larger congregations with 500 or more attendees, where 32% of participants express significant concern for their safety, compared to just 18% in smaller congregations.

The survey indicates that younger generations, particularly Gen Z (55%) and Millennials (61%), exhibit greater anxiety about attending in-person services compared to Gen X (40%) and Boomers (25%).

Efforts in security enhancements
While more than half of congregation members (54%) report that their place of worship has enhanced security over the past year, a significant portion—33%—still perceive security measures as minimal or lacking altogether.
In response to these issues, many religious institutions have been implementing Verkada's security solutions, with a 65% increase in adoption over the past year, as communities aim to provide reassurance and safety for their attendees.
Ben Jones, a retired police lieutenant and Verkada Public Safety Advisor, emphasizes the dual importance for faith leaders in securing their venues: "Places of worship are essential gathering places with three in 10 U.S. adults attending religious services regularly, according to a recent Gallup Poll," he stated.
Jones further notes that ensuring the physical safety of congregants is crucial not just for their protection, but also for maintaining the peace and sense of belonging that these spaces symbolize.
