Sony video surveillance solution enhances security at Lysia clubsino Lübeck in Germany

Sony mini dome and PTZ-network cameras were installed with Milestone XProtect Corporate video-management software Background Spielbank SH GmbH operates five casinos in Germany, welcoming more than 30,000 guests every year to locations throughout Schleswig-Holstein. The organisation’s newest venue is targeted at guests over the age of 35 who are looking for an entertainment venue as well as a gambling destination. With this in mind, the Lysia clubsino Lübeck opened on 8th December 2012 as both a club and casino rolled into one, with a bar and stage area for hosting in-house entertainment. Spielbank SH GmbH appointed BHS Böhm e.K. to handle the planning and execution of a video surveillance installation due to its specialism in high-end casino equipment and video surveillance technology. Challenges Lysia clubsino Lübeck required video surveillance solutions to monitor slot machines, gaming tables, cash desks, foyer areas and function rooms within the casino. The casino required a bespoke video security solution including; high frame rates (at least five images/s); guaranteed fail-safe functionality; and high-resolution imagery to combat relatively poor lighting conditions.  Installation logistics threatened to be a challenging factor, as the new casino was relocated from an original site in Travemünde. As a result, the installation would have to be carried out within a short time frame. Solution After assessing the specific requirements of the Lysia clubsino Lübeck site, BHS Böhm e.K. recommended a combination of 86 Sony mini dome and PTZ-network cameras, as well as Milestone XProtect Corporate video-management.  The SNC-DH140 and SNC-DH240 HD mini dome cameras deliver optimum performance even under poor lighting conditions due to their outstanding HD image quality and signal processing technology. Furthermore the cameras also feature automatic zoom and focus functions, as well as View-DR wide dynamic range technology and XDNR noise reduction features. The HD bullet camera SNC-CH280 is ideally suited for outdoor use due to its True Day/Night function, IR Illumination and DEPA Advanced analysis capability. The Sony Exmor CMOS sensor delivers high picture quality images to record incidents clearly and reliably. This installation incorporates 27 PTZ cameras, with Milestone XProtect Corporate capability to achieve accurate positioning. The SNC-EP521 model has swivel, tilt and zoom functions for surveillance tasks that cover large surface areas. The powerful 36x optical zoom and 12x digital zoom achieves a total zoom factor of 432x. SNC-DH140 and SNC-DH240 HD cameras deliver optimum performance under poor lighting conditions The HD rapid dome camera SNC-RH124 features high-speed swivel capabilities. The camera has a tilt range of 210° and a continuous 360° swivel range to record images quickly and to a high level of detail. HPoE capability (High Power over Ethernet) and support for various codecs enables optimum flexibility for the system design, integration and installation stages. The PTZ cameras are able to position automatically thanks to the new video system being integrated with several third party systems. For example, surveillance of slot machines is performed using specialist software from BHS Böhm e.K. called ISS Intelligent Slot Surveillance. Results The project commenced in October 2012 and was completed in time for the December opening date. The intelligent positioning of Sony PTZ cameras rendered it possible for video surveillance to be performed using approximately half the number of cameras that would normally be required. As a result of the installation, picture quality was greatly enhanced and BHS Böhm e.K. is already receiving enquiries from other casinos interested in upgrading to a Sony network solution. Why Sony was selected The Sony solution was cost effective and fulfilled the casino’s safety requirements. All of the components were readily available from BHS Böhm e.K. Through this partnership, additional units can be quickly sourced resulting in significantly reduced storage costs. Milestone Systems' world-leading open platform IP video management software is being used by Coastalwatch, an innovative analytics and media content company that services international surf life saving and coastal management needs by delivering live and recorded video and information on beaches and coastlines around the globe via its CoastalCOMS division.As a main component of the CoastalCOMS monitoring platform, the Queensland, Australia-based company is using Milestone XProtect software to provide live video surveillance and analytics solutions to marine safety and coastal management officials in several cities in Australia and the United States. CoastalCOMS' analytics software and multi-national network of hosted coastal cameras are also used for the collection of real-time data, such as wave height and wave period analysis, vessel monitoring and counting, people counting on beaches, as well as tracking changes in the shoreline and general beach state. With access to over a hundred Coastalwatch-owned cameras on the ground in Australia and many more private or municipally owned cameras in the U.S and abroad, CoastalCOMS uses Milestone XProtect software to centrally view and control cameras globally, layering in the ability to extract data for environmental monitoring, public education, tourism and recreational usage.Different combinations of the imagery and information are used by such customers as the City and County of Honolulu Hawaii's Ocean Safety Division, where CoastalCOMS assists surf lifesavers with hosted surveillance platforms capable of wave height analysis and people counting. The City of Galveston, Texas, also chose CoastalCOMS for surveillance of remote beaches because it increased the ability to measure the amount of shoreline change as a result of hurricanes."Milestone XProtect software allows us to create 'networks' of coastal cameras on the fly, patterning and sourcing video from both new and existing beach cameras according to each customer's needs.  We then process the video in real time for different groups based on their reporting needs and workflows," says Tim Chandler, President/CEO of CoastalCOMS. "Integrated into our solution using the Milestone SDK, XProtect makes it possible for us to provision access to the video and cameras so only the right people can view the video and information at the right times."Video streams from a CoastalCOMS camera network being used by Surf Life Saving Queensland are also available to the public on Coastalwatch.com, which provides live video images, wave height and swell information, daily surf reports and other news to the international surfing community. Coastalwatch was awarded the 2011 Pioneer Award for CoastalCOMS Wave Height Processing Technology When authorities need to take manual control of the cameras during a lifesaving incident, integration with CoastalCOMS XProtect solution allows the live images and HD video on the media site to be cut off and replaced with other media content so as not to broadcast the command and control activities of life savers and marine safety to the public.Coastalwatch uses mostly Sony cameras in their network and the networks they install for clients. Their current solutions include a blend of Sony RZ25s with SNTEX101s in place, a huge install base of Sony RZ50s, and a growing number of the newer HD lines including the SNCRH164 HD domes and the bullet style SNCCH180 HD cams.  Coastalwatch has been a Sony partner for years in Asia/Pacific/Australia working with Sony engineering out of Japan. "We can attest to how great the Sony optics and imaging are, as well as to the importance of their PTZ cameras' 'return-to-preset' accuracies and overall encoding abilities for what we do. We are now scheduling cameras and reading video for processing directly from the Milestone database via integration with our CoastalCOMS cloud platform. With the XProtect API, CoastalCOMS-enabled cameras can automatically reposition themselves based on alerts from external sensors or data feeds, such as a status change in an Emergency Management system, a Weather Service warning or alert, or a measured change that happens in front of the camera - we don't even have to press a button," Chandler explains. "This provides our customers with unprecedented abilities to gather information and images to better understand conditions and coordinate responses in changing beach environments around the world."Surf Life Saving Denmark last year installed a high definition CoastalCOMS camera at Hvide Sande Beach in West Denmark as a pilot project. The HD camera is in use to support life saving efforts by providing decision support at this busy German tourist destination. Video from the system is managed via CoastalCOMS' hosted Milestone cloud presence in the UK, and can be serviced jointly by both US and Australian offices. Since most of the infrastructure normally deployed on location is instead deployed in the cloud, the only resource they need in Denmark for this solution is a local resource for simple break fixes on the field hardware. The added abilities of CoastalCOMS' wave and environmental data processing for the lifeguards will be useful for both public safety and tourism.In January, Coastalwatch was awarded the 2011 Pioneer Award at the Australian Surfing Hall of Fame Awards for CoastalCOMS Wave Height Processing Technology. The Sony HD bullet cameras provided race coordinators with uninterrupted views, regardless of lighting conditions Background The New York City Marathon is a tradition held sacred not only by New Yorkers, but by people from around the globe who come to take part in the yearly event. Participants from more than 130 countries vie for a select number of spots to run the 26.2 mile course. Meanwhile, the whole city unites as spectators to cheer on those undertaking one of the most gruelling feats of physical stamina and endurance, which in 2014 took an average of 4 hours and 35 minutes to complete. The 2014 New York City Marathon — held November 2, 2014 — was completed by more than 50,000 runners who ran through all five boroughs ending in the scenic embrace of Central Park. Furthermore, over one million spectators crowded the length of the course for hours to cheer on runners on. The Challenge When large crowds gather in confined areas for many hours, the topic naturally turns to security. As a result of this spotlight on safety issues at large-scale and widespread events, like a marathon, a comprehensive plan is put in place to keep the race runners and spectators secure. This year, the New York Road Runners (NYRR), the running club who organises the annual race and their medical team chose New York City-based networked technology and systems integrator, Virsig, LLC to spearhead and execute their security plans, and to provide technological assistance and direction to increase safety. Sony Solution Sony was chosen by Virsig to be the IP camera of choice to securely monitor the world’s largest marathon, along with support from several other global technology partners including: Firetide, Inc.—a Division of UNICOM Global; Milestone Systems and Network Video Technologies. Sony’s cameras were required to perform multiple functions ranging from situational awareness at all entrances and exits, to threat assessment, and personnel management. In excess of 50 Sony security cameras were installed along the route, including SNC-HM662, SNC-XM632, SNC-WR632C, SNC-CH260 and SNC-CH280 ; which includes fixed cameras with on-board video analytics, dome, bullet, 360 degree and pan-tilt-zoom style cameras. Additionally, the marathon coordinators required a camera that would provide situational awareness to monitor the activities inside the emergency and medical tents. Because these were temporary structures, they were unable to take advantage of multiple camera views. For those areas, the SNC-HM662, a 5MP camera capable of providing 360 degree views from a single sensor, was selected. From this one camera, race organisers were able to know exactly what was going on in each tent, at all times. Results Sony’s IPELA ENGINE security cameras, which were also installed at the 2013 New York City Marathon, were coordinated through Milestone Systems XProtect Corporate, a powerful IP video management software (VMS) designed for large-scale and high-security deployments. Meanwhile, Sony’s new, ultra wide dynamic range IP surveillance cameras were placed throughout the last mile of the race in Central Park and around the finish line. The camera allowed images that were far more detailed and expansive than anything used in the past The innovative SNC-XM632 IPELA ENGINE camera was used in multiple locations for a broad overview of the areasaround the entrance and exit points at the race. The camera has a 113-degree wide angle field-of-view and a hi-res, full HD imager, allowing for images that were far more detailed and expansive than anything used in the past. Why Sony Was Selected Sony’s reputation as a reliable provider of security solutions made it a clear choice for Virsig. Having a system that necessitated quick and efficient set-up was essential to the proposed solution. Although the marathon takes place during the day, the setup occurs over the course of several preceding days, and Sony’s cameras needed to be able to perform reliably during day and night-time hours. The Sony high-definition bullet cameras that were used come equipped with infrared illuminators that provided race coordinators with uninterrupted views, regardless of lighting conditions. The weather leading up to the marathon was very challenging, including freezing cold temperatures and rain, so it was important for Virsig to use cameras that were durable, reliable and self-sufficient. Sony’s security cameras automatically adjust to meet requirements in lighting and environment, and hold up to the unpredictable demands of the weather. This ensure that race managers can deal with unforeseen circumstances and medical emergencies and rest assured that the cameras will perform their functions without the attention of a team. Quotes “We selected Sony for multiple reasons; first and foremost because of the quality of the picture, and secondly because of the ease of installation,” said Glenn Taylor, Executive Director, Virsig. “We have a very short window to get the equipment up and running and we don’t have a lot of direct access to the cameras during the actual marathon. This is particularly why we relied on the photo framing and auto focus that’s built into the electronics of the Sony camera.” “To help ensure the safety of the biggest marathon in the world is no small task. Sony is pleased that we were able to be an integral part of the security process for the second year in a row,” said Phil Coppola, Northeast Security Manager, Sony Electronics’ Security Systems Division. “Virsig worked day and night to get their system up and running and they had to contend with some terrible weather leading up to the race. With their experience in wireless transmission and video surveillance system design and installation, Virsig allowed the Sony cameras to operate to their fullest potential and play a pivotal role in helping to secure the marathon participants and spectators.”
