SALTO secures Kinlay Hostel in Galway, Ireland
SALTO's battery operated XS4 electronic smart locks were installed in the bedrooms

The multi award winning Kinlay Hostel in Galway, Ireland, has upgraded its security arrangements with a tailored electronic access control solution from SALTO.

After extensive renovations the newly refurbished Kinlay Hostel, which is located in the heart of the city centre, on the corner of Eyre Square, opened in January 2012 and almost immediately won the ‘Best Hostel in Ireland’ award and the ‘7th Best Hostel in the World’ award.

Its first rate amenities, modern decor, bright lighting and fun atmosphere all impressed the judges as did the owners passion for looking after their guests. This attention to detail extended to ensuring that guest security was paramount during their stay leading the owners to choose a class leading hospitality access solution from SALTO to provide 24/7 control of who can access what, where and when.

Speaking about the access control system, Kieran Gorey of Doorware Architectural Access Solutions Ltd, the Galway based SALTO Certificated Partner who carried out the installation, says "We are delighted to have won this prestigious contract using SALTO products which are both a cost effective and elegant solution.”

“Working in consultation with the hostel owners, a key element of their brief was to provide a total ‘one-stop-shop’ solution. This involved designing a clean, modern state-of-the-art access control solution for the comfort and convenience of the guests following refurbishment of the building.”

To achieve this Doorware Architectural Access Solutions Ltd installed over 55 battery operated stand alone XS4 electronic smart locks in a brushed stainless steel finish into all the bedrooms, as well as a DIN glass door lock on a frameless glass back office door, and a hard wired smart card wall reader and on-line control unit on a further back office double door.

The installation of the SALTO access platform needed no hard wiring, and provides a ‘wire-free’, networked, electronic access solution that takes full advantages of the SALTO VIRTUAL NETWORK (SVN).

"We are delighted to have won this prestigious contract using SALTO products which are both a cost effective and elegant solution"

This enables Kinlay Hostel’s wire-free locks to be networked to their PC server without wires, infrared, or Wi-Fi. The link that enables this communication is carried by the ‘intelligent’ smart card used by guests and staff which is a 2-way data transporter that grants access to bedrooms, back office doors etc.

User’s simply ‘flash’ their smart card and continue with their routine while allowing for full control of all user access from a central station. Auditing, access changes and even diagnostics of the locks are all communicated to the computer without any need to physically gather this information, giving the hostel total control of their building, enhancing both security and convenience for guests and staff alike in a totally controlled environment.

General Manager Frank O’Connell says; “We’re pleased with the finished installation and with the performance of our new SALTO access control system. It delivers everything we’ve asked of it and we also like the fact that it’s ‘sate-of-the-art’ and neatly compliments the contemporary styling of our hostel.”
