Spectra Logic, the deep storage experts, announced a major expansion of the Spectra BlackPearl Deep Storage Gateway family with two new products, including the entry-level BlackPearl V Series that lowers the financial barrier for a hybrid cloud solution, and the BlackPearl P Series, which more than triples the throughput and number of tape drives managed compared to the standard BlackPearl S Series. The BlackPearl family now accommodates smaller organisations, such as post-production houses, through large organisations requiring superior performance to handle complex, growing data sets, such as multi-site networks.

Meeting customer requirements

Spectra’s BlackPearl Deep Storage Gateway has been meeting the needs of customers in data-intensive environments experiencing exponential growth since its introduction in 2013. BlackPearl provides a direct interface from any workflow into an active archive, providing access to nearline storage, tape, and cloud, while reducing costs.

The BlackPearl V Series serves as the new entry-level option, with the ability to store 300 million objects and transfer data at up to 300 MBps sustained to disk or tape. With a small 2U form factor, the V Series combined with a Spectra T50e Tape Library could store up to 750TB in a 6U space (calculations using 6TB raw for LTO-7 and 2.5:1 compression).

“BlackPearl has been a cost-effective, easy-to-use solution for organisations moving massive amounts of data to tape, and more recently, to disk and public cloud”

For larger environments, the BlackPearl P Series meets the needs of customers with very large archives that have higher throughput requirements. Designed for superior performance, the P Series can store a billion or more objects, transfer up to 3000 MBps sustained to disk or tape, and manage 20 or more LTO-7 tape drives paving the way for future generations of LTO and TS tape drives.

Cost-effective and easy-to-use solution

“BlackPearl has been a cost-effective, easy-to-use solution for organisations moving massive amounts of data to tape, and more recently, to disk and public cloud,” said Matt Starr, CTO of Spectra Logic. “With the addition of the V Series and P Series versions, we are extending the benefits of BlackPearl to every organisation, where data is critical to operations. This lets our customers find the right match for their unique workflow and confidently store and scale their data for pennies per gigabyte.”

Expansion of BlackPearl family

The expansion of the BlackPearl family follows other recently announced enhancements to Spectra’s BlackPearl Deep Storage Gateway, including integration with the Cyberduck open source client software tool and direct disaster recovery copy replicated to Amazon public cloud, including Glacier. With the addition of the two new versions, BlackPearl continues to be the premier deep storage solution on the market.

The BlackPearl family is available now and includes three products:

  • BlackPearl V Series – 200 – 300 MBps to disk or tape sustained
  • BlackPearl S Series – 600 – 800 MBps to disk or tape sustained
  • BlackPearl P Series – 2000 – 3000 MBps to disk or tape sustained
