Illinois’ Thornton Township High School District 205 has bolstered its safety measures by integrating ZeroEyes’ AI-powered gun detection and situational awareness solution into its existing security infrastructure. This initiative aims to enhance the district's capabilities to counteract gun-related violence effectively.
The district comprises three high schools: Thornridge in Dolton, Thornton in Harvey, and Thornwood in South Holland, serving over 5,500 students and nearly 300 staff members. Alongside ZeroEyes' advanced technology, the schools utilise metal detectors, on-site security personnel, and extensive security camera systems to maintain a secure environment.
Layered Security Approach
Dr. Nathaniel Cunningham, Jr., Superintendent of District 205, emphasised the district’s commitment to safety, stating, “Keeping our students and staff safe is a responsibility we take seriously every day. Adding ZeroEyes strengthens our layered approach to campus safety by helping us quickly detect and verify a visibly brandished weapon and alert the right people so we can act fast.” This statement highlights the importance of swift detection and communication in managing potential threats.

ZeroEyes employs an AI-driven surveillance system that integrates with existing digital security cameras. Upon identifying a gun, the system instantly forwards images to the ZeroEyes Operations Center (ZOC), the only fully in-house, U.S.-based operation staffed round-the-clock by military and law enforcement experts.
Instant alerts and collaboration
Experts at the ZOC validate the detected threat and provide dispatch alerts and actionable intelligence. This includes visual details, gun type, and the last known location, which is essential for both law enforcement and school security teams to respond efficiently. Alerts are typically sent within seconds, enabling rapid response efforts.
Mike Lahiff, CEO of ZeroEyes, stated, “We’re proud to support District 205 in strengthening their already comprehensive approach to campus safety. Every second matters in an active threat situation, and our technology is designed to deliver rapid, actionable intelligence that helps schools and law enforcement respond faster and more effectively.” The collaboration between ZeroEyes and District 205 exemplifies a proactive approach to school safety, focusing on early detection and swift action.
