Auburn University, situated in Auburn, Alabama, and home to around 22,000 students and 7,000 faculty and staff members, is prioritising enhanced security measures by adopting an advanced key management system. The institution's goal is to ensure a secure environment for its entire academic community through efficient key management and access control.
With over 230 campus buildings, Auburn University faces the ongoing challenge of maintaining security across various facilities, including dormitories, libraries, and laboratories. Many campus structures, some over a century old, rely heavily on traditional locks and keys, making effective key management essential for safety and security.
Implementation of KeyWatcher
To address these security concerns, Auburn University has implemented the KeyWatcher wall-mounted key storage cabinet from Morse Watchmans. This intelligent key management solution replaces outdated lock boxes and unreliable manual logs. It allows only authorised users to access keys by requiring a proper authorisation code, and it records comprehensive access history detailing user, date, and time of key transactions.
The adoption of the KeyWatcher system was driven by its capability to address diverse security and access control challenges. Auburn University relies on seven KeyWatcher key banks to grant security, facility, and emergency personnel access to authorised keys as needed. The system also tracks key usage meticulously, alerting central authorities if a key is retained longer than authorised.
The new system significantly minimises key exposure risks, reducing lost key incidents and potential security breaches. Each key's movement is closely monitored, with details of checks and user information ensuring timely returns. In instances of extended key checkout, the appropriate personnel are notified to address the situation.
