A heightened environmental awareness and financial assistance by the government for renewable energy projects has led to the construction of numerous photovoltaic plants. Reliable protection of the usually vast areas against theft or sabotage is not only in the interest of the operators, but is demanded by insurance companies and investors. The requirements for video surveillance and analysis are clearly defined: the system is meant to reliably raise an alarm if an unauthorised person should attempt to access the area. At the same time false alarms triggered, for example, by weather effects or animals should be reduced to a minimum.

About CEL

Central Electronics Limited (CEL) is a Technology and Production Enterprise of the Department of Scientific & Industrial Research, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India. It was established in 1974 with an objective to commercially exploit the indigenous technologies developed by National Laboratories and R&D Institutions in the country. CEL works in the field of Solar Photovoltaic (SPV) and it has developed technology with its own R&D efforts. CEL has recently set up a new Solar Photo Voltaic line at its works at Sahibabad. The new area was to be put under CCTV surveillance on a 24x7 basis.

Mission

The CEL’s existing lab facilities are already equipped with video surveillance. The new facility, Solar Photo Voltaic line, was planned to be equipped with 24x7 video surveillance. Human and handling activities at the photovoltaic labs were critical to ensure the smooth and safe operations for handling delicate equipment in the lab.

Threat perceptions

Solar Photo Voltaic line generates Solar cells, which are largely deployed for eco-friendly power generation by solar power stations across the country. The other uses include running electrical appliances. The voltaic cells generation involves a delicate and precision process which involves valuable and costly chips. The strict adherence to the process and disciplined approach is the key to quality product. Besides this, unwanted human intervention can spoil the process and quality of the final product.

Challenges and solution

CP PLUS carried out in-depth analysis and investigation of the existing problems and a large variety of security threats of lab facilities. To effectively maintain the security and ensure adherence to defined process to mitigate precious chip wastage in the laboratories, guarantee the smooth proceeding of research and create a secure environment for the scientists and staff, CP PLUS designed an all-round solution, Campus IP intelligent video surveillance solution.

The specification of each item, cameras, Switches, racks, cables were explicitly analysed and defined. It clearly demanded the latest and state-of-the art products, which were the newest. The understanding of the process criticality was mandatory part.

Also, the system was meant to reliably raise an alarm if an unauthorised person should attempt to access the area. At the same time false alarms triggered, for example, by weather effects or animals should be reduced to a minimum. The camera should have built in SD/Micro SD card slots supporting up to 64 GB so that when the camera is not able to connect to NVR it can keep on recording on this Card and later transfer it to the NVR. All cameras and NVR are accessible on mobile app iCMOB, gCMOB, and wCMOB. The CMS software to access them are KVMS pro/vOptimus Pro.

Efficient and reliable customised surveillance concept

Yogesh Dutta, COO, CP PLUS, explains, "The operators of the photovoltaic plant familiarised themselves thoroughly about CCTV systems in solar plants. Usually, cameras with infra-red lighting are used in order to get usable image material at night. However, the high energy requirements of that concept and the rapid wear and tear of individual components pose a problem. Therefore, we, at CP PLUS developed a new, more efficient and more reliable customised surveillance concept.”

This weather-proof HD dome camera serves the purpose of indoor monitoring and has a protective housing to ensure overall functionality of the camera. The camera can see clearly objects within the distance of 20m during night. The camera system provisions adequate IR illumination. The IR illumination is automatic and it switches itself ON/OFF depending upon light conditions.

Pan, tilt, zoom (PTZ) cameras are excellent for viewing large areas. They can be placed in auto-patrol modes where they automatically step through predetermined positions. If motion is detected, the optional IP NVR software can be set to record the video until motion is stopped. The other features offered by these cameras are 20X optical zoom and clear visibility in 100 Meter range in dark conditions. With in-built DWDR, objects can be seen clearly with a bright light background.

The NVR is good for motion detection and can split the screen to view feeds from 1/4/9/16/32 cameras on a single display. These NVRs can view the real time video of the cameras connected with simultaneous recording of the same.
