The access control industry tends to be more conservative when it comes to the adoption of new technology and services for end users, but that doesn't mean that 2019 won't provide a significant amount of progress through emerging trends taking shape in the industry. In addition to the increased adoption and acceptance of the cloud, mobile credentials and biometrics are becoming more mainstream, and integrations between manufacturers will take centre stage. Here, we take a look at these and other trends helping to shape the coming year. Cloud-based products We're continuing to see a demand by end-user customers for customised responses to certain actions within an access control system For many access control manufacturers, the core of the business is in more traditional products, with a high percentage of installs continuing to be these kinds of projects. However, over the last couple of years, cloud-based products have emerged as a viable option for customers. We've seen more of a willingness for end-user customers to inquire whether this is an option for them, citing ease of use, remote management, cybersecurity and more as part of their foray into this branch of access control. The cloud has established its reputation as being quicker to install, more flexible for customers to access and manage both their access points as well as the video associated with these doors, and placing less pressure on internal (or in some cases, non-existent) IT teams to help set up and manage an access control system. Mobile credentials applications We're continuing to see a demand by end-user customers for customised responses to certain actions within an access control system. For example, if there's an alarm set off during the day along a perimeter, the ability to automatically execute a lockdown and simultaneous email or message to everyone within the building alerting them to the issue is critical. The desire for this kind of flexibility within a system is prompting manufacturers to build new simple to use graphical tools into their systems that allow customised action responses that are proportional to the level of alarm. There's a strong desire by many of today's companies to be able to use mobile phones for access control and as such, manufacturers are either developing their own mobile credentials applications or integrating their systems with these kinds of products. Over the last couple of years, cloud-based products have emerged as a viable option for customers Future of biometrics As companies start to ask about whether their facilities are safe enough, they're often more willing to consider access control that takes security to a new level, such as the implementation of biometric readers. Biometrics is getting more usage in professional security applications and many customers want to move away from using physical cards for access control. Manufacturers that don't currently have biometric hardware in place are starting to integrate with readers designed to offer this functionality in an effort to meet the demands of customers. The dramatic rise in facial recognition biometrics is something that will likely shape the future of biometrics as costs start to decrease. While the access control industry is highly fragmented, we're seeing a trend toward increased partnerships and open-platform technology that helps end users achieve the kind of comprehensive security that they desire. Video management platforms We're seeing a trend toward increased partnerships and open-platform technology that helps end users achieve the kind of comprehensive security that they desire For example, there are a number of access control providers that are providing paths toward full integration with lock manufacturers and vice versa in an effort to meet the needs of clients who may have purchased locks but a high powered access control system to properly manage them. There's also a large shift toward full integration with video management platforms and access control systems to fully integrate the two into a single, user-friendly experience and give end users more control over both. Additionally, manufacturers are looking to provide customers with a single system that meets the needs they have with regards to video, intrusion and access control. Right now, I don't think there's a system that can fully deliver on the promise of being exceptional at all three, so integrations and partnerships remain important to achieve that end goal. Access control world An increasing number of end users are realising the holes in the current Wiegand protocols that have been in place since the 1980s, along with the large number of ‘off the shelf’ equipment that's now available to allow outsiders access through readers that operate under these protocols. As a result, in the last decade or so, OSDP has come onto the scene and is growing in popularity. One of the most important steps for access control manufacturers in 2019 will be to listen to customers who are concerned with this vulnerability and work toward fully supporting OSDP in an effort to protect these access control systems. It's an exciting time to be a part of the access control world, as we finally see results from all of the hype centred around the cloud, biometrics, mobile credentials, hacking protection and strong partnerships come to fruition. As 2019 begins, look for these trends to grow in popularity and for manufacturers to really listen to the end-user customer they serve and respond in kind.

Launched only last year, the Aperio H100 is a stylish, slim door handle that can be retrofitted to almost any interior door. Requiring no drilling or wiring to install, the Aperio H100 has been designed to complement most modern commercial office environments, and works with common European and Scandinavian mortise locks, in wooden, steel, tubular frame or glass doors with standard lock cases. The new updates to the access control software were previewed at the IFSEC tradeshow in London in June and received a wave of positive feedback from visitors. These new features include integration with Vanderbilt’s award-winning SPC intrusion system, a rules mapping engine, and a smartphone app. Outlining the versatility of the new ACT Enterprise feature set, Ross Wilks, Vanderbilt’s Head of Marketing Communications, starts off: “Our Apple and Android compatible apps mean real-time monitoring, user management and administration from your smartphone. The ACT Enterprise rules mapping engine ensures intuitive, easy-to-use I/O management for trigger detection with compatible devices. These devices are usually attached to a door or an automated electrical that closes the circuit on the I/O unit. When this circuit is closed, an alarm is sent over the network and that is captured by ACT Enterprise. Vanderbilt, a provider of state-of-the-art security systems, announces the release of its new VR mullion card reader. Designed for today’s bright, clean interiors, Vanderbilt’s VR mullion card readers are easy to install, use and maintain. The reader, with keypad, maximises the user interaction with arming, access and messaging that results in enhanced user interaction ‘at the door’. "One of the really nice design features we have implemented with these new readers," starts Ross Wilks, Head of Marketing Communications at the company, "is that when the light bar is in rest mode, it can be configured to appear in a colour that suits the building’s interior design, or even the company’s corporate colours. There is also automatic mood lighting to ensure the readers are not too bright when it is dark. Subtle design features like that are why we feel the Vanderbilt VR mullion card readers are the slickest on the market," finishes Wilks. One of the key features in this new release from Vanderbilt, is the inclusion of the highly secure OSDP Highly secure OSDP All models of the readers have three indicator LEDs and a multi-tone buzzer for audio verification. A multi-colour light frame enforces access status information. This can be configured to follow the indicator LEDs or any number of different options. Display brilliance is set automatically by a built-in light sensor. Aesthetics aside, one of the key features in this new release from Vanderbilt, is the inclusion of the highly secure OSDP (Open Supervised Device Protocol) in the readers to help combat people hacking communications. High-security option "90 percent of all access control cards in the industry today are easily copied and cloned," states Andrew Fulton, Head of Access Control Product Line at Vanderbilt. "Copied credentials, fake credentials, and card cloners can easily be ordered on the internet. This has created the growing realisation that most access control ID systems are therefore totally open to being compromised and seriously vulnerable to attack," he explains. "Our solution to these latest hacking vulnerabilities offers a true high-security option that not only secures the cards and readers but also uses the latest OSDP to ensure that sniffing devices cannot be installed behind the reader or along the communications path," Fulton concludes. "Our mullion readers were designed to perform in even the harshest environments. They have been successfully tested to withstand extreme weather conditions, varying from -40c to +70c. The readers are manufactured with a high-quality zinc casted metal frame for extra durability and quality, and have been tested to withstand 5 joules, a feat you just won’t get with plastic readers," summarises Wilks.

The Ministry of Finance, Nigeria oversees various financial and economic affairs of the federal government of Nigeria including managing, controlling, and monitoring all federal revenues and expenditures. To provide high-end security to this prestigious site, CEM’s AC2000 access control was selected and installed by CEM Approved Resellers Acti-Tech Ltd. Introduction AC2000 offers the Ministry of Finance a fully integrated and comprehensive access control, alarms processing, and photo ID badging system. The system comes with a suite of applications including AC2000 VIPPS (Visual Imaging and Pass Production System) which the Ministry of Finance found particularly beneficial. AC2000 VIPPS allows the Ministry of Finance to design their own ID badges and issue over 1500 permanent and temporary ID cards to staff and visitors. Solution CEM IP card readers A range of advanced CEM IP card readers were installed throughout the building, including the CEM S610f fingerprint card reader. The S610f fingerprint reader offers increased security by providing three levels of identity checks – ID card authentication, PIN check and fingerprint verification. The reader allows the Ministry of Finance the opportunity to add an additional layer of biometric security where necessary. Featuring a controller, card reader and fingerprint solution in one device, the S610f is a fully integrated biometric and access control reader that is used as part of the AC2000 system. Fingerprint templates are captured on the AC2000 enrolment station at the same time as a cardholder’s personnel details and images are captured and are then saved to the AC2000 server. Cards can then be issued and biometric templates distributed via the access control network, eliminating the need for an additional biometric network and software enrolment process. The S610f offers advanced features such as an LCD to display user messages such as ‘Access Granted’, ‘Card Expiring’, and ‘Wrong TimeZone’. S610f also uniquely features an internal database enabling intelligent decision making at doors at all times; even when communication has been temporarily lost with the host system. CEM Power over Ethernet solution “Utilising CEM’s advanced range of hardware, the Ministry of Finance also chose CEM’s Power over Ethernet Plus solution, the first of its kind in the industry” said Andrew Fulton, Business Development Director, CEM Systems. The CEM DIU 230 (Power over Ethernet Plus Door Interface Unit) eliminates the need for both a main connection and a local power supply to the door. Utilising Ethernet infrastructure throughout the Ministry of Finance, the DIU 230 supplies sufficient power via the same Cat 5e/6 cable that powers CEM card readers, as well as reliably powers double magnetic locks that secure the doors. “CEM Systems offered great support throughout the project and provided an excellent solution to secure the Ministry of Finance. Introduction Whether you’re a frequent international traveller or only use your passport occasionally, chances are, you’ve travelled through London’s Heathrow Airport. This can be said with good reason: LHR has the highest number of international passengers in the world. In 2013 alone, 66.5 million international passengers travelled through Heathrow Airport. With 190,000 daily passengers and more than 76,000 employees, the airport is considered a small city within a city. Processing over 250,000 people per day means the airport must look for new ways in which to maintain operational efficiency while still meeting stringent, and ever-changing security considerations, all while keeping its employees and passengers safe. The challenge As one of the biggest airports in the world, Heathrow Airport employs more than 76,000 people, all of who need to pass through various levels of security to get to and perform their jobs. Even before employees come into contact with the airport’s many visitors, they need to pass through behind-the-scenes restricted areas that are manned by security staff, in order to access cargo areas, runways, sales areas and other places within the airport. The airport must protect its employees and passengers, all while moving thousands of people through its doorways and in and out of its planes. The airport has been working with Tyco Security Products for the last 20 years, using solutions from CEM System to secure the airport’s five terminals with a combination of its AC2000 product line and software modules. AC2000 Airport, an aviation specific management system, is used to protect staff, aviation equipment such as air bridges and luggage carousels, and millions of passengers each year. Recently, Heathrow Airport wanted to increase its security specifically in its ID centre, as well as around Heathrow’s Campus, where cargo, staff and crew are processed before gaining access to the airport proper — an area where the highest level of security is required. The solution To enhance the security screening process of employees, Heathrow recently implemented CEM System’s emerald touch multi-functional screen terminals in the airport’s ID centre and on Heathrow’s Campus. emerald, which is a touch screen reader and a controller combined, provides security staff with a clear, visual, colour image indicating a card’s status, i.e. access denied or access granted. In addition, it provides real-time information on scheduled visitors, systems alarms and even information more directly related to time and attendance functions, such as first and last swipes for a card. With employment changes being made on a daily basis, AC2000 keeps track of details for each person, so those whose privileges have or soon will expire are easily identified. Time-savings are enhanced through the ability for users to change a PIN without having to contact the system operator. “As an intelligent device, emerald goes beyond securing premises; it empowers users, improves overall business needs and increases operational efficiency” said Andrew Fulton, Senior Director of Global Sales, CEM Systems. He continued “emerald is truly revolutionising the security industry, providing a whole new access control experience.” CEM emerald touch multi-functional screen terminals At Heathrow Airport, there are more than 4,000 readers from CEM Systems installed. In addition, the airport relies upon portable, hand-held card readers from CEM Systems for use at remote sites or for airport roaming security. Featuring a touch screen reader, controller and intercom system in one, the emerald multi-functional touch screen terminal allows data normally only available on the access control client PC to be accessed locally and securely at the door. Real time security information and statistics such as card status, scheduled visitors, top system alarms and most recent alarms on the terminal can be accessed using emerald. The availability of this data can be restricted using cardholder privileges. emerald also has the ability to display rotating advertisements or information announcements. This feature can be used to display Health & Safety notices or company updates, as well as advertisements that businesses can use to assist in revenue generation. Entry Checklist Mode enables emerald to display a sequence of images and questions relating to business requirements such as Security or Health & Safety, which users must answer positively before the door will open. If the employee answers No to any of the mandatory questions the door will not open. This enables the business to enforce their Health & Safety Policy at the edge of their access control system. Beyond being a security device, emerald can be used to disseminate information. For example, instead of issuing memos and having meetings, the new terminals can display company updates and even advertisements, the latter of which can help offset some of the cost. Now with the multi-functional touch screen terminal installed throughout Heathrow Airport, the airport has greatly improved the security screening of its employees and enhanced the security capabilities and processes building-wide.
