Colonial Heights School District in Virginia has integrated advanced AI technology to bolster its security measures by installing ZeroEyes' gun detection software.
This decision aims to proactively address potential gun-related threats, similar to those that other educational institutions nationwide have faced. ZeroEyes, renowned for developing the first AI-based gun detection platform accredited by the US Department of Homeland Security SAFETY Act Designation, provides this technology.
Situated near Richmond, the Colonial Heights School District encompasses five schools and a technical centre, accommodating approximately 3,000 students and 600 staff members within an eight square mile area.
The district emphasises collaborative safety measures, maintaining robust connections with local authorities and fostering strong relationships between schools and community members.
AI gun detection technology
ZeroEyes overlays AI gun detection onto existing security cameras
The ZeroEyes platform operates by layering its AI gun detection capabilities onto the district's existing digital security camera infrastructure. Upon the identification of a firearm, images are immediately sent to the ZeroEyes Operations Center (ZOC).
This US-based centre is staffed around the clock by trained veterans from the military and law enforcement sectors. These experts verify threats and provide detailed alerts to local police and school officials, containing crucial information such as the gun’s type and its last detected location.
Integrating safety strategies
Chairman of the Colonial Heights Public Schools Board, Steven Neece, highlighted the initiative's importance by stating, "One of the things that makes Colonial Heights special is how deeply connected our schools are to the community. We work hand in hand with our local police department every day, and programs like DARE at our elementary schools help build trust from an early age. ZeroEyes adds an extra layer of security without putting up barriers, and it fits into our safety strategy in a way that strengthens both protection and connection."
Enhanced security measures
The district has already implemented significant security initiatives, which include having a School Resource Officer or School Security Officer stationed in each building, utilising a thorough visitor check-in system, and employing extensive internal and external surveillance. The introduction of ZeroEyes’ software marks a progressive step in fortifying its multi-faceted safety measures.
