  • RGO College upgrades to Alcatel-Lucent network for secure student and staff connectivity.
  • Advanced Network Access Control enhances security by segregating users and devices with specific roles.
  • Cloud-managed network reduces TCO and maintenance, boosting educational experience at RGO College.

RGO College in Middelharnis has upgraded its network infrastructure to an Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise solution, enhancing secure connectivity for students and staff.

This comprehensive secondary school, located on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee, offers a range of educational levels including gymnasium, atheneum, HAVO and MAVO1, and caters to approximately 1,000 students.

Addressing connectivity challenges

The college had been facing connectivity challenges, impacting both students and staff, due to an outdated LAN/WLAN network. To overcome this, RGO College has implemented Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch® 6360 switches along with over 100 Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess® Stellar AP1321 and AP1351 Access Points (APs).

This deployment is supported by the Alcatel-Lucent OmniVista® Cirrus cloud-based network management system and Network Access Control (NAC) for enhanced security.

Network access control implementation

Aligning with the Netherlands' Information Security & Privacy (IBP) standards, the network employs NAC to ensure a fully secure environment. This involves configuring network segmentation so devices, students, and staff are separated and assigned distinct profiles with specific roles and permissions.

Classrooms' digital whiteboards utilise Private Pre-Shared Keys (PPSK) for secure network connections.

Successful integration and security

"We don’t have to do any more network maintenance because we haven’t encountered any problems since the network was upgraded. That saves us a lot of time," remarked Demi Jansen, System Administrator at RGO College.

Meanwhile, Esli Coenraad, Data Presales Engineer at Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise, highlighted the project's alignment with IBP standards, underlining its significance for the security of students and staff within the Dutch education sector.

Enhanced educational experience

With the newly secure, stable cloud-managed network, RGO College benefits from reduced Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and minimal maintenance requirements, positioning the institution to provide a robust and forward-thinking educational experience.
