DeterTech and Torchlight Technologies have confirmed a five-year strategic collaboration focusing on AmTag, an innovative chemical tagging solution aimed at curbing the illicit arms trade and controlling the diversion of state-held ammunition.
This agreement follows the success of a pilot programme involving Torchlight Technologies, Conflict Armament Research (CAR), the UK Foreign Office (FCDO), and Somalia’s Office of National Security (ONS), leading to Somalia setting a global precedent by fully tracing part of its national ammunition stockpile.
Impact on weapons and ammunition management
The pilot project in Somalia represented a significant leap in Weapons and Ammunition Management (WAM), showing that forensic science can effectively address arms distribution and corruption. These issues have long been challenging to tackle. '
"This extended partnership represents a pivotal, ongoing mission to make ammunition traceability a global norm," stated Marcus Wilson, CEO of Torchlight Technologies.
"The success of the Somalia pilot was just the beginning, and we are thrilled to continue working with DeterTech to scale that success. Together, we aim to work with governments, industry, law enforcement, and responsible end-users to prevent diversion, deter illegal activity, and support investigations."
AmTag: Innovating forensic technology
This technology, based on SmartWater, has a history of thirty years in combatting acquisitive crime
AmTag, developed by DeterTech, Torchlight Technologies, and Conflict Armament Research, incorporates rare earth elements and fluorescent compounds to form a distinctive forensic “code” visible under UV light.
This technology, based on SmartWater, has a history of thirty years in combatting acquisitive crime, maintaining a perfect conviction rate in court challenges.
"AmTag is redefining ammunition governance, and we’re thrilled to extend our partnership with Torchlight Technologies. We’re proud to support governments and global partners committed to reducing illicit arms proliferation through robust, evidence-based solutions," said Rebecca Millership, Forensic & Product Category Manager at DeterTech.
Future of ammunition traceability
Moving forward, DeterTech and Torchlight Technologies plan to continue advocating for ammunition traceability, broadening their deployments and refining the technology to support governments in the implementation of superior WAM practices. These initiatives aim to ensure ammunition supplies that are responsible, accountable, and traceable globally.
