In one session, Tony Thompson, Fellow, Institute of Civil Protection and Emergency Management helped attendees address how they should monitor and respond to events in real-time, use integrated technology solutions to drive greater efficiencies and cost savings, and finally deliver a unified security platform. Global Cyber Summit The inaugural Global Cyber Summit also welcomed major names in the field of cyber security. Tracy Buckingham, Deputy Director of Security & Cyber Exports at UKTI DSE spoke about the UK’s role in cyber and security capabilities, on the global stage and how collaboration between government, industry and academia, a trio she described as ‘the cornerstone of the UK’s approach to cyber security’, is vital to the strength of the UK’s cyber security industry. Elsewhere, Professor Ciaran Martin CB, Oxford University, and Former Chief Executive Officer (CEO), National Cyber Security Centre, delivered a session on the current cyber threats and priorities. Underpinning Martin’s speech was the belief that people have unconsciously polluted the cyber environment, resulting in the need for a rethink, to make it a safer place to inhabit. During his session, he explored five key areas that required change, namely, people, money, rules, technology, and skills. The Security Industry Association (SIA) has named Bonnie Michelman as the 2021 recipient of the SIA Insightful Practitioner Award, an honour recognising excellence in promoting the implementation of innovative security solutions. Bonnie Michelman is the Executive Director of Police, Security and Outside Services at Massachusetts General Hospital (Mass General) and for Mass General Brigham Corporation. SIA will present her with the award on Wednesday, Nov. 17, during the 2021 SIA Honors cocktail reception. Corporate security leadership veteran She has 30+ years of corporate security leadership experience, and along with her roles with Mass General and Mass General Brigham Corporation, she also serves as President of the Board of International Association for Healthcare Security & Safety (IAHSS) Foundation. Bonnie Michelman has previously served as President of the International Security Management Association, ASIS International and IAHSS. She is on the Regional Board of Directors for the Anti-Defamation League and also serves on the Advisory Council for Hostage US. Under Michelman’s direction, Mass General won the Lindberg Bell Award for the nation’s finest health care security programme, in 1999, 2007 and 2018. Advocate for increasing diversity in the security industry She has also been an advocate for increasing diversity within the security industry She was appointed in 2010, by Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano to the Homeland Security Advisory Council, holding that position until 2015, and chaired the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s faith-based Security Advisory Committee. Bonnie Michelman holds an MBA from Bentley College, an M.S. in Criminal Justice from Northeastern University and a B.A. in Government and Sociology from Clark University, as well as the Certified Protection Professional and Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator certifications. Everyone in security understands the significance of events, such as trade shows, road shows, seminars, galas and meet-and-greets. Whether virtual or in-person, these gatherings are important for a number of reasons. Role of security events For start-ups and high-profile manufacturers alike, security events have been the place to display new products, interact with key customers and strengthen existing partnerships. They serve as a forecast for evolution, showcasing the latest advancements in security technologies and organising educational seminars, dedicated to these topics. From a workforce standpoint, security events have also acted as a microcosm of the security industry From a workforce standpoint, security events have also acted as a microcosm of the security industry. While traditionally there has been a lack of representation of women and minorities at these events, there have been many changes. Now, there are initiatives in place to strategically cultivate more diversity, which bodes well for the industry’s future moving forward. The role of representation When I first entered the industry as an account executive in the mid-1990s, it was clear to me that it was primarily men who were the decision makers and stakeholders. It was men who spoke at these conferences, discussing key trends in the marketplace. Early on, I realised that if a woman wanted to succeed in a career in this industry, she would have to go to great lengths to prove her value, to earn the respect of her colleagues. And that was just to get a seat at the table. Twenty-five years ago, a woman in a C-suite or leadership position was an even rarer sight. More women representation in senior executive roles However, I have seen the security industry come a long way. In the decades since I entered it, my cause has been advocating for change and I can proudly say that we’ve made a lot of progress. More women are in management and senior executive roles at security companies today than ever before. When I walk into the room for a meeting, I’m not the only woman. There are a handful of us now. More women are speaking on panels and giving keynote sessions at security seminars and conferences. Moreover, there has been a tangible shift in the industry to champion women and diversity in the workforce. This is clearly seen by the creation of groups to advocate for these causes. In March of 2018, the Security Industry Association (SIA) launched its Women in Security Forum, in order to support the participation and growth of women in the industry. SIA Women in Security Forum As a group that offers programmes, professional development opportunities and networking events for women, the SIA Women in Security Forum has done a lot of work to encourage and support women, which is one of the reasons I chose to join. Through the group’s initiatives, such as the SIA Progress Award, female-led ISC West panels and the SECURE Perspectives column, women are gaining a platform for discussion and influence. Groups like these set a new standard of inclusivity. The importance of visibility In recent years, there have been a number of exciting milestones and achievements for women across all industries I have always believed in the power of role models. When you see someone who looks like you, can do something you didn’t believe you could do yourself, your thinking inevitably changes. That’s why representation is so crucial, as if women don’t see other women in positions of prominence, it can be harder to pursue audacious goals. In recent years, there have been a number of exciting milestones and achievements for women across all industries, from entertainment to government. In 2017, Warner Brother’s Wonder Woman, both headlined and directed by a woman, became one of the highest growing superhero origin films of all time, earning about US$ 822 million worldwide. In the 2018 U.S. mid-term election, more women were elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate than ever before, according to CNBC. In 2020, the people of the U.S. elected their first female Vice President. All of this serves to change the narrative about women and reinforce that our ideas, initiative and expertise play an instrumental role in the positive growth of this country. Representation, a powerful psychological tool In summary, when it comes to the security industry and key events, it’s important for organisers to proactively plan who’s being featured, who’s leading education sessions, who’s handing out awards and more. Representation is a powerful psychological tool that can either empower and embolden, or marginalise and discourage. Embracing and celebrating diversity will only better the security industry, and lead to greater success.
In the 1977 book, The Age of Uncertainty, author John Kenneth Galbraith wrote, “All of the great leaders have had one characteristic in common: it was the willingness to confront unequivocally the major anxiety of their people in their time. This, and not much else, is the essence of leadership.” Fast-forward four decades, and we are facing uncertainty like no other - anxiety levels are high, and fake news has become part of our daily lexicon. With this in mind, what can security and technology leaders do to alleviate fears, safeguard and reassure the public? The COVID-19 pandemic is the single biggest accelerator of digital transformation I have ever seen. We have had to survive in a world where digital was our only option. Digital solutions have connected us to each other, enabled us to work, and kept our streets and families safeDigital solutions have connected us to each other, enabled us to work, kept our streets and families safe, and even helped scientists to develop a COVID-19 vaccine in an unprecedented timeframe. Now, as we look towards the new next, we are entering a fresh era for disruptive thinking and innovative business models. Yet, our first and foremost thought among this must focus on responsible technology. Trust at an all-time low Make no mistake, the public are deeply disenchanted and trust is at an all-time low. In 2020, the Edelman Trust Barometer recorded a significant drop in the public’s trust in the tech sector. Three in five British people believe that technological change is happening too fast. CEO Richard Edelman notes that “Trust in tech has declined substantially. A lot of this has to do with suspicion not just about size, but about data and privacy.” The responsible use of technology The responsible use of technology will rebuild trust in technology at a time when our lives are intrinsically linked with itThe responsible use of technology (RUOT) will rebuild trust in technology at a time when our lives are intrinsically linked with it. Prioritising the RUOT gives organisations an opportunity to earn the trust of customers and employees. It goes beyond compliance or public relations. It also directly impacts the bottom-line. Employees at high-trust companies report that they have more energy at work, are 50% more productive, and are more engaged. Trust is the second most important purchasing factor for brands. The Copenhagen Letter As leaders, we have a responsibility towards our customers and the public to ensure all software and technology is used in an ethical and responsible way. Based on this, Milestone has also included a “Copenhagen Clause” in its end-user licensing agreements. The Copenhagen Letter provides a guide to direct how Milestone develops its products, who it sells to and partners with, and what its technology, ultimately, is used for. Having such frameworks in place is increasingly vital, as digital has become so ubiquitous in our lives, and the coming years, Milestone will further advocate, orchestrate and introduce mechanisms to ensure that our technology and software is being used responsibly. We’ve become used to using video conferencing to hold meetings, ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) to track vehicle usage in our cities and spot breaches of Coronavirus measures, and occupancy counters to aid social distancing. The growth of video surveillance and analytics, in particular, is highlighting concerns around the use, privacy, and security of video data. A boardroom priority As those concerns increase, expect to see RUOT and digital ethics become more of a boardroom priority. We’ll even see it in future KPIs across all departments. Technology creates value in every business domain — part of that value comes from the ethical use of technology. Until today, most conversations around digital ethics and RUOT has focused on compliance and risk. But innovation governance will become a license to operate, it won’t be just another risk metric. Innovating with transparency and trust will become a competitive differentiator. The first steps towards responsible use of technology With this in mind, what can technology leaders do now to ensure the RUOT? Committing to a wider movement like the Copenhagen Letter is a good first step. But we need to do more.Educating employees on industry-leading practices and commitments, will help to create a culture of RUOT Leaders must look for opportunities to turn awareness around the need for responsible technology, into action across all business domains. They can spearhead the cultural change needed for digital ethics to be seen as a source of business value. They can become influencers in their field, to lead the way for end-users and partners. Ethics must become core to all business strategies. E.g. instituting an ethics board will help to guide technology use and evaluate proposed innovations and new use cases. As well as RUOT being a board-level responsibility, it is also integral to every employee’s role. Educating employees on industry-leading practices and commitments, will help to create a culture of RUOT throughout an organisation. Collaboration needed Greater collaboration is also needed across the wider industry, with Government, and society as a whole. Unless all citizens are equipped with the means to reflect and feedback on the use of digital (and their data), the power will swing too close towards an autocracy. The uses of technology will be dictated by a few multi-nationals, who stand to reap the most benefits as a result. Global imbalances will widen further. Technology that’s equal My message to all leaders today is this: as you look toward the next decade and your digital transformation gathers pace, make sure every decision has the RUOT front of mind. And don’t go through it alone. Businesses, Government, and others, must work together for technology to be used ethically and equally across society, to benefit everyone.

Trade shows have always been a basic element of how the security industry does business - until the year 2020, that is. This year has seen the total collapse of the trade show model as a means of bringing buyers and sellers face to face. The COVID-19 pandemic has effectively made the idea of a large trade show out of the question. Today, even air travel seems incredibly risky, or at minimum a huge hassle. The good news is that the industry has adapted well without the shows. A series of “on-line shows” has emerged, driven by the business world’s increasing dependence on Zoom and other video conferencing platforms. The fact is, 2020 has provided plenty of opportunities for sellers to connect with buyers. It’s easy to dismiss these sessions as “Death by PowerPoint,” but some of them are incredibly informative. And conveniently accessible from the comfort of a home office. Internet transforming businesses We have already seen how the online world makes it easier than ever to connect with customers. In the consumer space, businesses like Uber, Shopify and Airbnb have proven that the Internet can transform how business is done. But in the security industry, we hear: “You can’t replace the value of meeting face to face.” That’s definitely true to some degree. A lesson of 2020 is the need to take a hard look at the economic model of trade shows However, the reality of 2020 suggests that there are alternatives that are almost - emphasis on almost - as good. And that don’t cost as much. And that don’t take away as much time from the office. And that don’t involve the effort of schlepping luggage through an airport yet again to a hotel in a beautiful city you will never see where you will spend three days in a big exhibit hall eating overpriced hot dogs and regretting your choice of footwear. Economic model of trade shows Sure, you’ll meet up with old pals, and get some value out of the experience. But how much value versus the cost? A lesson of 2020 is the need to take a hard look at the economic model of trade shows - how much they cost versus the value they provide. Considering how well we have gotten along without them, one wonders how and why trade shows have become such an integral part of our industry, and of hundreds of other industries, for that matter. I have had many conversations with exhibitors at trade shows in the last several decades. I have heard probably thousands of complaints about the slowness of the foot traffic, the high costs of exhibiting, the price and hassles of travel. The question I have often wondered (and asked): Is it worth it? Defray the costs Usually, the complaining exhibitor will reluctantly admit that it is, and/or provide some other justification, such as one of the following: All my competitors are here. If I don’t exhibit, it sends the wrong message to the market. That’s why I need to have the largest booth near the front of the show, too, because it’s all about perception and positioning ourselves in the market. We need the show for the sales leads, which drive our sales for the next six months. If I meet one large end user who turns into a big sale, the extra revenue pays for it all and makes everything worthwhile. This is the only time I get to see my sales staff or other coworkers from around the country. We have a sales meeting this week, too, so it helps to defray the costs. Success of alternatives The realities of 2020, and the challenges to the business world, will impact the nature of commerce for years to come Given the experience of the year 2020 without any trade shows, might some of these justifications melt away? At a minimum, companies will be taking a hard look next year to evaluate what they missed about the trade show experience, and more importantly, what the impact was on their business (if any). What is the future of trade shows? After the 2020 hiatus, exhibitors and attendees alike will be starting with a clean slate, taking a fresh look, reexamining the value proposition with new eyes, braced by the successes (while acknowledging the failures) of alternatives that emerged as necessities during a global pandemic. Ensuring safety and security The realities of 2020, and the challenges to the business world, will impact the nature of commerce for years to come - including trade shows. During the pandemic, we have all had to reinvent ourselves, deploy new strategies, work around new challenges, and in the end, hopefully, emerge better for it. There’s no reason trade shows shouldn’t undergo the same transformation. And it’s likely the “new normal” could look very different. The security market has found new opportunities during the pandemic, including new applications for existing technology and a renewed emphasis on the importance of ensuring safety and security. That positivity will hopefully carry our industry triumphantly into the new decade, and trade shows will adapt to find their place in the newly revitalised industry. As it should be.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will be participating at ISC West in a big way. Representatives of the federal department will be taking part in more education sessions this year, and the DHS tech-scouting team will be on hand to view the latest technologies on display at the show. ISC West is being affected only minimally by the COVID-19 coronavirus, which is having an impact on international business travel, specifically to and from China. One consequence of coronavirus travel restrictions is a decision by Reed Exhibitions International not to proceed with a dedicated pavilion for Chinese companies at ISC West, March 17-20. In the main hall, however, some Chinese companies will remain in the show and staff their exhibit booths with U.S. office personnel and resources. Importantly, the ISC West event is moving forward as planned. Several trade show organisers globally have cancelled events because of fears of spreading the disease. For example, the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona was cancelled at the end of February. “Our clear focus is on the health and safety for our entire ISC community, and empathy and compassion for our Chinese customers relative to personal health and safety, and the very challenging business predicament for these companies,” says Will Wise, Group Vice President, Security & Gaming Portfolio, Reed Exhibitions. The U.S. took quick action to put major travel restrictions in place, including no incoming flights/travel from China. “The status is ever-evolving and we’ll be keeping the expo floor plan updated,” says Wise. The China pavilion In previous years, the China pavilion had hosted 50 or more companies as part of what was formerly known as “Global Expo,” located in the Venetian Ballroom adjacent to the Sands Convention Center. In 2019, the slate of companies in the Venetian Ballroom expanded to include some domestic exhibitors as well as the international companies. Importantly, the ISC West event is moving forward as plannedThis year, Venetian Ballroom exhibits will continue without the participation of Chinese companies. There will be international exhibitors from countries outside China as well as some domestic companies, including the Emerging Technology Zone, where new startups will highlight their latest innovations. Additionally, a new pavilion highlighting Loss Prevention and Supply Chain companies will be featured, and there will be an educational theatre offering free sessions on topics such as drones and robotics. Reed Exhibitions strongly urges exhibitors and visitors to refer to the guidelines and protocols as suggested by the World Health Organization and local/national public health authorities to contain and mitigate against any further spread of the virus. Positive Technologies researchers, Vladimir Kononovich and Alexey Stennikov have discovered vulnerabilities in the Wincor Cineo ATMs, with the RM3 and CMD-V5 dispensers (Wincor is currently owned by Diebold Nixdorf). ATM cyber-attacks With access to the dispenser controller’s USB port, an attacker can install an outdated or modified firmware version (for example, with disabled encryption), to bypass the encryption and make cash withdrawals. Diebold Nixdorf (Diebold Incorporated) has more than 1 million of its ATMs installed worldwide, making it one of the largest ATM manufacturers, with a 32 percent share of the global market. Most previous generations of ATMs could not withstand black-box attacks. In such cases, a hacker connects to the dispenser, via a computer or mobile device, and sends a special code, which results in the ATM dispensing money. In research performed by Positive Technologies in 2018, 69 percent of ATMs turned out to be vulnerable to such attacks and could be hacked in minutes. This protection is achieved by using end-to-end encryption between an ATM computer and the dispenser. The computer sends encrypted commands to the dispenser and a hacker cannot withdraw money, without encryption keys stored on the ATM computer. Vladimir Kononovich, Senior Specialist of ICS Security, at Positive Technologies, said “In the case of Wincor Cineo, we managed to figure out the command encryption used in the interaction between the PC and the controller, and bypass the protection against black-box attacks. At a popular website, we bought the same dispensing controller, as the one used in Wincor's ATMs.” Issues of bugs in controller code and old encryption keys Vladimir Kononvich adds, “Bugs in the controller code and old encryption keys allowed us to connect to an ATM, using our own computer (as in a classic black-box attack) and bypass the encryption, and make cash withdrawal. Currently, the attack scenario consists of three steps - Connecting a computer to an ATM, loading outdated and vulnerable firmware, and exploiting the vulnerabilities to access the cassettes, inside the safe.” According to Vladimir Kononovich, some manufacturers rely on security through obscurity, with proprietary protocols that are poorly studied and the goal of making it difficult for attackers to procure equipment, in order to find vulnerabilities in such devices. However, the research shows that such equipment is not difficult to find on the open market and analyse, which can be used by criminal groups. CVE-2018-9099 and CVE-2018-9100 vulnerabilities The first flaw, CVE-2018-9099, was detected in the firmware of the CMD-V5 dispenser Both vulnerabilities received a CVSSv3.0 score of 6.8. To fix the vulnerabilities, credit organisations must request the latest firmware version from ATM manufacturers. Moreover, as an additional security factor, the vendor should enable physical authentication for the operator during firmware installation. hardwear.io security conference On October 29, Vladimir Kononovich will talk about the detected vulnerabilities at the hardwear.io hardware security conference, taking place in The Netherlands. In 2018, Positive Technologies experts helped eliminate vulnerabilities in ATMs of another major ATM machines manufacturer, NCR (NCR Corporation).

Apstec Systems (Apstec) announces that its Human Security Radar (HSR) system will be deployed at the Palexpo Exhibition and Congress Centre in Geneva to improve safety and security for the International Motor Show 2019. Asptec’s HSR system is the world’s first fully automatic real-time mass people screening solution. Held over a period of ten days, the Geneva International Motor Show is one of the automotive industry’s flagship events and attracts large numbers of visitors every year. The organisers are anticipating up to three-quarters of a million visitors over the duration of this year’s event, with capacity reaching 150,000 attendees a day during peak times. Largest conference centres The Palexpo is one of the largest conference centres in Europe, and as such has a duty of care to its visitors HSR is uniquely well suited to managing this level of throughput and providing a high level of security without causing disruption to the flow of visitors into the venue, or negatively impacting their experience. Two HSR systems will be deployed for the show, each capable of screening up to 10,000 people per hour. The Palexpo is one of the largest conference centres in Europe, and as such has a duty of care to its visitors. Traditional security checkpoints or manual searches, which scan one individual at a time, are not suited to large venues and public places, leading to queues and delays. Although security is still paramount, attention has moved towards the need to add a critical level of defence that doesn’t impede visitor experience. Cost-effective solution HSR was designed to address this challenge, and offers a practical and cost-effective solution to security screening in high footfall scenarios. The first fully automated, real-time mass screening solution, HSR provides seamless security to protect public places from terrorist attacks. Developed by specialists in the fields of radio physics, electronics and software engineering, the walkthrough system has been built in conjunction with authorities and ‘end users’ in security and counter-terrorism. HSR screens for mass casualty threats including improvised explosive devices concealed on the body or in body-worn bags, and firearms wherever they are carried, without the need for an operator to inspect suspect materials. It leverages centimeter wave technology, meaning it can discriminate explosives from benign materials, with a high degree of accuracy. Security screening The Palexpo’s deployment of HSR is the latest major implementation of this new technology Gregory Labzovsky, CEO, Apstec, explained: “Until recently, it’s been almost impossible to secure public spaces in a simple and cost-effective way, with existing approaches to security screening proving to be impractical, inconvenient and expensive to operate. We’re delighted to be working with The Geneva International Motor Show to enhance safety for thousands of motoring exhibitors and enthusiasts.” The Palexpo’s deployment of HSR is the latest major implementation of this new technology. The system has been installed in some of the world’s busiest airports, as well as in sports stadiums, entertainment venues, mass transport hubs and networks.
Siklu Inc., a global provider of millimeter-wave solutions, announced that it has been selected by the City of Cambridge, England, to provide wireless connectivity for the city’s CCTV surveillance system in its town centre. The Siklu EtherHaul radios deployed in Cambridge City Centre replace the 5.8 GHz wireless technology previously used by the city for its CCTV network. Wireless mmWave technology Cambridge City Centre is a commercial and historic district that is adjacent to Cambridge University, making it a high traffic area for traditional 5 GHz wireless networks that are used by businesses, university departments and residents. Siklu radios bypass the congested 5.8 GHz spectrum wireless frequency by using the millimeter wave spectrum to transmit information across Cambridge’s CCTV networks, providing an interference-free and secured communication infrastructure for the city. “Siklu’s millimeter wave technology eliminated the camera latency issues that the previous wireless infrastructure presented,” said Ron Johnson, the owner of Videcom Security, which installed the Siklu radios for the city. “The CCTV network in the city centre is now so robust that we have been able to install additional cameras in the area for more comprehensive security coverage without sacrificing fibre-like network speed, reliability and stability.” Secure network communication The public CCTV system shared by Cambridge and several other cities in the district monitors 254 cameras total, 24 hours a day and 365 days a year to monitor public events, thwart crime, manage traffic and provide residents and businesses with a safe place to live and work. Unlike legacy wireless networks whose wide beams can be vulnerable to interception, the Siklu radios deployed in Cambridge’s CCTV system use ultra-narrow beams in the 60GHz millimeter wave spectrum to transmit information across the network securely, making the radios inherently secure from interceptions and hacking. As a result, sensitive information can be transmitted across the network securely. “As technology advances and physical security requires more and more security and reliable network bandwidth, Siklu can offer cities like Cambridge the infrastructure needed to keep city centres and other areas safe,” said Eyal Assa, Siklu’s CEO. The Siklu EtherHaul mmWave product line will be showcased at IFSEC as part of Milestone Systems’ stand #E750, where Siklu will also conduct a live demonstration.
More than one hundred years after the first race, ACO (Automobile Club de l’Ouest, or roughly translated, the Automobile Club of the West), creator and organiser of the famous 24 hours of Le Mans, has selected the leading integrator of a secure and traceable access control solution, LOCKEN for its fast and reliable security system. 24 hours of Le Mans Behind the tireless car tracks, there is a set of intricate and complex facilities. In close proximity to the entrance, which welcomes more than quarter of a million spectators, there is a Museum, about 40 restaurants, 20 shops, a medical centre, security stations all along the circuit, paddocks, where more than 10,000 competition tyres are stored, and of course the stands for each of the 60 competitors. This accounts for hundreds of different access points, requiring a variety of permissions, which must be closely controlled and monitored by ACO. Access rights are extensive for ACO employees, and some of the circuit’s customers, such as Porsche, which operates a modern building on the track side, while competitors and special guests have limited rights. The Porsche Experience Centre allows fans to try out its cars, all year round, on an allocated part of the circuit. With approximately 800,000 visitors hosted on the site each year, ACO has to account for 300,000 accesses, 53,000 of which must be managed during the competition, or the equivalent of 1,800 accesses controlled per day in June.
