Tuskegee University, a renowned Historically Black College and University (HBCU), has launched a strategic initiative to enhance campus security using Honeywell's AI-driven smart access technology.

This multi-year project aims to bolster the safety of students, faculty, staff, and visitors at Tuskegee University.

Integrated security solutions

Through the deployment of Honeywell’s advanced commercial security solutions, Tuskegee University will implement centralised access control alongside real-time monitoring tools.

These upgrades are expected to streamline incident response times and simplify security team operations, positioning the institution at the forefront of on-campus safety amid increasing demands for enhanced security across higher education.

Key technological features

As part of this initiative, Tuskegee University will integrate Honeywell’s Building Automation solutions, which include several pivotal components:

  • LenelS2’s OnGuard Access Control System: This system will act as the centralised platform managing campus-wide access and monitoring authorised entry. It will also regulate sensors and door locks, allowing administrators to unlock and secure doors as needed, thereby restricting unauthorised access while ensuring occupant safety. LenelS2 became a part of Honeywell’s portfolio following its acquisition in 2024.
  • Wireless Dorm Locking System: This feature will offer secure and flexible access for students to their dorms and living spaces via mobile credentials on smartphones or watches, reducing reliance on physical cards. Students can digitally secure their dormitory doors from within their rooms.
  • AI-Enabled Video Monitoring: With the installation of over 1,500 security cameras by early 2026, this system will provide real-time anomaly detection and enhanced situational awareness, improving response times across the campus.

Commitment to safety and modernisation

Jeff Stanek, President of Security and Access Solutions for Honeywell Building Automation, commented, “We’re proud to help Tuskegee University create a safer and more responsive environment for faculty and students. Together, we’re helping deliver an adaptive system including AI-enabled technology that helps give campus leaders the confidence and control to meet evolving security demands.”

Dr. Mark A. Brown, President and CEO of Tuskegee University, further noted, “One way that we put ‘Students First’ is through using the latest technical tools to help ensure their safety and security. Supporting this is our partnership with Honeywell, which helped us transform the campus experience by integrating state-of-the-art technology to support ongoing enhancements for our students, faculty and staff."

"The work they have performed supports the technical component of the Renaissance Era that the university has entered. It also aligns with our plans to modernise the campus in a variety of ways but continuing the Students First focus.”

Tuskegee University, one of the nation's most respected Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), announced a multi-year, strategic project to implement a fully integrated security system across its campus using Honeywell’s AI-enabled smart access technology.

The upgrades will aim to further strengthen Tuskegee University’s commitment to the safety of its students, faculty, staff and visitors.

Tuskegee University will utilise Honeywell’s state-of-the-art commercial security solutions to deploy centralised access control and real-time monitoring tools, helping improve incident response times and reduce operational complexity for security teams.

Mounting pressure to enhance security

As higher education institutions nationwide face mounting pressure to enhance security and adapt to new technologies, these upgrades aim to position the University as a leader in on-campus safety.

Tuskegee University will leverage several of Honeywell’s Building Automation solutions. Key features include:

LenelS2’s OnGuard access control system

It will serve as the centralised security platform that manages all access campuswide. The system will help facilitate and monitor authorised access.

It will also provide control over sensors and door locks, allowing administrators to, for example, unlock doors before class and secure them during class to help restrict unauthorised entry while protecting occupants. LenelS2 is one of the newest additions to Honeywell’s Building Automation portfolio following its acquisition in 2024.

Wireless dorm locking system

It will enable secure, flexible access for students to their dorm rooms and living spaces. Students will enter living areas with mobile credentials via a smartphone or watch, eliminating the need for plastic cards, which can be easily misplaced. Once students enter their dorm room, they will be able to digitally lock the door from anywhere inside.

AI-enabled video monitoring

It is anticipated to provide campus real-time anomaly detection, enhanced situational awareness and faster response by using more than 1,500 security cameras that will be deployed on campus by early 2026.

Safer and more responsive environment

“We’re proud to help Tuskegee University create a safer and more responsive environment for faculty and students,” said Jeff Stanek, President, Security and Access Solutions for Honeywell Building Automation. “Together, we’re helping deliver an adaptive system including AI-enabled technology that helps give campus leaders the confidence and control to meet evolving security demands.”

“One way that we put ‘Students First’ is through using the latest technical tools to help ensure their safety and security. Supporting this is our partnership with Honeywell, which helped us transform the campus experience by integrating state-of-the-art technology to support ongoing enhancements for our students, faculty and staff,” said Dr. Mark A. Brown, President and CEO, Tuskegee University.

“The work they have performed supports the technical component of the Renaissance Era that the university has entered. It also aligns with our plans to modernise the campus in a variety of ways but continuing the Students First focus.”
