OpenAI has introduced a set of enhanced safety measures for teenagers using ChatGPT, aiming to manage growing apprehension about AI's influence among young users.
The new teen accounts come equipped with features like the option to disable voice responses, helping users distinguish between the AI and a human conversational partner. Additionally, OpenAI has implemented prompts encouraging young users to take breaks during tool usage, promoting healthier digital habits.
Prioritising real-world connections
Although the update was not prompted by a specific incident, it addresses broad concerns regarding perceptions of AI sentience. OpenAI has stated the protections are designed to match the developmental needs of teenagers, emphasising the importance of maintaining real-world relationships and supporting safe usage patterns over time. Teen accounts will be automatically assigned to individuals identified as under 18 during registration, as well as to users whom OpenAI determines to be minors, while those under age 13 remain prohibited from using the platform.

AI adoption is being introduced across all sectors and the children who understand how AI works and how to use it responsibly will be at an advantage as AI increasingly becomes a life skill. With this in mind, regulation should prioritise educating children on how to use it safely and what potential red flags to look out for.”

According to Barnhart, proactive involvement from parents, educators, and social media companies is crucial in guiding children's technology use. This involves having open dialogues about online dangers and creating clear boundaries for children's interaction with technology, which is rapidly influencing various sectors. Encouraging informed and responsible digital engagement can aid families in helping their children navigate the online landscape safely.
In alignment with these goals, OpenAI is also enhancing its Study Mode feature, initially launched last year to support student learning without offering direct answers. This feature will now include options for setting specific activation hours, further aiding in educational pursuits. OpenAI has reported a vast majority of its younger users, nine out of ten, engage with ChatGPT for educational support.
