Kong Inc., a prominent developer in cloud API and artificial intelligence technologies, has unveiled new advancements to assist enterprises in adopting and expanding MCP and agentic AI development. Announced during the API Summit 2025, these innovations include enhanced MCP gateway capabilities within the AI Gateway, along with the MCP-enabled Konnect Developer Portal.
These solutions aim to provide a cohesive and secure framework for creating, operating, discovering, and managing MCP-based tools and applications that underpin today's AI agents.
Enterprise Opportunities in Agentic AI
The introduction of these solutions highlights Kong's dedication to providing the necessary infrastructure and developer tools that enterprises require to safely accelerate the adoption of AI coding assistants, workflows, and advanced AI. According to Marco Palladino, CTO and Co-Founder of Kong Inc., “Agentic AI offers tremendous opportunities for enterprises, but realising that potential requires the right infrastructure. While MCP has emerged as the backbone for agentic workflows, there are real challenges around security, reliability, and performance.”
Palladino further stated, “With these new product features, we're proactively solving some of the most important infrastructure challenges inherent to the protocol, and helping organisations put advanced AI agents into production faster and more securely.”
Enhancements in MCP Governance
Additionally, a centralized authentication system is available, enabling users to secure all MCP servers
Kong's AI Gateway introduces several MCP governance capabilities. These include the automatic generation and protection of MCP servers from Kong-managed APIs to streamline the launch of intelligent AI agents, thus enhancing developer productivity across enterprises. Additionally, a centralized authentication system is available, enabling users to secure all MCP servers seamlessly using Kong’s MCP OAuth 2.1 authentication plugin.
This allows for the consistent implementation of security policies across various servers, facilitating a compliant and governed environment for AI agents. Furthermore, enhanced observability and governance features enable data capture related to MCP tools and workflows, which can be analysed within Kong Konnect dashboards for performance monitoring and governance improvements.
Innovative Integration with AI
The Konnect Developer Portal now supports seamless MCP-enabled access, transforming them into MCP servers to foster API discovery for AI coding assistants like Cursor. New tools such as the AI Integration Composer and AI Integration Runner further support the identification, composition, and execution of intelligent API endpoints, which are essential for building MCP servers and integrations. This integration pathway is fortified with the reliability and security ensured by the Kong AI Gateway.
Introduction of Open-Source SDK ‘Volcano’
In addition to these innovations, Kong has launched Volcano, an open-source software development kit (SDK) aimed at simplifying and expediting the creation of MCP-driven AI agents. Volcano offers developers a streamlined, secure framework for designing, testing, and deploying agentic applications that effortlessly integrate with APIs and MCP servers managed through Kong Konnect.
Highlighting the SDK’s transformative potential, Palladino noted, “None of the existing frameworks for AI agent development have delivered on the ease, security, and simplicity that developers need. Volcano changes that. Combined with the agentic infrastructure that Konnect provides, organisations from builders to Platform teams now have everything they need to start creating advanced AI powered integrations, workflows, and user experiences.”
