Bird Aerosystems, the developer of Airborne Missile Protection Systems (AMPS) and Airborne Surveillance, Information, and Observation (ASIO) solutions, has won a new contract in Central Europe. Under the contract, Bird Aerosystems will upgrade and improve the AMPS systems which were previously provided to the Czech Air Force. Bird’s AMPS are installed on the Czech Air Force Mi-17 helicopters and successfully and operationally deployed in different dangerous and complicated conflict zones, including Afghanistan. The overall program includes an upgrade to the MILDS UV detection sensors and the MCDU Mission computers provided by Bird Aerosystems as well as provision for future installation of Bird’s MACS (Missile Approach Confirmation Sensor). The system will protect the presidential Boeing 737 aircraft during its international flights around the world. Upon receiving a pre-alarm warning from the electro-optical sensors, MACS slews to the direction of the incoming threat and verifies the threat’s validity. Concurrently, MACS also collects relevant information on the target (velocity and distance) and calculates its time-to-impact, enabling the effective countermeasure response to the incoming missile. MACS ensures that only real missiles will be declared by the system and reacted upon.
