The French authorities have renewed the maintenance contract of the French Coastal Surveillance System, SPATIONAV, building on an over 20 yearlong successful collaboration between the French Navy and Airbus for safer oceans. Since 2002, Airbus develops, deploys and maintains the SPATIONAV system, under the supervision of the DGA (French General Armament Directorate) for the programme direction and the SSF (Service de Soutien de la Flotte) for the sustainment, to support the French authorities gather information, direct maritime surveillance and intervention at sea. Maritime navigation security The system provides them with a tactical picture of the maritime situation to prepare and conduct their respective operations related to maritime border protection, search and rescue missions, maritime navigation security, detection of illicit activities and environment protection. With over 6000 kilometers of coasts monitored in real time 24/7 by 750 operators, SPATIONAV is the cornerstone of France’s maritime surveillance operations. It provides the administrations involved in state sea operations with a real time surveillance system It provides the French Navy and the main national administrations involved in state sea operations with a real time surveillance system covering maritime approaches for mainland France and the French West Indies - Guiana zone. Thus, it constitutes a veritable multi-agency operation and command information system for the French Navy, the Coast Guards and the Customs. Cyber secured gateway SPATIONAV’s coastal Recognized Maritime Picture integrates over 10,000 real-time tracks thanks to a vast network of sensors spread over the French coasts (105 sites, 88 radars, 77 AIS stations and 8 equipped Falcons). In addition, the system integrates over 50,000 extra European and International tracks through a cyber secured gateway. The consolidated situation awareness is shared with the entire SPATIONAV community thereby optimising missions at sea. SPATIONAV is based on STYRIS Coastal Surveillance System (CSS). The solution associates core CSS functions as a real-time coastal Recognised Maritime Picture, 24/7 monitoring of areas of interest, advanced tracking and data fusion with some key features among which improved event management and advanced simulation capabilities to support decision making. Command and control tools Ensuring an informed vision of maritime activities in real time is a technological prowess" Specifically, the solution supports operator decision by providing intuitive command and control tools to accelerate decision making and stakeholder coordination, to maintain operator focus and to reduce the workload. Airbus has completed the upgrade of the Port of Sydney VTS (Vessel Traffic Services), through its maritime product family STYRIS®. Airbus’ maritime security and safety solution ensures the complete traffic monitoring of Sydney Habour and Port Botany, both managed by the Port Authority of New South Wales (Port Authority). The recently completed upgrade of Sydney’s VTS to STYRIS® comes after the agreement signed in 2010, when Airbus was initially awarded the contract to supply the Sydney VTS system. In 2019, with this upgrade Airbus offers the Port Authority the latest VTS Product Generation of Airbus, providing an efficient way to manage the increasing vessel traffic while meeting updated local VTS regulations. Radar coverage of the Sydney VTS The Airbus VTS system provides the Port Authority with real-time maritime information Airbus has also extended the radar coverage of the Sydney VTS with the integration of a new radar site, located in Circular Quay, following the relocation of the former 115 metre high AMP Building radar to a new home in Darling Harbour. With an offshore overview for pre-planning all vessel entries, the Airbus VTS system provides the Port Authority with real-time maritime information, helps organise port traffic, provide navigation assistance to vessels entering Sydney waters and ensures smooth operational conditions. Complex environment for authorities The Port of Sydney is arranged in two distinct areas: Port Jackson (commonly named Sydney Harbour), home to the famous and distinct Sydney Opera House and heritage-listed Sydney Harbour Bridge and Port Botany. While Port Botany plays a significant part in the trade handled through the Ports, Sydney Harbour also receives a large number of daily vessel movements, from small leisure boats to the largest passenger cruise ships, through the Passenger Terminals. In addition, there are large volumes of Sydney ferry services that form part of the city public transportation network with its hub is located in Circular Quay. The Sydney waters with their high density of traffic represent a complex environment to manage for the Port Authority, whose focus is not only to drive the operational efficiency of Sydney Ports but also to ensure every movement is conducted safely for all who use the busy waterways. The commercial satellite communications contract is valid until 2023 Airbus Defence and Space has been awarded a contract worth 113.8 million euros by the procurement agency of German Armed Forces (BAAINBw) to provide commercial satellite communication services until 2023. Airbus Defence and Space has been providing these satcom services since 2006. Access to selected C- and Ku-band transponders The contract which is valid for the next seven-and-a-half years includes the provision of access to selected C- and Ku-band transponders that are used for a variety of applications including voice and data connections in Germany, between main bases abroad as well as for boats and vessels of the Navy. Airbus Defence and Space has also been recently awarded the in-orbit operation of the military COMSATBw1 and COMSATBw 2 satellites as well as the operation of a large teleport and associated networks in Weilheim, Germany. Airbus Defence and Space providing service since 2006 The combined use of military satellites with commercial satcom provides the German Armed Forces with the capability to establish voice, video, database access and IP (Internet Protocol) services in a robust and flexible way without reliance on single assets. “Satellite communications is an indispensable means for modern armed forces to connect theatres of operation with the homeland and to accomplish missions abroad”, said Evert Dudok, Head of the Communications, Intelligence & Security (CIS) business line at Airbus Defence and Space. “For this task a resource mix based on military satellites complemented by leased commercial capacities has proven to give the best flexibility, resilience and value.” Airbus Defence and Space was responsible for the development and deployment of the current German Armed Forces SATCOMBw system and is the provider of choice for satcom operations and services since 2006.
Under the terms of partnership, Airbus and BAE Systems will jointly develop a new line of global synthetic aperture radar products Airbus Defence and Space and BAE Systems have launched a strategic alliance to produce, market and sell innovative geospatial intelligence (GEOINT) products and solutions using state-of-the-art data collected exclusively by TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X radar satellites. Under the terms of the partnership, Airbus Defence and Space and BAE Systems will jointly develop a new line of global SAR (synthetic aperture radar) products that are unrivalled in terms of accuracy, resolution and quality. The two companies will exclusively market these products to US government, commercial, and select international customers. “BAE Systems’ unique expertise will leverage the SAR data we are collecting into refined sets of geospatial intelligence products, that meet stringent US government standards,” said Evert Dudok, Head of Communications, Intelligence & Security at Airbus Defence and Space. The precision and richness of Airbus Defence and Space’s radar data products, combined with the rigour of BAE Systems’ GEOINT exploitation and analysis expertise, will drive the development of advanced geospatial products that will benefit both the public and private sectors. The resulting GEOINT products will enhance mission planning for defence customers, support flight systems, improve emergency response, and help the world’s energy sector strategically plan new power grids, plot pipelines and manage resources. “The Airbus Defence and Space radar satellite missions are collecting data of unprecedented quality and accuracy on a global scale,” said DeEtte Gray, President of BAE Systems’ Intelligence & Security sector. “The products we are teaming to develop represent a major leap forward in SAR-based products and services that enhance various sophisticated applications.” TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X are very high-resolution X-Band SAR systems that collect data for precision change detection applications, maritime monitoring, digital elevation modelling, ground control point extractions and topographical mapping in cloud persistent regions. The two satellites also acquired the data used to produce Airbus Defence and Space’s state-of-the-art WorldDEM, which is a highly accurate, homogenous global digital elevation product.
