Motorola Solutions has announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Openpath Security Inc., a cloud-based mobile access control provider. Motorola Solutions expects to close the transaction by the end of the month. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed in the announcement. Openpath company takeover Openpath is a renowned company within the access control industry. Openpath’s solution makes businesses more secure with multi-factor authentication, enables a contactless entry experience and can be easily scaled and managed due to its cloud-based architecture. “Securing businesses around the world has never been more critical,” said Greg Brown, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Motorola Solutions. Combining the power of video security and access control This acquisition enables us to combine the power of video security and access control together" Greg Brown adds, “This acquisition enables us to combine the power of video security and access control together, providing unprecedented situational awareness, where every physical entry and exit is authenticated and recorded with access control and video.” Businesses will have 24/7 visibility of their access points anywhere around the world and be able to provide a frictionless walk-through experience enabled by a mobile app. Supporting enterprises with security solutions The combined leadership of Motorola Solutions and Openpath in video security and access control will allow Motorola Solutions to build on its extensive footprint, in supporting enterprise customers, with an unparalleled security solution. “With Motorola Solutions, we will continue to pioneer the future of the access control industry,” said Alex Kazerani, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Openpath, adding “We couldn’t be more excited to work together in bringing best-in-class, innovative solutions to organisations around the world to make their business a safer place to be.”
Openpath, a provider of renowned touchless access control and security automation for the built environment, has reimagined the ideal digital badge for today’s modern workforce and workplace. As an industry disruptor, Openpath first revolutionised mobile access control by studying user behaviour to add obvious, simple, yet powerful tools that ensure a frictionless user experience while making organisations more secure. Now, Openpath’s new reimagined digital badge gives system administrators new ways to address their company’s security policies and procedures with greater focus, flexibility and features such as: Customised digital badge design tool so the user’s physical ID badge and picture now match their Digital Credential Call or email for help feature to eliminate lock outs “at the door” Single Sign-On App authentication through Okta to ensure security compliance Door auto-detect technology recognises closest door on the home screen Dynamic Status tags can change the user’s work group or vaccination status in real-time Streamlined support options to determine where and how employee questions are answered, either via Openpath or directly to their company’s security operations center (SOC). Touchless access control They are transforming traditional access control into an experience that is modern and seamless “As an enterprise customer of Openpath, we’ve been impressed with their ability to innovate and deliver a product that is both highly secure and that elevates the employee experience. They are transforming traditional access control into an experience that is modern, seamless, and meets the need of the new workplace," said Brooke Lierman, Senior Director of Workplace Technologies at Okta. At LabFellows, which offers remote lab spaces and cloud-based software automation for companies working on vaccine research for COVID-19, Openpath’s remote management, touchless access, and mobile credentials have heightened the security, reduced administrative burdens and improved the overall experience of their smartlab workspaces. Physical keycard “We have so much intellectual property housed inside our laboratories, and a constantly rotating roster of customer tenants. Adding to that are reduced occupancy guidelines and heightened safety concerns due to COVID-19. With all of these challenges, Openpath has been key to the operational success, safety and security of both LabFellows and our HomeLab members,” said Julio de Unamuno IV, LabFellows Founder & CEO. The long-standing legacy of a physical keycard for identification being more secure than a digital keycard is no longer true. Mobile security has advanced, and the security vulnerabilities of a physical keycard, which are easily lost or cloned, still remain. Physical ID badge Furthermore, mobile badging ensures a pervasive, unified safety and security experience across all of an organisation’s company apps, whether on browser or mobile, and for the first time, notifies companies right at the door if there is a cyber security issue, and gives them the appropriate steps to resolve it easily, quickly and efficiently. Many enterprise companies require staff to wear a physical credential for compliance purposes While there will always be a role for the physical ID badge, Openpath has chosen to improve upon it by giving it a digital twin with features that other mobile solutions simply don’t offer, and customised solutions tailored to accommodate a company’s size, scale, and specific security needs. For example, many enterprise companies require staff to wear a physical credential for compliance purposes. Access control system Supplementing that with a digital credential offers a fail-safe in the event the physical badge is damaged or a second form of ID is needed to show an updated photo or other pertinent information, such as vaccination status. “The beauty of the Openpath’s open architecture system is that it allows us to continuously innovate and create new options for companies that weren’t thought to be possible with older technologies,” said Alex Kazerani, CEO and Co-Founder of Openpath. “We have been breaking barriers to mobile access control since day one and today we are so excited to deliver a new digital badge that surpasses the security of a physical badge, plus offers custom features and extensive functionality for system administrators of all types of companies and sizes.”

Find and Follow: With the combination of visual verification, accurate video search, real-time alerts all linked to access events, security teams can find people and follow them through the timeline of a security event as they move around a facility. This capability allows for rapid resolution in real-time of security situations and enhances audit and compliance reviews with easy access and accurate tracking. Real-Time Alerting: Activating the alert functionality will ensure immediate notification for access events such as doors being propped open. Access event alerting will now include video footage to improve decision making for security teams and allow security teams to be mobile and cover more ground with less effort. Enhanced Reporting & Analytics: Cisco Meraki’s cutting-edge video analytics and Openpath’s Bluetooth Low Energy technology enabled presence data to provide valuable insights and data to improve operations, reduce security risks, and predict future issues before they occur. A quick wave of the hand is all it takes to unlock lobby doors, conference rooms, elevators, turnstiles and more. Backwards Compatibility: Openpath can run on legacy wiring, reducing costs and time to upgrade any legacy system. Furthermore, Openpath will work with your existing badges and readers, integrates with existing directory services like Active Directory, Okta and OneLogin, and can run hybrid alongside any legacy access control system providing Cisco Meraki customers with deployment flexibility and an easy upgrade path. By creating more effective and efficient offices with smart technology, companies can improve productivity, employee happiness and profit.” As a company on a mission to improve workplace efficiency and security, Openpath developed the most secure and convenient mobile access control system on the market. With Openpath Access, the company’s flagship product, employees can securely unlock any door in the office using the smartphone that never leaves their pocket. The system automatically authenticates a user’s smartphone as they near the door via LTE, Wi-Fi and/or Bluetooth, ensuring seamless access and fast door unlocks, regardless of cell service or power outages.
Openpath, a company on a mission to bring frictionless access and better security to our workplaces, reveals that 94% of its users now use their smartphone over a keycard to enter the office, an enviable accomplishment in an industry with shockingly low mobile adoption rates. Recognising a general lack of mobile adoption in the access control industry, Openpath launches the Mullion Smart Reader to fill out its portfolio of access control readers. The sleek, versatile and compact design of the Mullion Smart Reader enables Openpath to further provide the most convenient form of mobile entry - hands-free, keyless, mobile access – to businesses everywhere. Traditional access credentials “Employees want convenience; they don’t want to go through a bunch of steps to get into their office in the morning. With the majority of our users agreeing that the simplest way to unlock their office door is to stand in front of it, we developed the hardware and software to deliver that experience to any office setting,” said Alex Kazerani, Openpath’s co-founder and CEO. “By achieving 94% mobile adoption over traditional access credentials, we have cracked the code to delivering the user experience employees want with the elegant, easy-to-install hardware businesses need.” Openpath user analytics show that the majority of users have not only shifted to using their mobile phone for access, but also prefer to leave their smartphone in their bag or pocket to enter the office. With Openpath’s Touch access feature, employees get the convenience of an automatic door with the security of an encrypted, credential-based access system. Hands-free entry With the new Mullion Smart Reader, it is easier than ever for companies to install Openpath in the most convenient spot to enable hands-free entry with Touch Faster and more convenient than opening an app or using a key or fob, Openpath Touch automatically recognises a user’s smartphone as he/she approaches, even if it's in a purse or pocket, and allows the user to enter with only a wave of their hand or a touch of the reader. With the new Mullion Smart Reader, it is easier than ever for companies to install Openpath in the most convenient spot to enable hands-free entry with Touch. Designed to fit anywhere and bring a modern look-and-feel to locations that require a smaller reader form factor, the Mullion Reader can mount on any wall or door frame and leverage existing reader wiring. Once installed, Openpath’s technology uses Bluetooth and motion detection to authenticate the user and unlock the door. Like all Openpath Smart Readers, this new model continues to support keycards and fobs to ensure flexible options for those who want to offer various credential options. James Segil, co-founder and President of Openpath, said: “To truly enable convenient, elegant mobile access for all, we need to make smart office access control more accessible. With the introduction of this Mullion form-factor to our existing Smart Reader line-up, we are able to provide the many design and deployment options necessary to meet the demands of any building configuration.
