In a continued effort to inspire young minds and nurture budding tech enthusiasts, SHD has reinforced its commitment to the Dresden Student Computing Center (SRZ) by donating several unused laptops. This October, these contributions facilitate the establishment of a new mobile laptop lab, where students can explore various technical disciplines.
The recently donated laptops are integral to SRZ's mission of imparting essential programming skills to students. One of the specialised courses offered is "Robot Control," where participants gain hands-on experience with basic programming methods. Through the C programming language, students have the opportunity to code and manipulate a LEGO EV3 robot, laying a practical foundation for future technical pursuits.
Exploring electronics and GPU programming
Beyond programming, SRZ's curriculum includes annual courses titled "Electronics 1" and "Electronics 2." These courses involve designing electronic circuits and developing printed circuit boards, providing students with a comprehensive overview of electronic engineering.
Additionally, the centre offers a special course in GPU programming, introducing learners to OpenCL. This programming language is standardised for crafting computationally demanding algorithms specifically for modern graphics processing units (GPUs), emphasising the optimisation of algorithms for parallel processing tasks.
The provision of these new laptops ensures that students are well-equipped to delve into the expansive field of information technology (IT). Marco Graef, SHD’s Managing Director, commented on this initiative, stating, “Supporting young people with a passion for IT is very important to us. That's why we've not only supported the student computer centre for many years, but have also been providing training in cooperation with vocational academies and universities for over 20 years.”
