  • DHF obtained ISO 9001 certification, enhancing its reputation for professionalism and quality management.
  • New Competence Framework for Doors highlights collaboration and sets standards for installation and maintenance.
  • ABBE Level 3 Award in Compliance boosts fire safety and competencies in the roller shutter sector.

As 2025 comes to an end, the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) reflects on a year marked by significant achievements and collaboration in the security sector.

This year, DHF earned ISO 9001 certification, launched a new qualification, and published the Competence Framework, all while maintaining a strong commitment to its industry and members.

Initial highlights and key gatherings

2025 commenced with a sense of promise, according to DHF's Commercial Director, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens. In February, the Federation organised its inaugural Members' Conference at the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford. Over 200 industry professionals and members attended to engage in discussions and workshops, with notable speakers like Dafydd Williams from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, addressing vital topics such as the government’s response to Grenfell.

Employment law insights were provided by Gillian McAteer from Citation, while Flight Lieutenant John Nichol delivered a compelling keynote on his experience as a Gulf War prisoner, encouraging collaboration among attendees.

Notable qualifications and competence enhancements

The initiative is part of DHF’s longstanding mission to bolster industry standards and competence

April witnessed a significant milestone with the introduction of the ABBE Level 3 Award in Compliance and Safety of Fire-Resisting Roller Shutter Doors.

Developed by DHF, this qualification aims to bolster competence in a specialised area, already showing considerable uptake from companies focused on maintaining high standards in safety and compliance. The initiative is part of DHF’s longstanding mission to bolster industry standards and competence.

Completion of the construction leadership council framework

"Another defining achievement came with the completion of the Construction Leadership Council’s (CLC) Competence Framework for Doors, Gates and Shutters," explained Sowsbery-Stevens.

This project, a collaboration with the Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) and Sector Lead Group 10, took eighteen months and was guided by DHF and ADSA. The framework sets practical standards across installation, maintenance, and servicing, helping members like Amazon and Heathrow Airport meet required competence proofs.

Recognition and progress

This summer, DHF's ISO 9001 certification underscored its commitment to quality management.

September saw DHF authorised to issue Blue Skilled Worker cards for the Dock Leveller industry, recognising and supporting competence across its sector.

Engagement and outreach

DHF set open days in the UK and provided support in Ireland, maintaining ties and receiving positive feedback

Throughout the year, DHF aimed to stay connected with members, participating in national events such as The Security Event and the MLA Expo, and continued sponsoring the Automated Gate category at the AFI Awards.

With a focus on member engagement, DHF arranged open days in the UK and provided support in Ireland, strengthening ties and receiving positive feedback.

Challenges and people-centric focus

Despite challenges such as altered National Insurance contributions and a construction slowdown, the sector's resilience was evident, and DHF members reported steady demand in commercial and industrial markets.

As Patricia notes, the end of the year bids farewell to Nick Perkins, whose contributions were invaluable, alongside team changes that included welcoming new finance and commercial managers to support DHF’s growth.

Continuous improvement and future plans

As 2026 approaches, DHF plans further development with an Ofqual-regulated training programme for the building hardware industry, broadening its educational offerings.

Looking ahead, DHF commits to enhancing standards and supporting its members while representing the security sector robustly.
