While any valuable art collection, whether it is paintings, sculptures or other art, is to be seen and admired, they also represent a high security risk for the owners or the borrower, as some can be extremely valuable. Theft or damage can have severe financial consequences for the museums owning or displaying them, not only from an insurance perspective, but also from the potential damage to its reputation. There is a method of alerting security staff if an artwork is being touched or tampered with by detecting hands or any objects too close to it. OPTEX’s laser scanner can create customised vertical detection areas, like a virtual shield matching the size of the asset (up to 20/30cm precision). The REDSCAN sensor will detect any object breaching that virtual shield and can trigger an alarm, voice warning or activate CCTV. REDSCAN covers large areas As REDSCAN covers a large area (30m radius) an entire wall can be protected with only one scanner, and detection areas can be set up to protect a specific zone containing the works of art. By using the day/night settings (available with REDSCAN SH), the detection areas can be set differently to suit the time-specific need, to protect particular assets that may be targeted more at particular times during the day or night, for instance or the whole wall at a museum’s closing time. The intelligent laser sensor is also ideally suited to detect any intrusion into the building itself – through the roof, the windows, the façade or any other possible entry point. The ability of the sensor to create virtual layers of detection horizontally and vertically makes it well suited to protect any part of the building: the horizontal layer is ideal for detecting people on a flat roof or entering through the ceiling; and the virtual wall will cover the façade detecting anyone attempting to climb onto it. The laser technology works in any lighting conditions including in complete darkness, providing the exact X&Y coordinates to give the exact position of any object detected. REDSCAN is already integrated with most VMS and PSIM platforms and can trigger cameras to follow the targets through pre-set positions.
OPTEX REDSCAN laser detection technology is at the heart of a new system developed and delivered in the UK by Tew Plus, a system integrator, to enhance the safety of more than 400 level crossings from Scotland to the South Coast. Incorporates the LIDAR Following nearly two years of testing, Tew Plus achieved full Network Rail Product Approval for its Level Crossing Obstacle Detector (LIDAR) using the OPTEX REDSCAN as the core detection element. The complete MCB-OD Level Crossings solution incorporates the LIDAR as the Complementary Obstacle Detector (COD) working alongside RADAR and CCTV surveillance equipment. While the RADAR system is used to detect vehicles or large objects that can cause damage to the train and endanger the safety of its passengers, the LIDAR system is designed to protect pedestrians or cyclists who could be trapped between the barriers. The system is sensitive enough to detect a nine year-old child standing, laying upon or crossing the track. Fully automated system The signalling system tells the LIDAR system when the Level Crossing is active, and the detection system scans the crossing area within the barriers accordingly. If the crossing is clear, the signal turns green and the train can go through safely. If an object is detected, then the barriers are raised to enable that object (a vehicle or pedestrian) to leave the area before allowing the train to pass. The system is fully automated: if the object is static and the system has gone through three cycles a message can be sent to the train driver to proceed with caution at no more than 5 mph to determine what it is obstructing the track. Furthermore safety integrity level (SIL) 3 trials are underway in mainland Europe that will enable the LIDAR to become the primary obstacle detector approved to SIL 3 rating. So far more than 60 of the Tew Plus-designed LIDAR systems have been installed and a further 80 have been sold to Network Rail. The solution is to be rolled out to more than 400 level crossings over the next five years.
The challengeThe Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) operates an Air Traffic Control Centre, 4 long range radar sites and 2 air traffic radio communication sites spread out across Shannon, Cork and Mayo. From IAA's Control Centre at Shannon some 280,000 over-flights are handled per year, they can handle up to 80% of the air traffic travelling between North America and Europe.IAA are responsible for the safe transit of air traffic thought this busy air space therefore security is paramount to the health and safety of it's staff, visitors and equipment. Gerry Guihen, Property and Security Manager the IAA says: "To do this, our security system must be able to ensure that all our assets are protected and secure at all times. We must look at new ways of managing the increased threat (since 9/11) and ensuring that people and assets are protected." Not only is IAA responsible for the providing the management and aeronautical communications services in Irish controlled airspace, but it is also the regulator for safety standards within the Irish civil aviation sector.IAA needed a remotely managed perimeter and site protection security system that could be used to monitor security (and health and safety), a system that could cover large areas with the ability to monitor several sites from a central control centre for the overall protection of personnel and equipment.The solution With ADPRO PRO detector technology in combination with ADPRO FastTrace, IAA can now remotely monitor any breaches to its security The IAA had a need to detect breaches to their security by human targets even in low visibility over varying areas and on numerous sites. IAA's security needs extended over several large remote sites, so the high mounting of the ADPRO PRO detectors (up to 4 metre high) ensures the detectors are out of reach of possible vandalisation and are tamperproof. The PIR technology can distinguish between a human intruder and other movements that could possibly be picked up by detectors such as animals or the motion from bushes and trees, this therefore reduces the number of false alarms.The installation of ADPRO PRO detector's infra red technology can detect an intruder at up to 150 metres sensing temperature differences between them and the background. Due to the passive operation of the units, the area being protected cannot be determined by the intruder. The system is very easy to install and reliable in difficult conditions such as low visibility, snow and fog, important when taking into account factors such at the Irish weather. If the ADPRO PRO detector identifies an intruder it triggers an alarm that activates ADPRO FastTrace system which immediately sends pictures to a central security control room, making the system a quick and simple solution to managing security over a large distance and on multiple sites.With ADPRO PRO detector technology in combination with ADPRO FastTrace, IAA can now remotely monitor any breaches to its security (or any health and safety) issues on its sites spanning large areas directly to IAA's Security Control Centre at Shannon.Mr Guihen sees the ability to gather digital images across great distances as a break through in modern electronic security: "These new technologies are proving to be essential for today's businesses with sites spread out over a country and even over the world".The resultsIAA found that ADPRO FastTrace and the ADPRO PRO detector's infra-red technology was the ideal solution to providing the security that the IAA needs to protect its air traffic control centre and also its six remote locations housing essential radar and communications infrastructure across the region.The system was easy to install and Mr Guihen is very pleased with the results, he comments: "The system has been installed to protect, this is its primary function and we're very pleased with results."IAA found that ADPRO FastTrace and the ADPRO PRO detector's infra-red technology can also monitor potential Health and Safety issues, as footage of any accidents or incidents can be recorded to determine the causes and the issues dealt with quickly and efficiently Mr Smeallie of A1Omada, the systems integrator adds: "The size of the project, the distances covered and the vagaries of the Irish weather have all made this a challenging project, but the results speak for themselves."
