ASSA ABLOY UK Specification has issued a whitepaper to provide a guide to the specification of doorsets and associated hardware in nurseries, schools and universities. Entitled, ‘Specification considerations for education buildings: doors and ironmongery’ the whitepaper outlines the various relevant standards when specifying doors and ironmongery for education projects, including those relating to accessibility and usability. The paper also covers whole life costing implications and why these considerations are imperative for a successful specification, as well as discusses how architects and contractors within the education sector can contribute to a better built environment by factoring in health and wellbeing influencers. Flexible and future-proofed David Shields, National Specification Manager for ASSA ABLOY UK Specification and the author of the paper said: “In a procurement environment with multiple stakeholders where funding is tightly controlled, education buildings have to be flexible and future-proofed. They need to deliver cost certainty and the highest standards of specification.” “This is why contractors, architects, local education authorities, facilities managers and head teachers are often pulled in very different directions when it comes to product specification for education buildings.” Ironmongery specification “This whitepaper aims to provide clarification, along with practical advice and unique considerations, specifically for doorset and ironmongery specification within education settings.” With a wealth of experience supporting specifications within the education industry, ASSA ABLOY UK Specification work with architects, contractors and end users to ensure the right solution is provided for each individual project, which is then performance guaranteed for up to 20 years. This provides complete peace of mind and can save a school thousands of pounds in replacement and maintenance costs.
ASSA ABLOY UK Specification, a UK division of ASSA ABLOY, a provider of door opening solutions, has assisted with the design and specification of doorsets and relevant hardware for the new Silverstone CE Primary School. Working alongside Northamptonshire County Council, local firm pHp Architects and contractor Lakehouse Construction, the UK Specification team helped deliver the full-scale build of the two-form entry primary school. Products specified included 92 ASSA ABLOY laminate-faced timber doorsets, complete with redwood frames and dark grey PVC edges, making them easy to clean and to help conceal scuffs from daily use. Timber doorsets The colour contrast between the edge of the door and the door surface also helped to achieve an inclusive environment, in line with the latest legislation and guidelines such as Approved Document M of The Building Regulations 2000 and BS8300:2009+A1:2010. The doorsets were complemented by a full ironmongery specification of ASSA 3228 ZP hinges, ASSA ABLOY DC200 Rack & Pinion Door Closers, Union Optimus 3 Locks, UNION J1000 door furniture and ASSA finger guards, which prevent pupils’ fingers from being trapped in closing doors. We have worked on a number of education projects and pride ourselves on tailoring the solutions we provide from our extensive experience in the sector" Masterkey access system The specification also included ASSA’s P600 cylinders for internal and external doors as well as external gates, providing the school with one masterkey system and permitting access to authorised personnel only. Chris Wayman, Associate at pHp Architects commented: “ASSA ABLOY UK Specification not only supplied high quality and fit-for-purpose products, but they also provided a full consultancy service, which took into account factors such as pupil comfort, flow of traffic around the school, as well as the need for staff to access certain areas of the building efficiently and securely. We are delighted with the finished result.” James Bloomfield, Headteacher at Silverstone CE Primary School said: “Working with the UK Specification team was straightforward from start to finish. The doors and ironmongery specified really enhance what is an exceptional building.” David Shields, National Specification Manager at ASSA ABLOY UK Specification, added: “We have worked on a number of education projects and pride ourselves on tailoring the solutions we provide from our extensive experience in the sector.” Risk management “The challenge in all schools is to prioritise safety and minimise the risk of injury, while providing a comfortable learning and teaching environment for both pupils and staff." ASSA ABLOY UK Specification, a UK division of ASSA ABLOY, a provider of door opening solutions, has specified a range of solutions for a new RAF nursery in Oxfordshire, delivering assured access and safety for children using the facility. Working in partnership with designers Frankham Consultancy Group and contractors Antac, the company specified a series of door opening solutions to the new nursery at RAF Benson. The RAF base required an extension to its existing nursery facilities, increasing its capacity to cater for more than 100 children. As a result, the specification process demanded products that were fully compliant and tailored to the needs of the young children that would be using this facility. Products specified by ASSA ABLOY UK Specification include the DC500A CAM-Motion door closer, delivering a low opening force while providing sufficient closing forces to satisfy fire legislation, and ASSA modular high-security deadlocks, delivering a strong locking solution for doors. The doorsets provided are all oak laminate with a horizontal grain, complete with PVC edges—making them easy to clean—and factory-painted frames Ensuring effective children’s safety Other solutions specified include P600 cylinders, patented to ensure keys cannot be duplicated by unauthorised parties, and ScanFlex door furniture, offering classic Scandinavian design in hard-wearing stainless steel. The doorsets provided are all oak laminate with a horizontal grain, complete with PVC edges—making them easy to clean—and factory-painted frames, meaning the products arrive to site in their finished condition, ready for a quick installation. ASSA ABLOY UK Specification also supplied the graphics for the toilet doors in a self-adhesive vinyl. With access and safety for young children of paramount importance, solutions such as ASSA finger guards—protecting children from accidentally trapping their fingers in doors—and thumb turn locks for the toilets, installed at a lower height, were other crucial considerations. Enhanced security with reduced effort Discussing the requirements of this project, Matthew Beech, Associate at Frankham Consultancy Group, explains, “For this kind of environment, the products specified needed to be completely fit for purpose and robust. Young children will be using this facility, and so products need to be built to last and ensure users can move about safely and easily.”While not only reducing the amount of on-site workmanship required, this offering reduced the risk of specifying incorrect ironmongery “A key benefit to working with ASSA ABLOY UK Specification has been the fact they supply factory-fitted ironmongery doorsets. While not only reducing the amount of on-site workmanship required, this offering also means the risk of specifying incorrect ironmongery is significantly reduced. The service we have received from ASSA ABLOY UK Specification has been excellent. The team has been very efficient in following up any queries, ensuring there were no delays to site throughout the whole process.” Doug Swadling, Site Manager from Antac, said, “Specifying and installing ASSA ABLOY’s products could not have been a smoother process. We always received regular contact with the project manager and any questions I had were answered straight away, which was brilliant. The end result is fantastic—the building looks great. We’re so pleased that we managed to deliver a new nursery for RAF Benson with some of the best door solutions available on the market.” Sector-specific security solutions David Shields, Specification Development Manager at ASSA ABLOY UK Specification, adds, “The plans for the build were incredibly multifaceted, but as we have access to such a wide range of products, we were able to adapt and supply a bespoke specification. On a project like this it’s not just about the products but also the added value that the team can provide. Performance guarantees, door scheduling and an understanding of the building’s ongoing use are invaluable.” For those operating in the education sector, ASSA ABLOY UK Specification offers a range of sector-specific solutions, derived from thorough research into product usage and the flow of traffic for specific markets. Other insights, such as BIM objects and whole life costing, ensure the organisation can work with architects and design-led contractors to specify solutions that meet individual requirements and needs.
