Nedap's SENSIT system offers reliable and accurate information for truck parking applications

At the Danish E20 highway, between Odense and Copenhagen, variable message signs have been installed to give truck drivers real-time information about where they can find a safe place to park. Wireless floor mounted sensors accurately detect whether or not a single truck parking bay is occupied and for how long it has been occupied. The smart truck parking system SENSIT from Nedap was deployed last summer. With access to real-time information, truckers can easily find a parking spot when searching for a place to rest, eat, or a place to stay overnight.

The E20 highway route is part of the Scandria corridor, which connects capitals and metropolitan regions along the shortest way from Scandinavia, via Central Europe to the Adriatic Sea. This highway carries some of the highest commercial vehicle volumes on the way to Scandinavia via Copenhagen.

In the interest of safety, truck drivers must adhere to strict travel and rest times. Real-time information about availability of parking spaces on their route increases comfort for them. This solution does not only provide a better service for truckers, it also gives rest area operators the ability to closely monitor parking space utilisation to reduce safety issues.

The new build truck parking Kongsted Nord is the first rest area along this route where every single parking space has been equipped with a wireless vehicle detection sensor. This secure smart parking system monitors the real-time usage of individual parking spaces. Intelligent truck parking information is part of the ambition to solve truck parking problems along Europe’s highways, which the European commission has indicated to be a priority action. SENSIT vehicle detection technology was developed by the Dutch company Nedap.

The system has been deployed after a field test selection procedure. The DRD (Danisch Road Directorate) concluded that Nedap’s SENSIT system contains robust sensor hardware which is offering reliable and accurate information for truck parking applications. The system has been integrated with a system for truck parking guidance through variable message signs (VMS) from the Scandinavian company ATKI.
