VIVOTEK’s total surveillance solutions secure the future of Tungnan University’s students
VIVOTEK’s total surveillance solutions secure the future of Tungnan University’s students

Tungnan University, established in 1970, is an educational institution dedicated to securing bright futures for all of its students. Given the prosperity of industrial development and the demand for industrial technicians at the time of its founding, the school was originally established as a junior college of technology by Mr. Zhi-Ping Jiang. In 2000 the school was promoted to an institute of technology and finally became Tungnan University in 2005. Having undergone great growth, Tungnan University is now composed of four school colleges, including thirteen departments and four graduate schools. The University is located on the hillsides of Shenkeng district, New Taipei City, a location provides a pleasant natural environment for students, faculty and staff, but it also creates its own challenges. Transferring from analogue system Rapid growth sometimes means growing pains, and Tungnan University, now with 7300 students, had outgrown its old analogue surveillance system. Given that the old system no longer functioned stably and failed to provide clear images, the school decided to find a new solution, one that could protect Tungnan University students in any weather, at any time. Keeping track, and ensuring the safety, of staff and students in an expanded campus will always present a challenge for security systems. However, as the campus was built into the hillside, and lightening occasionally caused power outages, as well damaged school facilities and equipment, the new system didn’t just need to be smart, it needed to be tough. In addition, the large area covered by the campus meant that any system needed the ability to cover many spaces though one intuitive control system. Tungnan management had decided that an independent campus security centre would be established, in order to take charge of the security of the whole school, and guarantee the safety of over 7300 students. Tungnan University got in touch with the experts at Apogear distributers, who looked at the list of requirements and set to work planning the perfect system. Total coverage and total protection Apogear knew that there was only one surveillance solution provider able to not just meet, but exceed Tungnan University’s expectations - VIVOTEK. Together, Tungnan University, Apogear and VIVOTEK set about planning a system that would watch over and protect the university’s students. Given the broad expanses of Tungnan University’s campus, 135 network cameras were installed across a variety of spaces to ensure total coverage and total protection. For outdoor spaces and underground parking lots, 66 IP8364-C bullet network cameras provided night and day, all weather surveillance. Equipped with a 2MP sensor enabling viewing resolution of 1920x1080 at a smooth 30 fps, the IP8364-C is an all-in-one outdoor camera capable of capturing high quality and high resolution video up to 2 Megapixels. In order to adapt to the constantly changing outdoor lighting conditions of Tungnan University’s hillside location, the IP8364-C features a removable IR-cut filter as well as IR illuminators effective up to 20M for superior image quality around the clock. And for protection against the harsh mountain weather, the camera is encased in an IP66-rated housing and weather-proof casing to withstand rain and dust. Together, Tungnan University, Apogear and VIVOTEK set about planning a system that would watch over and protect the university’s students Day and night security For tops of buildings, corridors, and stairways, Apogear and VIVOTEK recruited the IP8362 bullet network camera for its 2MP resolution, WDR, Focus Assist, and built tough IP67 rated housing. The IP8362 is a best-in-class 1080p outdoor bullet network camera designed for diverse outdoor applications. With full HD resolution and WDR enhancement, users can identify image details in extremely bright as well as dark environments. Now Tungnan University’s changeable weather would no longer challenge the University’s surveillance system – not matter how bright, or how dim, students could feel safe anywhere on campus. A further 20 IP8332-C bullet network cameras provided day and night protection of corridors and stairs with their built in IR illuminators effective up to 15 meters, and removable IR cut filter for day and night function. Finally, rounding out this great class of VIVOTEK cameras, 6 FD8134 fixed dome network cameras provided 350-degree pan range and 70 degree range coverage of elevators. The FD8134 supports the industry-standard H.264 compression technology, drastically reducing file sizes and conserving valuable network bandwidth, meaning savings on storage and allowing more money to be spent on the education of Tungnan’s talented students. Safest Possible Educational Environment Finally, tying the entire system together are 9 ND8401 network video recorders. United by VAST, VIVOTEK’s state of the art video management software, these network video recorders are 16-CH network video recorders designed for sophisticated recording applications. Each unit is equipped with an Intel Dual-core Atom Processor with maximum recording throughput at a robust 96 Mbps. RAID 0/1/5/10 is supported with four HDDs, with an external eSATA port for additional expansion. Further, with VAST integrating all 9 network recorders and all 135 IP network cameras, Tungnan University security staff are able to use free, and intuitive functions to watch over the students via a video wall solution, VAST Matrix, which allows for the live viewing of hundreds of cameras. Now, as it has been doing since 1970, Tungnan University can concentrate on providing its young students with the brightest possible future, secure in the knowledge that VIVOTEK is ensuring the safest possible educational environment.

VIVOTEK’s IP-based surveillance solutions help build safer learning environment at Sanyu Elementary School in Taipei
VIVOTEK’s IP-based surveillance solutions help build safer learning environment at Sanyu Elementary School in Taipei

Over 48 VIVOTEK network cameras have been installed in hallways, stairways, and around sports grounds at the school A safer campus where children can learn and grow Schools are places for students to learn and acquire professional and social skills. For children and young adults, school is also a place that shapes their personality, integrity and self-respect. However, schools often double as public places that are open to communities, making the safety and security on campus exceptionally important. Issues that may compromise campus security are diverse, ranging from trespassing and theft, to bullying, vandalism and injury. School-aged children are vulnerable and lack awareness when it comes to confronting danger. Thus, an integrated security mechanism with advanced and seamless surveillance should be installed on campus, securing a safe learning environment for children. With an advanced surveillance system, school staff can perform security networking right on campus, and police or security can do so remotely. If a suspicious person or object is detected, the alarm will trigger, mobilising real-time assistance. Early detection of a dangerous situation on campus significantly increases the likelihood of prevention. Enhanced infrastructure, strengthened security Sanyu Elementary School, located in the Tienmu area of Shihlin District, Taipei, Taiwan was founded in 1993. With a strong commitment to education, Sanyu Elementary School has executed a series of initiatives for building up a safe campus for its 1,500 students from grades 1 to 6. The school prioritises healthy development and quality education, which can be seen in various academic courses, dynamic and multifaceted extracurricular activities, vigorous physical education programs and events, and a comprehensive tutorial system. However, solid security is needed for all these initiatives to operate smoothly, and to ensure parents that their children are learning in a safe environment. Sanyu Elementary School has put lots of effort and resources into security infrastructure enhancement and renovation. The surveillance system, as the pivotal mechanism for security on campus, also got an overhaul. After seeing the insufficient image quality of the existing analogue cameras, the school decided to upgrade to an IP-based surveillance system. With VIVOTEK’s local distributor Zero One Technology’s professional advice and support, 48 VIVOTEK network cameras were chosen for the project. The two major reasons that Sanyu Elementary School go with VIVOTEK were: First, VIVOTEK is a leading brand in Taiwan. Second, VIVOTEK provides quality solutions, which have been also well recognised by other schools. Unparalleled visibility, seamless monitoring 48 network cameras have been installed in hallways, stairways, and around sports grounds, creating a seamless shield of protection for children wherever they are on campus. Hallways and stairways, which are semi-outdoor areas, are places with high contrast lighting conditions. Capturing fine details while maintaining superb image quality can be challenging under such circumstances, only cameras with excellent image processing capability are adequate. VIVOTEK’s IP8332-C, a 1MP bullet-style network camera, features a removable IR-cut filter and IR illuminators, effective up to 15M. This camera captures video with exceptional image quality and resolution around the clock. As for harsh outdoor environments, the IP8332-C is encased in weather-proof casing to withstand rain and dust, ensuring stable operation and monitoring under any weather condition. The IP8332-C is also an ideal option for monitoring hallways and stairways VIVOTEK’s IP8332-C 1MP bullet-style network camera monitors hallways and stairways Apart from the indoors, children have physical education classes and play around outside on the sports grounds. However, monitoring this area can be challenging considering the openness of the premises. VIVOTEK’s speed dome network camera SD8312E, with its sophisticated pan/tilt mechanism, was installed for sports ground surveillance. The SD8312E is capable of fast, precise movements with continuous 360-degree pan and 90-degree tilt. Designed with WDR Pro technology and a removable IR-cut filter, the camera is able to deliver unparalleled visibility day and night, clearly capturing every move on the ground. VIVOTEK’s IP8130, a 1MP small-sized and elegant designed cube network camera, was installed in the security office at the school entrance. Any activity around the security office, such as intrusion or vandalism, can be monitored, protecting not only the security guard staff, but also school children. With a supporting smart phone application, VIVOTEK’s iViewer, security guards can access live video off-site in real time through iPhone or Android platforms. VIVOTEK is the best choice for cementing campus security Kelly Huang, Director of General Affairs at Sanyu Elementary School stated: “Ever since the establishment of Sanyu Elementary School 20 years ago, our top priorities have been the children’s safety, positive growth and excellent scholarship. The school has put great effort into making the environment safer and friendlier. After VIVOTEK’s cameras were installed, our surveillance quality improved significantly. The clarity and fine details in the footage delivered by VIVOTEK network cameras have exceeded our expectation. We are convinced that VIVOTEK is the best choice for campus security.” William Ku, Vice President of VIVOTEK’s International Business Division, stated: “Campus safety always needs to be stressed. Providing our children with a safe and enjoyable learning space ensures sound development. In recent years there have been several devastating attacks on schools around the world. There have been heartbreaking tragedies and innocent children have suffered, there have been incidents in the U.S, China and South America. Sometimes attacks are unpredictable, but precautionary measures, like a comprehensive security mechanism with advanced surveillance capacity, can minimise the possibility of tragedies and irreversible loss.”
