J2K installs megapixel IP cameras at Scan Computers, making it the world’s largest application of its kind
J2K installs megapixel IP cameras at Scan Computers, making it the world’s largest application of its kind

The SharpView System consists of 60 IP cameras from JVC and Arecont VisionEurope's leading high technology PC components distributor, Scan Computers International have installed the world's largest multi-megapixel CCTV system based on SharpView.Replacing an old 30 camera analogue system that had an 80GB time lapse DVR, J2K Video designed the SharpView System to cover all areas at Scan's premises in Lancashire which includes offices, customer showroom, perimeter car parks, goods entrances and exits and the extensive warehousing of high-end computer components. The SharpView System consists of 60 IP cameras from JVC and Arecont Vision with a range of pixel resolutions from D1 through to 2592 x 1944. Using only the highest quality Computar 1/2-inch megapixel lenses from CBC, the resulting video is outstanding and as a result, the system has drastically improved security at the high technology distributor's site and plays a key role in reducing shrinkage on site, resolving disputes and providing local Police with the best video evidence they have ever seen.J2K Video designed the system with specific attention to the operational requirements of the business. Higher resolution cameras are fitted to capture greater detail of external areas, movement of goods in and out of the building and customer areas. JVC's VN-V25 cameras have been installed in key areas to capture high speed, real-time videoLower resolution, higher speed cameras have been deployed in areas where internal operations warrant a need for better motion sensing and video capture.Externally Arecont Vision's AV5100DN and AV3100DN housed in Ganz GH-230 IP67-rated enclosures have been installed with IR lamps from Raytec which provide excellent recordings in the SharpView NVRs throughout the day and night. Internally JVC's VN-V25 cameras have been installed in key areas to capture high speed, real-time video where the ultimate in reliability is required. Internal cameras also include models from across the Arecont Vision range including AV1300M, AV2100M, AV3100M and AV5100M. The use of fixed focal length megapixel lenses from CBC ensures that the optimum picture quality is achieved, particularly for wider views of goods storage areas in the main warehouse.Three SharpView Network Video Recorders, each with 12TB of RAID-1 fault tolerant recording have been built by Scan's own engineering team using high performance Intel servers. These are networked with all cameras and several Quad-Core client PCs (from Scan's own 3XS range) using ZyXEL 24-port PoE switches. At over 400Mbps of actual recording rate, the throughput of data to each SharpView NVR is believed to be the highest in the industry. The extrapolated system write speed of 2,400Mbps is by far the fastest recording performance in the industry and therefore allows Scan to add more cameras as ample capacity and bandwidth are available to them in the existing SharpView NVRs.With 36TB of RAID-1 storage and 60 multi-megapixel cameras recording at over 400Mbps, this implementation of SharpView is the largest and highest performance megapixel CCTV system on a single site anywhere in the world.

Videotec's sea-tested IP monitoring video system captures Sardinian archipelago
Videotec's sea-tested IP monitoring video system captures Sardinian archipelago

Location The Maddalena archipelago is a group of islands north-east of Sardinia, off the Emerald Coast, a popular destination for pleasure sailors for its natural beauty and unspoiled emerald waters. Established in 1996, the National Park is strictly protected by environmental heritage laws. The archipelago is famous for the amazing rock carved by the wind. La Maddalena is the main island. The ambitious total IP video system aims to protect the marine and coastal environment of La Maddalena, characterised by its charming locations. The video system distinguishes itself with the singularity of the challenges it has faced and its relevance to current issues at stake. Mission The Ministry of Transport and Harbour Office requested action on two different fronts: video surveillance of a vast area that includes sea, houses, wharves and surrounding docks plus the monitoring of maritime traffic in the park area. In the first case, the tender's specifications required an IP video system, installed on the La Maddalena island, consisting of a control room located in the ancient tower in the Guardia Vecchia suburb, and a remote system installed at Punta Chiara. To control the traffic on sea areas which are not visible from the island, it was essential to install mobile IP cameras in various spots. Solution Rome-based security distribution company Italtec and the Make Security installation company were called up to design and build the system using Panasonic and Videotec products, while the software was developed by the Milan company Essai. The technologies used are all cutting edge latest generation and the works were completed in full compliance with all applicable standards and regulations. Since the natural location is so impervious, a considerable number of difficulties were encountered in the implementation phase, such as the transportation of site equipment and the lack of electricity, a problem resolved by using photovoltaic panels, capable of guaranteeing a week of independent power even without the sun. This service was ensured by using low consumption products only, along with Videotec pan-tilt systems which have zero consumption levels when inactive. The video system installed on the La Maddalena island is composed of two network video recorders and about a dozen Panasonic video cameras.   Part of Videotec's IP monitoring system on duty in Sardinia Videotec IP68 stainless steel housings and pan-tilt systems were installed to protect and handle the cameras; the latter are made from polished stainless steel designed to withstand the most severe environments and developed specifically for the offshore market, industrial use and any type of environment where external agents are highly corrosive and aggressive as at sea. Furthermore, the accurate mechanical construction and reliable motors reduce the need for maintenance even in situations of intense mechanical stress. This is an essential condition in sites which are difficult to reach, like the Maddalena archipelago. Moreover, these devices are equipped with wipers to ensure clear viewing in all weather conditions. Given the need for accurate sea patrol systems, the pan-tilt systems were equipped with "two-way telemetry," an ad hoc application developed by Italtec which displays not only the video recording on the monitor but also the geographic reference coordinates. Results  Only a few months have passed since the work was completed but it is already possible to draw a positive balance. There is not a small stretch of coastline or a portion of sea that escapes the widespread patrol systems which are capable of transmitting images that are so clear and precise that it is possible to read the license plate of a ship two miles away. The anomalous events detected by the system so far have mainly referred to distress calls by boats in difficulty. In such cases, the accuracy of the shots is so high that the operator was able to aim the camera exactly in the direction where the call was being made and watch what was actually happening. However, illegal situations that may occur are numerous: from encroachment by ships to the passage of oil tankers discharging pollutants into the environment. The example set by La Maddalena may serve to convince other marine parks to adopt the same tools and technologies. Further info: http://www.videotec.com/
