Established in 2009, the Port of Taipei is an important transport hub for cargo traffic between Europe and Asia. A designated free-trade zone, the port is becoming an important East Asian trans-shipmentcentre. To better serve the importers and exporters who utilise its facilities, the port offers automated loading and unloading of container vessels and also provides trading services. Despite the global economic downturn, the Port of Taipei's trading business sales have grown rapidly on a year-on-year basis. The Port of Taipei adds additional value to port operations by conscientiously managing the safety needs of commercial shipping. The port loads and unloads up to 10 million tons of cargo on a yearly basis, and daily volumes are quite high. Surveillance is crucial to prevent theft and ensure the safety of the goods moving through the port. The Port of Taipei chose MESSOA's SCR515 camera to monitor goods passing via the main gate The port has therefore installed cameras at the entrance gate to recognise and record the plates of all entering trucks and visitors. The Port of Taipei chose a MESSOA camera, the SCR515, as the principal link in its security fence, using it to monitor and protect the import and export goods transported via the main gate.    Situated on the south side of the Tamshui River estuary at the foot of Kuanyin Mountain, the Port of Taipei looks westward to the Taiwan Strait and into the teeth of the strong northeastern monsoon and year-round winds. The coastal weather conditions-strong winds, frequent wind-driven rain, windblown salt, and intense heat and humidity-are serious concerns. One of the greatest challenges to the port's surveillance operations is the huge volume of windblown sand, which blurs lenses and otherwise degrades the captured images used for identification. The Port of Taipei employs MESSOA's dust protection cylinder to protect the lenses of its cameras and ensure the quality of images used for recognition. These unique dustproof enclosures protect lenses against blurring, keeping them clear and capable of capturing detailed images at all times. The SCR515's IP66/IP67-rated die-casting aluminium housing also protects the camera from the salt damage and strong rains common in coastal settings. The housing is very tolerant of temperature and humidity changes, functioning well in -30ºC-50ºC temperatures and 30-90% relative humidities, both of which are common in costal environments.
