Rapid expansion of access control into new roles has been fuelled by panel-less architecture Our world has changed and our industry has changed with it. Data now rules, and the network is king. The Internet of Things has driven customer expectations in how data is received and can be acted upon. Advances in panel-less pure IP technologies have allowed our customers to redefine the applications of access control. These two colliding forces have put us all in the business of managing access points and delivering real-time data… any access point, with new types of data. Traditionally, access control solutions have always been restricted to securing entry and exit points as well as securing access against unauthorised entries. We, as leaders, can no longer think in “doors”. Innovation in access control technology Technology leaders and analysts agree there will be over 25 billion connected devices in use by 2020, creating a $4 trillion revenue opportunity. In access control this now means that we must use open platforms to share information at a rate that we have never experienced. Hospitals, farms, ambulances, warehousing, mining, and manufacturing all have needs to control relays to improve efficiency, safety and security. Access control is being expanded from doors to cabinets, heavy machinery, vehicles, and production lines. Farms are using traditional access control technologies to solve problems from feed distribution to fuel pump access. Access control is becoming a tool to solve problems that were not traditionally in our domain. The benefits of a distributed Pure IP,panel-less, architecture combinedwith the desire for control, operational efficiency, and safety aredriving us all to think about accesscontrol as more than “doors” Rapid expansion of access control into these new roles has been fuelled by panel-less architecture. IP enabled access control systems have been reduced to a single reader-controller device that has the capability of panel systems in a centrally managed, fully distributed architecture. Constant power can be provided via Power over Ethernet delivering as much as 600 mA for locks and other devices. Local decision keeps the access control network running, even if the network goes down. These advances result in faster install, greater scalability, and a less expensive overall proposition. Healthcare applications and beyond The benefits of a distributed Pure IP, panel-less, architecture combined with the desire for control, operational efficiency, and safety are driving us all to think about access control as more than “doors”. A prime example of this new way of thinking about access control includes the way it is now being used in the healthcare industry. With the help of Carstens, Inc, the industry’s leading provider of wall-mounted workstations, authorised users can now open locked cabinets and other access points throughout a healthcare facility with a single swipe of their card. This powerful healthcare solution is revolutionising the industry. The WALLAroo,® Carstens’s new wall-mounted workstations are available with the advanced security of Pure IP access control technology. The simple topology of a single reader-controller device powered by a standard category 5 cable makes this solution viable. This technology can be found on medical cabinets and mobile carts throughout a myriad of healthcare facilities and helps to better secure medication distribution, critical supply storage and patient data and prevent any mishandling or unauthorised access. Adapting to growing needs The clarity of Charles Darwin applies to us all when he said, “It is not the strongest of the species that survives but the most adaptable.” Each of us need to challenge ourselves to augment our historical product lines and way of thinking to seize new opportunity for our businesses. Providing customers the choice for Pure IP access control or the traditional solution allows your business to evolve as IP technology continues to the edge. As we move forward into 2016, the saying it’s not just about doors will continue to become reality. As technology continues to evolve, so will the applications of access control. From securing remote sites to medical cabinets even underground mines, the gateway to possibilities is endless and will continue to grow for years to come.

Lincoln Fire & Rescue (LF&R) in Lincoln, Nebraska offers an all hazards emergency response service including fire and emergency medical services with professional personnel on staff. Each member is sworn to protect the lives and property of all Lincoln city residents. The fire department promotes life safety through public education, fire suppression, emergency medical services, and hazardous materials, and by developing and enforcing ordinances and fire codes. Currently, the fire department is comprised of 232 firefighters, 60 captains, and 10 chief officers within 17 buildings servicing 272,996 residents of Lincoln, Nebraska and surrounding areas. With life safety as the mission of Lincoln Fire & Rescue, ensuring timely and efficient rescues and firefighting is imperative and requires quick access to buildings. Nearly 5,000 fire departments nationwide use the Knox-Box® system including L F & R for afterhours building access to investigate the possibility of a fire. The Knox-Box® system provides a secure, rapid entry after-hours solution specifically developed for fire departments. The system consists of hardened steel boxes installed on the exterior of a building near the entrance that business owners use to store entrance keys, access cards and floor plans. A single master key is controlled by the local fire department, making it vital that these boxes are heavily protected, and access to these keys is secured and restricted. Department personnel developed a mobile application using the ISONAS system to secure this single master Knox Box key on specific apparatus. The main challenges Lincoln Fire & Rescue needed to secure all 17 facilities within the department from unauthorised visitors and prevent access to costly medical equipment, oxygen tanks, uniforms, and other expensive fire equipment. Specifically, LF&R wanted to secure facilities that contained multiple access points covering a large geographic area and find a solution that could expand with them as they grew. New fire houses built in the department would need to be seamlessly added to the main access control system; which posed another challenge. Most importantly, LF&R needed to keep their fire trucks safe and inaccessible and needed to safeguard the on-site master keys associated with the Knox Box system for numerous businesses in the community. The solution Lincoln Fire & Rescue had previously worked with Cable Guyz Communications, Inc., a local systems integrator that provided systems and services for a variety of network based products, including computer networks, phone systems and access control. Initially, the integrator was contracted to help the fire department with their computer networking and cabling needs. Cable Guyz had established themselves as a reputable vendor for systems integration for the City of Lincoln and was chosen by LF&R to maintain and upgrade the department’s ISONAS Pure IP access control system. Cable Guyz handled the work very professionally. Their flexibility to work around fire trucks coming in and out of the garage and running wire through the high ceilings was sincerely appreciated and they were able to meet multiple deadlines with no delays. ISONAS was the clear choice for access control and worked within the department’s budget to deliver a custom designed solution that was second to none. “We chose the ISONAS Pure IP access control solution for a myriad of reasons,” states Patrick Borer, Assistant Chief at Lincoln Fire & Rescue. “The fire department was looking for a cost-effective, reliable solution that was capable of providing audits and reports while being web accessible. It was important for us to figure out which access points should be card access controlled and which doors should be locked. ISONAS and Cable Guyz were with us every step of the way in the decision making process and helped us make this project a huge success.” "The application of our Pure IPtechnology on the fire trucksdemonstrates that access controlis about more than doors and isflexible and scalable to meetmany customer needs" A total of 34 ISONAS PowerNet™ Reader-Controllers were installed throughout the department’s 17 facilities, and four additional readers were installed using wireless technology on the fire trucks. The ISONAS system was used with a vehicle inverter and modem to create a mobile security solution for the district’s Knox Box keys. The ISONAS card reader stores all of the entries remotely, and the ISONAS DB Crystal Windows-based software allows the fire district to monitor all access points in real-time and access reports for all activity throughout the facilities and fire trucks. “We are extremely proud of our work with Lincoln Fire & Rescue and helping to create a safer environment for the department with our Pure IP access control solution,” states Rob Mossman, CEO of ISONAS. “The application of our Pure IP technology on the fire trucks demonstrates that access control is about more than doors and is flexible and scalable to meet many customer needs.” The district chose to install card readers at the main employee entrance in each facility and issue all employees, interns, and vendors an ID card with the capability of being read by ISONAS card readers. The flexibility of the ISONAS system allowed L F & R to schedule multiple doors to be locked and only provide access with a card swipe. Set schedules allow all other facility access points to remain locked at all times as staff members have to leave the premises quickly in an emergency and do not have time to secure doors upon exiting. The importance of securing all access points The ISONAS Pure IP access control system offered numerous advantages to Lincoln Fire & Rescue. Previously, the staff felt apprehensive about leaving behind costly fire equipment and protective apparel without a security system in place, now they have peace of mind. Also, due to department budget limitations, LF&R needed to find a cost-effective, reliable solution quickly. The ISONAS solution was the perfect choice providing an affordable system due to the fact that it is easier to install and operate and provides flexibility and scalability that meet an immediate need as well as future expansion demands. The ISONAS Pure IP access control system eliminates the need for a panel and only requires our all in one PowerNet™ Reader-Controller and a category 5 cable to provide power and a network connection; creating intelligent access control at the edge. The Fire District’s future plans Lincoln Fire & Rescue is in a booming city that will continue to see significant growth in the future. In order to keep up with the growth, the department plans to build five new facilities within the next three years; two of which will be new facilities and three will replace older, existing facilities. While this is in progress, the department has identified the location of the next three fire stations that will open in the next few years. Being prepared is important to L F & R; whether it is an emergency situation or keeping up with the security of a growing department – the department is ready for anything that comes their way with the scalability of the ISONAS solution at their doors.

Since 1898, Provo City School District (PCSD) has been providing quality education that has been fundamental in preparing students for their future success. Located in Provo, Utah, about 43 miles south of Salt Lake City, PCSD is one of 41 public school districts in the state and serves approximately 14,200 students. The district operates traditional high schools, middle schools and elementary schools, as well as an alternative high school and a web-based school that serves all grade levels. PCSD is recognised as one of the 5 largest school districts in the greater Salt Lake City area and has built a reputation as being one of the best in Utah by offering such enrichment programs as advanced placement (AP), special education, music, career technology, elementary dual language, multi-cultural, gifted and talented, and many others in curriculum areas. With classrooms, labs and offices occupying space in 23 buildings, securing all facilities and grade levels continues to be a main priority and a significant challenge for PCSD. Over the years, the district invested in video surveillance, installing over 1000 cameras throughout the various buildings. The installation of an enterprise-level VMS (Video Management System) provides an easy to use and feature rich command centre for the 1000’s of cameras across campus. By working with ISONAS, the school was able to have a completely integrated solution that helps eliminate incidents district wide. PCSD: Security challenges One of the biggest security challenges for the district was knowing who was in which of the 23 buildings at any given time. With multiple keys disbursed to administrators and staff members, it was difficult to track individual keys when someone transferred to another building or left the district. Without having an access control system in place, it was possible that duplicate keys could be made granting access to non-employees creating a security risk that was near impossible to control. With 126 doors to secure across the district, administrators at PCSD knew they needed to work quickly to correct the problem before an incident occurred. Another huge challenge of this installation was the timeframe in which the job had to be completed. The school received a federal grant for improving their security measures, however it came with tight time constraints. The money had to be used within the year, which left limited time for the school to exercise due diligence and find the right vendors to complete the security upgrade. Working at the speed of light With the clock ticking, the job went out to bid, and Beacon Metals, a local company specialising in door security, won the project along with ISONAS, a Colorado based Pure IP Access Control manufacturer. The project commenced in February 2015 with the access control installation portion beginning in June 2015. ISONAS and Beacon Metals understood that the job had to be completed quickly, and there was no time to spare. “ISONAS worked around the clock with Beacon Metals to ensure that all doors were secured with our PowerNet™ IP Reader-Controllers within the tight time constraints. We are happy to help the Provo school district open the door to the new school year with confidence,” states Rob Mossman, CEO at ISONAS. Over 120 doors needed to be secured within a two and a half month time span, with the goal to have everything installed and operational when the students and staff returned to school in September. On average the project consisted of securing 4 doors per day until the job was completed which is a key benefit of the ISONAS solution; a simpler and easier product leads to a faster installation timeline. "With the ISONAS Pure IP access control solution, it’s all centrally managed from one location and we were able to use our existing network infrastructure", states Jonathan Smith, Network Engineer at Provo ISONAS: The right security solution ISONAS’s network-based PowerNet™ IP Reader-Controller offers a patented technology that easily integrates with Windows-based software to deliver more simplicity, greater value, and total flexibility. ISONAS offers the industry’s first panel-free IP reader controller which delivers pure IP technology to the door because the only equipment needed is a PowerNet™ Reader Controller and a standard category 5 cable to each door. This technology provides the freedom to secure an unlimited number of doors without the hassle of having to run coaxial cabling, hiring an electrician or cutting into drywall. Working closely with the administrators and network engineers at PCSD allowed ISONAS to recommend the right solution for each building. In addition, to the PowerNet™ IP readers, PCSD is using the ISONAS DBCrystal Matrix software from a centralised location to manage all 23 buildings. With the responsive design administrators have the ability to “lock down” the buildings from their access control system. The Provo City School District made the right choice with ISONAS to help keep complications to a minimum and implement a seamless access control system that integrated with their current infrastructure. The result “We chose ISONAS because we didn’t want to have to run proprietary cables everywhere and manage 23 separate locations. With the ISONAS Pure IP access control solution, it’s all centrally managed from one location and we were able to use our existing network infrastructure. We already had PoE (Power over Ethernet) switches and the cabling ready, which made it a smart decision for us to go with ISONAS,” states Jonathan Smith, Network Engineer at Provo City School District. Future Plans for Provo City School District The Provo City School District has a bright future ahead and is already in the process of planning the construction of five new buildings scheduled to open within the next two years, which will consist of additional doors that need to be secured. With the ease of installation and scalability of the system, adding 30-40 doors to the system will be an easy job for the district. The ISONAS Pure IP Access Control Solution gets an A+ in creating a system that is flexible in meeting the changing needs of the PCSD now and in the future.
