In 1981, the city of Calgary in Alberta, Canada opened the first leg of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) line for the city’s visitors and residents. Today, the LRT has more than doubled the number of stations, added two additional legs, and boasts around 95 million passengers per year. The system is now commonly referred to as the “CTrain” and includes 38 stations connecting 46 km of track. The three legs operate on 7th Avenue through the city’s downtown area, and the resulting ten-station stretch in this high-density area is a Free Fare Zone that reduces transportation congestion in the heart of the city. The business challenge When the CTrain system was first built, a CCTV system was installed comprising a matrix of analog cameras transmitting analog video to tapes, and eventually DVRs, which processed and archived the footage. In addition to being technologically outdated and providing a limited user interface, Calgary recently determined the system to be at end-of-life, and concerns of system failure caused key decision makers to seek a new solution. There are inherent challenges to monitoring and providing safe passage to CTrain's customers. A transit environment is necessarily fast-paced and must aim to ensure security without hindering a timely travel experience. In addition, the disparate location of various stations requires a system that can efficiently pipe data to a single position to enable effective monitoring and evaluation of the CTrain system as a whole. End-user needs In searching for a suitable replacement for the CTrain's video surveillance system, several qualities were paramount. Calgary needed an open-platform system to maximise flexibility under strict procurement models, as well as a mature and proven piece of software that could easily integrate with their large monitor wall and run across multiple work stations. The CTrain also required a multitude of software configuration options and the ability to easily scale the system as needed based on the addition of new transit stations to the CTrain's constantly growing lines. An IP solution was deemed most suitable, providing reduced infrastructure costs for a system that would be spread across a number of physical locations (i.e., stations), as well as increased system security. An added benefit would be the creation of a robust network. This would not only house the security platform, but also facilitate an evolution in the transit organisation. The network would provide a technologically advanced backbone on which all aspects of the CTrain's management could rely and interplay smoothly. Calgary issued an RFP (request for proposal) to learn about the options available. After evaluating Calgary's needs and the difficulties faced in a transit environment, Contava, a Genetec Unified Elite security integrator, submitted a bid based on Genetec's Omnicast video surveillance platform. Following careful evaluations, Calgary selected Contava to design and implement their new security solution. The perfect solution  Once the project was approved, the CTrain's Omnicast system was designed, the stations were retrofitted and cameras were installed all inside of nine months. "Given the solution delivered in this short timeline, this has to be the most successful security project of all time," remarked David Sime, Director of Operations at Contava. Omnicast was installed as a stand-alone video surveillance system within the Security Center, Genetec's unified security platform to provide a seamless user interface with maximum expansion options, including potential for access control in the future. Omnicast installed as a stand-alone video surveillance system within the Security Center The CTrain system employs 471 Panasonic megapixel WV-NW502S cameras with vandal-proof domes, which are capable of H.264 recording. An additional 23 Panasonic WV-NW964 outdoor-rated PTZ (pan tilt zoom) cameras round out the arsenal. Panasonic WJ-GXE500 IP encoders with H.264 compression capabilities are used where needed, allowing Calgary to save funds by making use of existing analog cameras leftover from the previous solution. The system is hosted on Dell R510 and R410 servers, which allow for distributed archiving throughout the stations, and feature a significant amount of recording capacity - 30 FPS (frames per second) for 30 days for the whole network. In addition, the downtown City Hall Information Technology Data Center houses centralised failover archiving of video and redundant directories, and the core network layer itself is redundant and configured in a multiple ring architecture. While the CTrain is open for business, three operators monitor the system's vast collection of camera feeds in real-time from a centralised location that features a two by nine array of 46-inch bezel-less Mitsubishi VS-L46SM70U LCD monitors. System data can also be accessed from the OCC (Operations Control Centre) in Calgary's public safety office to track operators, and law enforcement can use this facility to request surveillance data for investigations. The system also has the capacity to provide offsite video access to law enforcement for increased response time, and privacy impact assessments are being conducted to investigate viability of this option. Citrix access is set up to allow remote maintenance of the system. "One of the major advantages of choosing Omnicast is its flexibility," said Colin Adderley, Project Manager and Engineer at the City of Calgary for the CCTV system. "The flexibility in architectural design of the system has allowed us to minimise single points of failure along all portions of the system. And the open architecture allows us to use our 'flavour of the day' cameras to accommodate vendor competition through different product life cycles. Plus, the whole system is cheaper on a per-camera basis so we can maximise our coverage with allocated funds." The Omnicast platform integrates with a number of other systems to streamline the CTrain's operations. Active Directory is integrated to efficiently manage administration and organisation of user profiles; SNMP (simple network management protocol) monitoring is also enabled, to provide an extra layer of reliability by alerting both operators and Contava if any network connected device experiences a fault or performance issue. Most importantly, Omnicast has been integrated with the CTrain's SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) system. The SCADA system controls operator interaction with various events, often mechanical, including movement of elevators and escalators, and response to station help phones. Integrating with Omnicast means that the SCADA system will drive alerts or requests via a serial to digital interface to the videowall and operator. Omnicast will also respond to the SCADA system confirming video alerts have been received, and allowing the operator to remotely control systems via SCADA. This process is required by policy for civilian safety prior to allowing action, for example, movement of an elevator. Selecting Omnicast for their video surveillance needs has provided Calgary's CTrain with numerous advantages over their previous system. "It's like apples and oranges comparing this solution to the old system - you could say all of the features are new to the LRT," said Mr. Sime. Since training has been completed, the platform's overall usability has proven priceless in assisting the three operators with managing such a large system, which is used primarily to monitor public access to the space in real-time, as well as documenting post-incident investigations when necessary. "The flexibility in architectural design of the system has allowed us to minimise single points of failure along all portions of the system" The map interface also allows operators to quickly and easily identify where cameras are located, without cross-referencing a complicated and voluminous data sheet. Video analytics have also been integrated with the system, enabling automatic alarming to aid in monitoring such a large volume of feeds and to fine tune usage of the High-Definition video streams. Additional analytics, such as unauthorized access alarms, are under consideration for future deployment. The benefits Since transitioning from the static and non-responsive analogue system, the CTrain has been able to find strategy" in just about every direction, which is a luxury we did not have before," says Mr. Adderley. "This, plus configurability and flexibility of the system, has transformed our processes for the better, from hardware procurement to consolidation to granular permissions configuration to performance measurements." There has been extremely positive feedback to the high-quality of the images recorded by the system, as well as the ease of information retrieval. This has allowed images to be employed for operational observations, such as train arrival times or evaluating whether interlocks are working. Auxiliary strategies aside, however, the biggest win for the CTrain's new system is the improved security it has provided. Increased image resolution has been integral in assisting with the identification of individuals who have committed crimes, and the highly navigable system allows the images to be served up to law enforcement in no time. A platform that yields this type of reliability, certainty and response time is priceless to an organisation like Calgary's transit system. It provides a sense of security to the public who see the effects of an immediately responsive system and have confidence that the organization is equipped to do its utmost to keep them safe. "We have seen large-scale Genetec deployments prove successful in bustling international airports and massive shopping malls, ensuring that the platform is proven and can scale well. Moreover, in our opinion, Genetec delivers this platform using the best interface for operators to view and manage live and recorded video," said Mr. Sime. "These two factors - scalability for enterprise architecture and usability - combine to create a system that is not only perfectly fit for transit deployments, but is also simply the strongest video management platform available right now."

Security for banks can be a real challenge when faced with a multitude of threats including: fraud, theft and physical attacks. One bank which is setting new standards in the Middle East, when it comes to the application of surveillance technology to keep its infrastructure, staff and customers safe and secure, is National Bank of Kuwait (NBK). This is thanks to the roll out of an advanced NetVu Connected CCTV solution from Dedicated Micros part of AD Group which is focused on the centralised monitoring of all of its branches and critical ATM infrastructure.Awarded the Best Bank in the Middle East 2010 accolade by EuroMoney, National Bank of Kuwait (NBK), which was incorporated in 1952 as the first indigenous bank in the entire Gulf region, remains the preeminent banking institution in Kuwait as well as being an established banking franchise across the Middle East and supporting a large branch network, spanning 17 countries, including many of the world's financial and business centres.Dedicated Micros connection with National Bank of Kuwait stretches back over four years. The catalyst for the surveillance specialist being brought on board for this ambitious ATM protection project was the bank's dissatisfaction with the CCTV solutions it tested from other providers. A spokesperson for the Engineering Services Division, NBK, takes up the story: "We looked at and tested several brands of DVRs as potential answers to our pressing ATM surveillance needs before deciding to go ultimately with Dedicated Micros. The solutions that fell by the wayside were simply too cumbersome and complicated in terms of all the extra equipment (and software licenses) that would have been required to activate the functionality we wanted. This was in stark contrast to Dedicated Micros which was able to meet our needs based around an effective hardware-based package." Said Salim Idris, General Manager (Middle East), Dedicated Micros: "When contacted by NBK we were delighted to assist Kuwait's foremost banking establishment, not only were we able to demonstrate that we had the solutions available, such as the DV-IP ATM, that could address their specific requirements head-on, without lots of add-ons, but could also point to an unparallelled track record. To put our extensive experience, protecting the banking sector, into some sort of context, across the Gulf Cooperation Council area alone, we can now count 10 major banks - in Bahrain, Dubai, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia - as customers. Significantly, as our CCTV systems are embedded, rather than PC based, they are recognised for their stability - essential in the banking environment - whereas PC dependent solutions have a reputation for crashing without warning."ATM FocusLooking in more detail at the systems from Dedicated Micros which have been put in place at NBK, since 2006, to support the effective monitoring of vital local and overseas ATM related infrastructure. These comprise 28 individual DV-IP ATM units which are used primarily to protect standalone Automated Teller Machines, with numbers expected to rise as part of the ongoing ATM project. There are also 145 NetVu Connected DS2 DVRs, with typically two systems connected at each National Bank of Kuwait branch plus an associated RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) unit giving additional storage capacity to the existing internal hard disk of the DVR.This set-up offers redundancy and resilience to ensure any recorded video images are securely stored. In the case of the larger Dubai branch this combination was doubled up and four (DS2s and RAIDs) were installed at NBK's extensive Bahrain site. To help with the management of the geographically dispersed NetVu Connected CCTV infrastructure, at an early stage, Dedicated Micros was called upon to assist NBK in the setting-up of centralised monitoring from a control room. This was achieved by deploying NetVu Observer video management software to allow operators to seamlessly view distributed images from any NetVu Connected product.     DV-IP ATM units from Dedicated Micros have proved useful in making transactions more secure and safe  The robust DV-IP ATM units specified for the National Bank of Kuwait project are designed to work, primarily, within the confines of an Automated Teller Machine. Certainly the security challenges with regards to banking are most keenly felt when it comes to the safe operation of Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) whose accessibility makes them a convenient target for card skimming, shoulder surfing, and even physical theft from customers. It is CCTV systems, specifically remotely accessible DVRs, that are at the very heart of efforts to deal with these types of threat.Combining Video and Transaction DataThe Dedicated DV-IP ATM, based on NetVu Connected technology which ensures its interoperability with other DM and AD Group systems, is able to process transaction data which is then recorded with video footage. Post event analysis, via a powerful text search engine, provides video imagery of the ATM user plus the associated transaction information. For NBK this allows security staff to deal with any fraudulent activity and ensures that customer services representatives are well placed to quickly resolve any genuine customer withdrawal disputes.Marrying up the DS2 DVRs with RAID units at every NBK branch, also facilitated the effective monitoring of each location including the in-branch ATMs not covered by the DV-IP ATMs. With, in this case, the cameras in the ATMs connected to the DVRs which had been specifically programmed to have the capability to associate transaction data with the appropriate video footage.The ability of both the DV-IP ATM systems and DS2 DVRs, deployed for the NBK project, to apply Dedicated Micros' TransCoding technology to record evidential quality MJPEG locally and simultaneously support low bit rate data streaming in MPEG-4 compression format for remote viewing has proved to be advantageous in keeping bandwidth demands on NBK's network to an absolute minimum. Of course local recording (including the additional capacity provided by the RAID units) has the added benefit that, even in the event of a network failure, recording is not interrupted or vital evidence lost. Adding-Up the Benefits  NetVu connected solution from Dedicated Micros has enabled National Bank of Kuwait to monitor all the branches Reflecting on the success of the project to date, a spokesperson for the Engineering Services Division, NBK, commented: "The NetVu Connected solution from Dedicated Micros we have adopted has given us the opportunity, for the first time, to monitor all of our branches remotely 24/7 wherever they might be and to cover a large number of ATMs (181 at the latest count) through the ATM transactions interface. We have been very pleased with the performance of the NetVu Observer viewing software over the past four years - which we are in the process of upgrading to Pick-a-Point Icon - as it has made it extremely easy to retrieve footage and to playback recordings over the network. With numerous cases involving ATMs reported on a daily basis and, with the Dedicated Micros' solution in place, we have been able to provide recorded footage, in a timely manner, to offer proof of what has actually happened. In practice, we have found the speed that video can be delivered across the network to be extremely favourable, for management and archiving, when set against the limited bandwidth provided."The distributed architecture of the solution has also meant that even, when there has been a network issue, critical recording has been able to continue unabated. Testament to this is the fact that since the start of the project no footage has been lost in this way. A major benefit we have also seen, in terms of cost of ownership, is the fact that from an Engineering Services' point of view the DVRs have been much easier to maintain, compared to what was in place before, and we have been very impressed with the stability of the DVRs in operation with zero reported failures. Alongside this the web-based configuration for the Dedicated Micros' systems has proved to be very intuitive."Future Plans Looking ahead, Dedicated Micros is working closely with NBK to expand the capabilities of the surveillance infrastructure. One key development soon to go 'live' is the implementation of the Pick-a-Point Icon multi-site video management solution in the bank's main control room to further enhance the remote monitoring of all of the bank's geographically dispersed locations. The uplift in functionality provided by Pick-a-Point Icon's more extensive features, compared to NetVu Observer, should greatly enhance the ability of the bank's security staff to manage and control their CCTV infrastructure.     Dedicated Micros has formed many of the building blocks for the success of today's CCTV industry From the start Pick-A-Point Icon has been designed to be intuitive for operators, simplifying and speeding up image retrieval. In future, operators in the main NBK control room will be able to select cameras using Pick-A-Point Icon's enhanced GUI (Graphical User Interface) via multiple map screens and highly detailed map images, allowing them to pick a camera on-screen without having to know which digital video recorder the camera is linked to. Pick-A-Point Icon is based around a robust standalone hardware based workstation, which eliminates the reliability issues associated with PC based systems - a key consideration in the banking sector.Closed IPTV InvestmentCommented Salim Idris, General Manager (Middle East), Dedicated Micros: "As the surveillance solution moves ahead, we are delighted that National Bank of Kuwait has confirmed that it will also act as a trailblazer for the deployment of our award winning Closed IPTV 'IP Video' solution. This follows on from the successful testing of the Closed IPTV version of the SD Advanced hybrid NVR/DVR, which will now be rolled out gradually across all of the bank's extensive branch network, making NBK one of the first customers in the Middle East region for this new solution."Essentially, adopting Closed IPTV systems such as the SD Advanced - in conjunction with a Layer 3 Enhanced CCTV Switch which provides greater security for less configuration effort than a conventional managed switch - makes deploying an IP Video, CCTV system safe, secure and simple. The sophisticated HyperSense technology built in to the cameras removes ambient light from the scene leaving only the objects that strongly reflect the IR light emitted by the integrated invisible IR LED flash to be displayed. The US-based Western Virginia Water Authority, which provides a water service to 155,000 customers in Roanoke and Roanoke County, has adopted a NetVu Connected CCTV solution based around Dedicated Micros surveillance technology.Since the events of September 11th, water authorities across the US have been duty-bound to re-examine whether critical assets, such as dams, reservoirs, and water treatment facilities, are secure against threats.Going digital The Western Virginia Water Authority which oversees assets, including four reservoirs and water treatment plants, two waste water treatment plants, 30-40 water storage tanks, and 20 - 30 wells and pump stations was looking for a digital CCTV solution that would support their existing analogue cameras, but also utilise new technologies such as Internet Protocol (IP) connectivity and high-quality digital recording.United Security & Control Systems, Inc., a leading dealer and installer in Virginia, was selected for its solution, which centred on the Digital Sprite 2 (DS2) Digital Video Recorder (DVR) from Dedicated Micros.  Manufacturer Representative Firm, Southeast Security provided the six Dedicated Micros DS2 units and vital technical support during the installation process.The Dedicated Micros NetVu Connected architecture has given the Authority a flexible, scalable platform for integrating all of its cameras, recording devices, and monitors.  In some locations such as the headquarters, cameras and monitors were connected directly to the DVRs using coaxial cable. In more remote locations, the DV-IP Codec and DV-IP Encoders were used to encode data from analogue cameras for transmission through the network and recording on remotely located DS2 DVRs.Effective control Today, the DS2 units provide the Authority with flexible, digital, control over video surveillance.  A standard Ethernet connection allows live and recorded viewing on a networked PC using Dedicated Micro's NetVu ObserVer software or via web pages using a standard Internet browser."From my office computer, NetVu ObserVer lets me simultaneously monitor 36 cameras, which is nearly every camera we have installed," says Scott Agner, Special Projects Manager, Western Virginia Water Authority. "All of our division directors also are authorised to view live camera feeds or recordings anytime they want from any computer attached to the network.  We can even log onto the network and observe from home using secure VPN lines." The DS2 units provide the Authority with flexible, digital, control video surveillance "The interface of NetVu ObserVer is familiar and intuitive,"  Agner continues.  "This makes it easy to pick out exactly which camera or angle you want to see.  It's also easy to set up a ‘tour' that mimics the actions of a sentry by looking at a particular area for a specific period of time and then moving onto another location."MultiMode Recording is another important product feature because it gives the Authority the ability to set different record rates, resolutions, and compression algorithms for individual cameras.  For example, some indoor cameras are set up to record at a higher resolution and 24-fps rate when there is motion detected and then conserve storage when there is no activity in the area.  Other cameras, such as the ones located on top of the dam or reservoir, continuously record at 1 to 5-fps.  The recording profile for each camera can be customised with the system.Operational benefits The Dedicated Micros solution has delivered several benefits to the water authority.  For workers, the surveillance system provides an extra level of protection.  One worker can, for example, remotely monitor the activities of another worker who is taking inventory in the dangerous chlorine storage room of a water treatment plant.  During periods of severe weather, the system also helps keep workers out of risky situations by allowing them get a remote view of an asset, such as the crest of a dam, rather than checking it physically.The system also allows workers to check equipment remotely on a regular basis, saving them significant amounts of time each day.  "Twice an hour, one of the operators at the Falling Creek water treatment plant has to check that a key pump is running properly," says Agner.  "Because it's a pulse pump that vibrates, the operator can check it using the surveillance system.  This eliminates a 5-minute walk to the pump each way.  Checking the camera instead saves more than two hours of time in an eight-hour day."This higher level of productivity is multiplied many times through the organisation, as workers use cameras to check water levels above and below spillways, pumps and valves, finish water clear wells, sedimentation tanks, car parks, access gates, and a myriad of other assets.Headquarters protection Security at the Authority's headquarters building in downtown Roanoke is just as important as at the remote water production assets.  Employees in the collections office, where customers can pay their bills in person, now feel more secure knowing that the surveillance system is there - both as a deterrent to theft and a means of recording customer behaviour when there are disagreements.Future expansion Looking ahead, the project has been such a success that the Authority currently has plans to install an additional DS2 DVR at an equipment maintenance depot.
