COE Ltd, the UK designer of advanced video surveillance systems, has completed a project to extend and update the control and transmissions systems for a 300 camera upgrade for Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Malaysia.  This upgrade is based on COE's high capacity fibre optic video transmission and CCTV control technology.  The contract, won through competitive tender, included additional cameras and strategic Control Rooms to ensure continuous monitoring throughout the airport.

COE provided extensive design services to systems integrator SapuraCrest and a control and transmission system was selected based on COE X-Net CWDM optical backbone and COE Telecommand multiple control point CCTV design.  This design ensured that all video services were managed on the existing airport fibres.

"The technical knowledge and experience in such complex systems was of great value in helping us keep infrastructure upgrade costs and disruption to a minimum," commented Karu Karunakaran, SapuraCrest's General Manager.  "The system was simple to install and the seamless integration with the existing CCTV system originally supplied by COE Ltd made the whole project a smooth upgrade."

COE designed and supplied the original 600 camera CCTV sub-system for Malaysia Airlines System some 10 years ago and has supported the system ever since.  The system has proved extremely reliable and remains a case study in design of complex CCTV systems in a difficult environment.  Through careful planning and software enhancement the existing system was given a new lease of life with the minimum of equipment change-out.

Peter Read, Operations Director for Malaysia Airlines System commented:  "Our operations at KLIA are dependent upon maintaining a safe and secure environment for our passengers and staff and the CCTV solution provided by COE Ltd has enabled us to meet our immediate requirements whilst providing a flexible platform for future expansion."

Andrew Wallace, Chief Executive of COE, said:  "COE designs and supplies products which with a very long operational life and supports them throughout their operation.  The quality and reliability of our products meant that after all this time and operation, an upgrade could be considered.  The extremely low cost of ownership for the client has been maintained through this very cost effective process."
