Physical security technologies are a prominent tool used by correctional facilities to provide a safe, secure, and controlled environment for staff, inmates, and the wider community. Among several functions, security technologies are used to prevent unauthorised access, to detect contraband, to monitor inmate movements and activities, and to protect staff. For security technology manufacturers, integrators and consultants, the corrections market presents distinctive challenges. We asked our Expert Panel Roundtable: What are the unique aspects of the corrections market, and how should the physical security industry adapt?

Within the corrections market, there has been a significant influx of new and updated technology over the past several years. From drones to intelligent surveillance cameras to body worn technology and beyond, the corrections market is continuously adapting alongside advancements in the physical security industry to enhance public safety efforts. However, with ever-rising crime rates, collaboration between the corrections market and the physical security industry should be much closer for both to learn from each other and innovate even faster. This is especially true as it pertains to public and private partnerships to steadily keep up with tech upgrades, as well as secure metadata collection. One of the biggest challenges the corrections sector struggles with today is interoperability between systems, but metadata can help to support collaboration and communication across systems, enabling intelligent data analytics capabilities to shrink investigation timelines and uphold comprehensive public safety efforts.

The corrections market is typically behind in technology and the last to adopt newer trends. Having said that, the safety of both officers and inmates is paramount. AI is becoming more prevalent in the conversation as a practical way to enhance overall situational awareness. Custom AI applications must be created for alerting corrections staff to potential incidents before they escalate, monitoring inmate movements, tracking officer activities, and detecting aggressive behaviours. The adoption and effective use of AI can provide greater staffing and operational efficiencies for corrections facilities, meeting this market’s unique security and surveillance requirements.

The corrections market faces multiple distinct security challenges. High-security requirements and the need for continuous monitoring, both indoors and at the perimeter, are only the beginning. Other challenges include regulatory compliance, staffing and budget constraints, and the need for exceptional durability and tamper resistance of cameras and sensors. To adapt, the physical security industry must implement AI-enabled analytics to detect threats in real time. Having some level of automated assistance is crucial because staff cannot effectively monitor all areas continually. Advanced perimeter security requires integrating access control with video surveillance systems. Smart sensors and automation can enhance efficiency by reducing manual inspections. Cybersecurity measures are crucial to protect inmate data and facility controls. Privacy and safety are also paramount, with features like AI-based privacy masking and anti-ligature form factors.

Correctional facilities face unique challenges, such as overcrowding, budget constraints, and the need for effective rehabilitation programs. To address these issues, comprehensive security solutions are essential. Integrated systems that combine physical and cybersecurity measures provide robust protection. Advanced surveillance technologies, including AI-powered cameras and predictive analytics, enhance monitoring and threat detection. Biometric access control systems, such as fingerprint and facial recognition, improve security by regulating entry to restricted areas. Visitor management solutions ensure that all visitors are accounted for and authorised. Quick communication tools enable swift delivery of critical instructions during emergencies. Powerful reporting capabilities offer real-time audit trails and compliance documentation, simplifying regulatory adherence. Implementing these advanced security measures can significantly enhance overall security, operational efficiency, and ensure the safety of staff, inmates, and visitors within correctional facilities.

Physical Security in the corrections/detention space has never been optional, due to the nature of the facilities. The shift from analog to digital has been underway for well over a decade to ensure the safety of all parties on prem and to restrict human and contraband traffic internally and externally while providing an audit trail, including video, of all areas. While the correctional space does pose unique challenges, manufacturers of various hardware and software offerings, along with the niche group of service providers and consultants are constantly refining the implementation of new technology to address these challenges. Some examples are contraband detection technologies, automation of access control to various areas in the facility, drone detection/ deterrence, fence line technology, edge sensors and cameras and of course true AI and object classification, be it device or server based. All these adaptions with technology are for the sole purpose of fulfilling the mission to protect human capital and premises from all interior and exterior threats.
