Vanderbilt solutions boost security at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital

The system provides an ideal balance between security and convenience You want a security system that can solve your problems today, but you also want to plan for tomorrow. Vanderbilt integrated security systems are designed with the future in mind, making it easy for you to add new functionality, as and when you need it. The world-renowned Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital in London treated its first patient in 1852. It currently offers the widest range of paediatric services under one roof in Britain, and pioneers new treatments and drugs through its research body, the Institute of Child Health. Visitor management Great Ormond Street treats over 90,000 patients each year for some of the rarest and most complex conditions. It is a high-pressure environment, with a heavy and constant throughput of staff, patients, and visitors. The hospital was naturally concerned that any new security system should not inconvenience already pressured medical staff, or cause frustration to visitors. It required a system that could cope with this wide variety of users, including a high number of visitors, and yet be so convenient to use that it did not interfere with the day-to-day functioning of this unique medical facility. In choosing an access control system, the hospital was also looking to the future. Pending modification of the hospitals existing IT systems, it is hoped that visitor ID cards will also be used to facilitate cashless vending throughout the building, enabling patients and visitors to use their ID to purchase, for example, phone calls and refreshments. Perimeter protection "We specified Granta as it is a fantastic system that you know isn't going to fall over in years to come if you need to add additional facilities to it" "We wanted to secure the perimeter of the building in the face of rising crime in London, and to bring the Trust's security in-line with BSIA standards. Great Ormond Street has not been a particularly dangerous place to work or stay, but there has been growing concern from staff and families about security matters," said David de Wet, Facilities Manager - Security and Transport at Great Ormond Street. "This is a large system operating in a very busy environment. The security system needed to be easy to use and reliable, yet flexible enough to adapt to the hospital's future requirements," said Paul Roberts, Sales Director with installer Link Integrated Security Systems. Vanderbilt Cotag equipment The Hospital has undergone a major security upgrade using Vanderbilt Cotag equipment to secure some 120 access points throughout the hospital building. Installed by Link Integrated Security Systems of Nottingham, the Granta for Windows V4 system utilises 120 proximity readers throughout the site providing a secure environment for staff and patients alike. The system provides an ideal balance between security and convenience. It enables everybody visiting the hospital to be issued with a pass which allows them easy access to zones they are authorised to enter, such as the ward where their child is being treated, while restricting entry to areas they do not need to visit. Granta for Windows Version 4 Granta for Windows Version 4 includes a CCTV Manager, Visitor Manager, and TCP/IP support functions. Its Visitor Manager capacity allows users to check the status of visitor activities and security badges can be printed to incorporate logos, text, and the visitor's portrait. "We specified Granta as it is a fantastic system that you know isn't going to fall over in years to come if you need to add additional facilities to it," said David de Wet, Facilities Manager - Security and Transport at Great Ormond Street.

Samsung Techwin WiseNetIII full HD cameras installed at Gala Bingo club in the UK

Samsung SND-6084, SNO-6084R cameras ensure high quality images can be captured in low lit areas of club Samsung Techwin Europe has supplied 35 Samsung Open Platform WiseNetIII Full HD cameras to ensure that the club’s customers can enjoy playing bingo in a totally secure and safe environment. Although Gala Bingo has an ongoing programme to refurbish and update its’ clubs throughout the UK, the Southampton club is the first new build that the company has opened for some years. Gala Bingo has invested over £5M in the new club which is located at Antelope Park in the Thornhill district of Southampton. It is a clear sign that the company has confidence in an industry that has been struggling in recent years and that it intends to continue to expand its business by providing the best possible environments for its customers to enjoy the social aspects of playing bingo. Best equipment for security personnel to keep players safe The club offers players a new bingo experience with two distinct areas to play; Bingo Club and Bingo Pub. The Bingo Club is aimed at traditional bingo players who want to get their eyes down and focus on the numbers, whilst The Bingo Pub is a more relaxed area for players who like to chat and relax whilst still playing the same bingo games in a more informal way. “We were confident that the new club would be a great success from day one and particularly so as it is designed to appeal to a wide audience,” said Kevin Willis, Risk Manager for Gala Bingo. “In addition to the need to comply with local authority licensing requirements, we considered it essential therefore to provide the club’s management and our security colleagues with the best possible tools to ensure that players are kept safe.” VIdeo surveillance system design The contract to install the video surveillance system was awarded to Nottinghamshire based Link Integrated Security Services Ltd, a Silver Partner of the Samsung STEP (Samsung Techwin Eco Partnership) programme which has been introduced to provide Samsung Techwin Europe’s network of sales channel partners with the resources and tools to help them increase their share of the IP network based solutions market. Link Integrated Security Services Ltd worked closely with Samsung Techwin Europe to design a solution which would cover all the public areas without having a negative impact on aesthetics of the brand new club. The WiseNetIII camera models installed by Link Integrated Security Services Ltd at the club include SND-6084 2MP domes as well as SNO-6084R bullet cameras which have built-in IR LEDs to ensure high quality images can be captured in low lit areas of the club. Video analytics & 360 degree cameras The cameras are able to take advantage of the high performance WiseNetIII DSP chipset which has the processing power to simultaneously run multiple edge based applications. This provides Gala Bingo with the opportunity to utilise specialist onboard video analytics applications, such as people counting and heat mapping. A number of SNF-7010 3MP 360 degree fisheye cameras have also been installed to cover areas of the club where a much larger number of fixed cameras might normally be required, to avoid any blind spots. The images captured by the cameras are being recorded onto a Samsung SRN-4000 Network Video Recorder (NVR) which provides a highly resilient, low maintenance recording solution. Its features include a built-in RAID hard drive ‘Hot Swap’ facility which ensures that recording is not interrupted if a fault occurs. Voted CCTV Product of the Year 2015 by the readers of PSI Magazine, the SRN-4000 can handle the images from up to 64 cameras and so provides the ability for additional cameras to be installed at the club should there be a requirement to do so in the future. Link Integrated Security Services also installed Samsung Smart Viewer software to allow authorised users, such as Kevin Willis, to remotely monitor and manage the images captured by the 35 cameras. Quality surveillance images and client peace of mind “I cannot praise more highly the pre- and post-sales support that I received from the Link Integrated Security Services Ltd and Samsung Techwin Europe teams,” said Kevin Willis. “Their combined technical expertise has ensured that our new club in Southampton has a video surveillance system that is more than just fit for purpose. Although the club has only been open for a short period, the system has already proved its value in terms of providing peace of mind that we have access to superb quality images should an emergency occur or an incident need investigating.”
