The Nemetschek Group has initiated a pivotal collaboration with Vienna Airport, marking a significant step in the digital transformation of the aviation sector.
As a renowned provider of software solutions for architecture, engineering, construction, operations, and media industries, Nemetschek is introducing its dRofus dTwin solution at Vienna Airport.
This initiative aims to enhance operational efficiency and asset management across the airport's facilities throughout their lifecycle.
Integration of dRofus dTwin technology
Vienna Airport is adopting Nemetschek's digital twin technology to implement an openBIM-based facility management system. This deployment involves the integration of dRofus with dTwin, creating a unified platform for the harmonisation of building and asset information from various sources and stakeholders.
This approach will facilitate the provision of accurate building data, delivering comprehensive digital replicas of the airport's infrastructure.
Optimising operations and sustainability
Dr. Günther Ofner, CFO of Flughafen Wien AG, stated, “Digitalisation is now indispensable in large construction projects. Together with the Nemetschek Group, Vienna Airport is intensively driving forward the digital mapping of its infrastructure. With the implementation of the ABIGAIL platform, all airport buildings and areas will be digitally recorded in the future – Vienna Airport will thus receive a digital twin.”
The digital twin will enable more efficient and sustainable management of the airport's extensive infrastructure.
Future expansion of Vienna Airport
Serving over 31 million passengers annually, Vienna Airport ranks as Austria's largest. A planned expansion of Terminal 3 by 2027 will further enhance the airport's facilities, adding new security checkpoints, gates, lounges, and an expanded shopping and restaurant area.
The use of dRofus dTwin in this project reflects its suitability for complex airport ecosystems.
Commitment to long-term collaboration
Sunil Pandita, Chief Division Officer for Planning & Design and Digital Twin Business Unit at Nemetschek Group, expressed his satisfaction: “We are delighted that Vienna Airport is now expanding the use of our solution across its entire lifecycle. Our software platform for digital twins is particularly well-suited for complex ecosystems such as airports.”
Furthermore, Rolf Jerving, CEO of dRofus, shared excitement about the partnership's potential: “We look forward to a long-term collaboration with Vienna Airport, implementing our industry-leading dRofus dTwin solution for lifecycle asset management.”
Stefan Kovacs, Head of Planning, Construction, and Asset Management at Flughafen Wien AG, highlighted the advantages of model-based management, ensuring up-to-date knowledge of the airport's infrastructure.
Digital twin platform connectivity
The digital twin platform employs open standards to integrate into Vienna Airport's existing systems, ensuring seamless connectivity with all relevant building solutions through open interfaces and APIs.
Christoph Eichler, CEO of VIE Build, noted that this integration allows for more informed decision-making by identifying enhanced connections. Dr. Jimmy Abualdenien, Head of Digital Twin Product at Nemetschek, reinforced this by stating that their platform provides a comprehensive view of built assets, aiding in efficient operations and decision-making.
This partnership between Vienna Airport and the Nemetschek Group underscores their dedication to innovation and sustainability in European aviation, setting the stage for smarter airport solutions and improved customer experiences.
The Nemetschek Group, a pioneering global provider of software solutions for the AEC/O (architecture, engineering, construction, and operations) and media industries, announced a landmark collaboration with Vienna Airport.
As part of this collaboration, Vienna Airport will implement Nemetschek’s dRofus dTwin solution as its Airport BIM & Facility Integration Platform (ABIGAIL), aiming to optimise operations and asset management across the airport’s extensive facilities and all lifecycle stages.
Power of dRofus dTwin
With the integration of Nemetschek’s digital twin technology, Vienna Airport will implement openBIM-based facility management to optimise process and information sharing. For this project, dTwin is deployed in combination with dRofus as the dRofus dTwin solution.
The power of dRofus dTwin will provide comprehensive digital replicas of the airport’s infrastructure across its whole lifecycle, supplying a central platform that is connecting and harmonising all process relevant building and asset information from multiple sources, systems and stakeholders to support all users with up-to-date building information.
Enhancing operations and sustainability
“Digitalisation is now indispensable in large construction projects. Together with the Nemetschek Group, Vienna Airport is intensively driving forward the digital mapping of its infrastructure. With the implementation of the ABIGAIL platform, all airport buildings and areas will be digitally recorded in the future – Vienna Airport will thus receive a digital twin. “
“This will enable us to manage the construction and operation of the extensive airport infrastructure even more efficiently and sustainably,” states Dr. Günther Ofner, CFO of Flughafen Wien AG.
Largest Austrian airport
With more than 31 million passengers, Vienna Airport is the largest Austrian airport and among the top European airports.
With the planned expansion of Terminal 3 in 2027, Vienna Airport will create a future-orientated ambience with 70,000 m² on three levels, a new central security checkpoint, additional gates, comfortable lounges and, above all, a spacious and experience-orientated shopping and restaurant area. dRofus dTwin is already being used for this purpose.
“We are delighted that Vienna Airport is now expanding the use of our solution across its entire lifecycle. Our software platform for digital twins is particularly well-suited for complex ecosystems such as airports”, says Sunil Pandita, Chief Division Officer Planning & Design and Digital Twin Business Unit at the Nemetschek Group.
Lifecycle asset management
Rolf Jerving, CEO of dRofus and VP of Digital Twin Business Unit, adds: “We look forward to a long-term collaboration with Vienna Airport, implementing our industry leading dRofus dTwin solution for lifecycle asset management.”
“Operating an airport is challenging, especially when dealing with numerous different buildings. However, model-based operations management in ABIGAIL offers numerous advantages, as existing and new information can be precisely combined and utilised,” explains Stefan Kovacs, Head of Planning, Construction and Asset Management at Flughafen Wien AG.
“This gives us a constant, up-to-date overview of the structural and technical infrastructure, which we can then incorporate into construction projects and operations.”
Digital twin platform
Nemetschek’s digital twin platform leverages open standards to integrate with Vienna Airport’s existing ecosystem and connect via open interfaces and APIs to all relevant building systems and solutions.
“By linking all relevant information, new foundations are created. This allows connections to be better recognised, enabling faster, more informed decisions to be made based on this information”, says Christoph Eichler, CEO of VIE Build, a subsidiary of Vienna Airport, which is leading the project.
Dr. Jimmy Abualdenien, Head of Digital Twin Product at Nemetschek adds: “This is exactly what we developed our platform for: Technically agnostic and as open as possible, to truly show the entire built asset with all data across its entire lifecycle and enable better operations and decision-making.”
Vienna Airport’s partnership with Nemetschek Group further cements its position as a pioneer in innovation and sustainability within European aviation, paving the way for smarter airports and improved traveller experiences.
