Airbus Defence and Space, in collaboration with Omnitronics, have formalised their commitment to developing interoperable critical communication solutions by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Comms Connect conference and expo held in Melbourne.
This partnership aims to advance the transition from narrowband to broadband communication systems for end users.
Exploring interoperable communication gateways
Airbus Defence and Space specialises in providing mission-critical communication and collaboration technologies. These systems merge traditional narrowband, such as professional mobile radios over TETRA networks, with next-generation broadband solutions utilising 4G and 5G technologies. These offerings are crucial for public safety organisations and critical infrastructure operators that demand secure and reliable communication channels.
Omnitronics, on the other hand, contributes its expertise in radio dispatch management systems, communications management, Radio over IP, and interoperability solutions. Their comprehensive experience spans mission-critical agencies and enterprises on a global scale.

Through the MoU, Airbus and Omnitronics will explore the development of interoperable gateways. These gateways will aim to integrate Agnet, Airbus’ broadband communication platform, with its TETRA systems, narrowband standards such as P25 and Digital Mobile Radios (DMR), and Omnitronics’ radio dispatch systems.
The goal is to facilitate seamless integration and improved communication capabilities in mission-critical environments, ensuring a smoother transition to broadband for users operating in the field.
Strategic collaboration for enhanced solutions
Alain Ruinet, Head of APAC for Public Safety and Security at Airbus Defence and Space, emphasised the importance of this collaboration, stating: “This collaboration represents a strategic step in enhancing interoperability between different communication systems, a vital factor in mission-critical operations. By combining Airbus’ robust platforms with Omnitronics’ proven technology and expertise, we aim to deliver flexible and reliable solutions tailored to the evolving needs of our customers.”
