Samsung Techwin upgrade for IP Network cameras dynamically improves bandwidth usage
Samsung Techwin upgrade for IP Network cameras dynamically improves bandwidth usage

Samsung Techwin has introduced a firmware upgrade that has dramatically reduced the bandwidth and video storage requirements of the company’s IP network cameras, domes and encoders. “The Samsung Techwin software engineering team has devised some very clever improvements to our version of the H.264 method of compressing images and as a result, a much lower bitrate is required to transmit the high quality images captured by our HD megapixel cameras,” said Tim Biddulph, IP Product Manager for Samsung Techwin Europe Ltd. “Our 3MP Full HD models, for example, previously needed a bit rate of 10Mbps, but now only require 3Mbps to ensure that there are no latency issues or that artefacts do not spoil the quality of the video when customers have configured the cameras to capture images at the highest possible resolution.”  The upgraded firmware, which applies to almost all of Samsung Techwin’s IP network models, can be downloaded free of charge by customers from the product section at www.samsungsecurity.co.uk. “The improvement in the bitrate is in itself a major benefit to our customers because it reduces the amount of bandwidth and storage required to operate an effective video surveillance system,” said Tim Biddulph. “The firmware upgrade however innovatively offers a lot more in terms of transmission efficiency in that it is able to dynamically adjust the transmission bitrate and compression settings depending on the level of activity that may be occurring within a camera’s  field of view. There is little need to transmit very high quality images of an empty building or car park at night, but when however there is activity this needs to be transmitted. Our upgraded firmware automatically takes this into account and adjusts the camera settings accordingly. This results in a much more efficient and effective use of the available bandwidth.”

Samsung Techwin’s new WiseNetIII 2MP Full HD network vandal-resistant dome camera, the SNV-6084, is designed to work effectively in severe weather conditions as well as being resistant to physical attack. The SNV-6084, which is IK10 vandal resistant and weatherproof to IP66, can withstand high temperature variations of -50°C to +55°C, making it an ideal video surveillance solution in even the most challenging environmental conditions. The low price point of the SNV-6084 makes it ideal for video surveillance projects such as airports, ports, car parks, trading estates and open public spaces where there is a need to capture evidence grade images from a large number of cameras. Both the SNV-6084’s camera and its in-built heater can be powered by standard PoE (Power over Ethernet), negating the need for the installation of separate cables for power and image transmission, or additional costly midspans.  Equipped with a 3-8.5mm motorised varifocal lens, the ONVIF conformant SNV-6084 is a true Day/Night camera with an infra-cut filter. It is designed to capture high quality colour images at an ultra-fast frame rate of 60fps at 1080p and features enhanced Wide Dynamic Range which with performance greater than 120dB can accurately produce images in scenes that simultaneously contain very bright and very dark areas. In November 2013, Samsung Techwin will further broaden its WiseNetIII 2MP Full HD network range with the introduction of the SNV-5084 vandal and extreme weather resistant dome camera. Equipped with a 1.3 megapixel camera, the SNV-5084 will share all the key features of the SNV-6084 which include bandwidth friendly H.264 compression with the option to also use MJPEG compression, and a multi-crop feature enabling users to highlight and crop up to nine areas of interest in order for the camera to only send the images within that area at a preferred resolution and frame rate, enabling a much smarter and efficient use of the available network bandwidth. Other key features include Digital Image Stabilization (DIS), which negates the effects of vibration, and Defog which can be used to help improve the clarity of images captured in poor weather conditions such as rain, smoke or fog. A built-in SD/SDHC/SDXC memory slot provides the opportunity for authorised users to remotely access and download video that has been recorded onto a memory card. The SNV-5084 and SNV-6084 will both offer Intelligent Video Analytics (IVA) which can assist in the detection of activity by various means, such as tripwire and enter/exit direction, object appear/disappear and ‘tampering’, which creates an alert if paint is sprayed on a camera lens or there is unauthorised movement of a camera away from its usual field of view. Alternatively, the motion detection technology built into the WiseNetIII DSP chipset can greatly reduce the false alarm rate by learning what is the normal motion of the scene and ignoring, for example, the fluttering leaves of trees. The SNV-6084 and SNV-5084 join 14 other camera models that incorporate the WiseNetIII DSP chipset. These have been developed by Samsung Techwin as a result of a market research programme which identified what users and installers felt were the key ‘must haves’ in order for high definition IP network cameras to automatically become the preferred choice when a new video surveillance system was being specified, or an existing system was being upgraded. As is the case with all Samsung professional security products, the SNV-6084 and SNV-5084 will be supplied with full support services from Samsung Techwin Europe Ltd, including free system design, free technical support and a full three-year warranty. Samsung’s new WiseNetIII 2MP Full HD (1080P) network camera range on show at IFSEC 2013

The eight new WiseNetIII camera models have been developed by Samsung as a result of a market research programme which identified what users and installers felt were the key ‘must haves’ in order for high definition IP network cameras to automatically become the preferred choice when a new video surveillance system was being specified, or an existing system was being upgraded. “Price is always an important consideration and it was also not a surprise to learn that customers wanted to see further improvements in image quality particularly in low light conditions,” said Tim Biddulph, IP Product Manager for Samsung Techwin Europe Ltd. “Also high up on the wish list was smarter utilisation of network bandwidth and the need for cameras to be more installer friendly by making them easier to install and configure.” Samsung’s response to the feedback from its existing and potential customers has been to pack the new models, with a long list of new technically advanced features, many of which ensure that superb quality images can be captured and recorded regardless of the lighting or environmental conditions.  The new Full HD cameras and domes can capture high quality images when the lighting level is as low as 0.01 Lux, and have an ultra fast frame rate of 60fps at 1080p which results in latency free clear images. The enhanced Wide Dynamic Range built into the WiseNetIII DSP chipset, with performance greater than 100dB, can accurately produce images in scenes that simultaneously contain very bright and very dark areas. P-iris technology optimises the iris when multiple lighting conditions exist within a single field of view to create images with better clarity and depth of field.  A Defog feature can be used to help improve the clarity of images captured in poor weather conditions such as rain or fog, whilst Digital Image Stabilization (DIS), previously only seen in analogue chipsets, negates the effects of a camera shaking due to high winds or building vibration. A Simple Focus feature, which is built into most of the models, automatically focuses the camera. All that is needed is one simple push of a button on the back of the camera to achieve optical focus. Collectively the eight new models are designed to offer a solution for every possible type of application. Samsung’s stand at IFSEC will be divided into various vertical market zones, such as retail, education, commercial and transportation, to allow visitors to identify the best combination of WiseNetIII cameras and domes to meet the requirements of specific projects. “Within each zone we will be able to demonstrate the key features of a specific camera model or recording device and how it can best help provide the solution to monitor what may be a range of activities within that market sector,” said Peter Ainsworth, Senior Product Manager for Samsung Techwin Europe Ltd. “In retail, for example, there are many different reasons why a video surveillance system may be deployed such as the need to deter and detect shop theft, ensure health & safety compliance and record activity in car parks, delivery bays and at the point of sale.” The eight new WiseNetIII models are: SNB-6004 - Bodied camera with Simple Focus, P-Iris & day/ night operation. Schools, hospitals, offices, factories, warehouses and  retail stores are just a few of the environments that  could benefit from the new 4CIF range which comprises the SNB-3002 boxed camera, the SND-3082 dome, the SND-3082F flush mounted dome and the SNV-3082 vandal resistant dome. “Customers’ expectations nowadays are very high in terms of the quality of the images they can expect to see captured by security cameras,” said Peter Ainsworth, Senior Product Manager for Samsung Techwin Europe Ltd.  “For the vast majority of applications it would seem unnecessary however to incur the cost of installing megapixel cameras when cameras such as those in our new 4CIF camera range, if positioned correctly,  are more than capable of generating evidence grade images. Apart from the capital cost savings which could be significant on large projects where a high number of cameras are required, 4CIF cameras are also far more bandwidth friendly than megapixel when images need to be viewed over a network.” The 4CIF camera range features Power over Ethernet which can reduce installation costs by providing both power and video/audio transmissions via a single Ethernet cable. It also offers multiple streaming, with a choice of MJPEG, MPEG-4 and H.264 compression methods, providing the option to simultaneously transmit images to multiple locations at various frame rates up to 25 frames per second, and at different resolutions. This allows different authorised users to monitor live images at one location, whilst recording video evidence at another. At the same time images can be saved onto an on-board SD memory card and email notifications of any incidents sent to a smartphone. The new models in the 4CIF network camera range incorporate Samsung’s A1 DSP chipset and are able to capitalise on Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) technology, which makes them ideal for locations where there may be strong contrasting lighting conditions. They also feature Progressive Scan which optimises high quality video capture of moving objects, making it possible, for example, to read car number plates without a motion blur effect.  All four models have a true Day/Night function with infra-cut filter and a CCD image sensor which equips them to capture high quality colour images when lighting is as low as 0.001 Lux with Sens-up and monochrome images at 0.0001 LUX with Sens-up. As well as standard motion detection, the Samsung’s 4CIF cameras have a scene change tampering feature which creates an alert if, for example, paint is sprayed on a camera lens or there is unauthorised movement of a camera away from its usual field of view. A bi-directional audio function offers effective two-way communication. 12 individual polygonal Privacy Zones ensure that windows, for example, in residential properties cannot be viewed, whilst Digital Image Stabilisation (DIS) can negate the effects of the camera shaking due to high winds or building vibration. As is the case with all Samsung professional security products, the 4CIF WDR network camera range is supplied with full support services from Samsung Techwin Europe Ltd, including free system design, free technical support and a full three-year warranty.

Samsung City at IFSEC 2011
Samsung City at IFSEC 2011

Samsung's largest ever booth at IFSEC 2011, the international security exhibition which took place at the NEC, Birmingham on 16th-19th May, provided Europe's fastest growing security brand with the opportunity to give hands-on demonstrations of the latest video surveillance products and technologies.Unsurprisingly, a large number of end-users experts were particularly interested in the Samsung cameras which have an Intelligent Video Analytics (IVA) capability. "Cameras which incorporate our WiseNet1 and SV-5 and DSP chipsets all feature IVA which provides a powerful tool to ensure that users achieve maximum benefit from surveillance systems deployed for a wide range of applications including car parks, industrial estates, petrol forecourts, schools, hospitals, retail parks, airports and ports," said James Smith, European Marketing Manager for Samsung Techwin Europe Ltd.Samsung's license-free Intelligent Video Analytics (IVA) capability includes optical tripwire and enter/exit direction detection, as well as an Appear/Disappear function to detect the movement of objects. IVA also has a scene change tampering function which creates an alert if, for example, paint is sprayed on a camera lens or there is unauthorised movement of a camera away from its usual field of view."One of the cameras which attracted considerable attention was the SNP-5200 1.3 Megapixel high definition network PTZ dome camera, which incorporates a true day/night camera and features a 20x optical zoom lens," said James Smith. "Despite being competitively priced, it is packed full of features and is ‘bandwidth friendly' which makes it the ideal choice for a wide range of applications where a high definition PTZ dome is required as part of an IP based video surveillance system."The SNP-5200 utilises Samsung's WiseNet1 DSP chipset, allowing users to gain maximum benefit from the very latest megapixel camera technology, including license-free Intelligent Video Analytics and dual streaming H.264 / MJPEG compression, which provides the option to simultaneously transmit images to multiple locations at various frame rates and at different resolutions. At the same time, JPEG images of an incident can be attached to an alarm email notification with the additional facility of storing pre and post-alarm images on a camera's internal SD memory card. What is more, dual Ethernet and BNC connectivity provides an upgrade path for hybrid security systems and allows it to be easily set up using standard test monitors.Samsung's DSP chipsetsThere is a large diversity of reasons why surveillance cameras are used and an equally large number of different environments where cameras may physically be installed. Recognising that trying to pack every possible function onto a single DSP chipset is not economical or practical, Samsung's design engineers have developed a series of chipsets each with a set of functions to provide the optimum solution for specific types of applications and projects. Samsung introduce new network HD megapixel vandal resistant domes with built-in IR LEDs
Samsung introduce new network HD megapixel vandal resistant domes with built-in IR LEDs

Samsung have added two new HD megapixel models with built-in IR LEDs to its network vandal-resistant dome camera rangeThe SNV-5080R and SNV-7080R are able to deliver high definition images during both daylight hours and in pitch-black darkness, making them suitable for a wide range of applications requiring effective 24-hour surveillance, including car parks, industrial estates, petrol forecourts, schools, hospitals, retail parks, airports and ports. The SNV-5080R incorporates a 1.3 megapixel camera with a motorised varifocal lens and, with its 15 built-in IR LEDs, is able to capture up to 1280 x 1024 (4:3 format) and HD 720p (16:9 format) images of objects up to 15 metres even in zero light. The SNV-5080R features Samsung Techwin's WiseNet1 DSP chipset to deliver a host of advanced functions such as license-free Intelligent Video Analytics (IVA), which includes optical tripwire and enter/exit direction detection, as well as an Appear/Disappear function to detect the movement of objects. IVA also has a scene change tampering function, which creates an alert if, for example, paint is sprayed on a camera lens or there is unauthorised movement of a camera away from its usual field of view. The H.264, MPEG4, MJPEG and JPEG compression methods incorporated into the SNV-5080R provides users with the ability to simultaneously transmit images to multiple locations at various frame rates and at different resolutions allowing different users, if authorised, to simultaneously monitor live images at one location, whilst recording video evidence at another. POE (Power over Ethernet) functionality reduces installation costs by providing both power and video/audio transmissions via a single Ethernet cable. The SNV-7080R incorporates an ONFIV compliant 3 megapixel Wide Dynamic Range (2MP mode) camera capable of displaying multiple resolutions up to 2048 x 1536 (4:3 format) and Full HD 1080p (16:9 format). Samsung WiseNet1 DSP chipset gets the best from megapixel cameras
Samsung WiseNet1 DSP chipset gets the best from megapixel cameras

The H.264, MPEG4, MJPEG and JPEG compression methods incorporated into the WiseNet1 DSP provide users with the ability to simultaneously transmit images to multiple locations at various frame  rates and at different resolutions including 1.3megapixel (1280 x 1024), 16:9 HD (1280 x 720), QVGA (320 x 240), SVGA (800x 600) and VGA (640 x 480). With such a wide range of compression methods and resolutions to choose from, a number of different users, if authorised, will be able to simultaneously monitor live images at one location, record video evidence at another or view live and recorded images on a Smartphone. At the same time JPEG images of an incident can be attached to an alarm email notification with the additional facility of storing pre and post-alarm images on a camera's internal SD memory card. Samsung has announced that during the Summer of 2010 it intends to introduce a number of ONVIF compliant cameras and domes incorporating the WiseNet1 DSP chipset and a 1/3" Progressive Scan Mega CMOS. Progressive Scan prevents motion artefacts spoiling the quality of video of fast moving objects which can occur with standard CCTV cameras using the traditional ‘interlacing' method of processing   video frames. The new WiseNet1 DSP equipped cameras and domes will also incorporate a wide range of practical time and cost saving features including PoE (Power over Ethernet) and BNC as well as Ethernet outputs, so that video can be transmitted via coaxial cabling as well as over a network. Full duplex bi-directional audio provides the option of interactive communication between a camera's location and a control room. One of the most impressive features of the WiseNet1 DSP is its Intelligent Video Analytics (IVA) capability which includes appear/disappear, optical tripwire and enter/exit direction detection. It also has a scene change tampering function which creates an alert if, for example, paint is sprayed on a camera lens or there is an unauthorized manual change of a camera angle. All the new cameras and domes will have true day/night functionality with an IR cut filter and will also incorporate Samsung Super Noise Reduction (SSNRIII) technology. Other key features include Highlight Compensation (HLC) technology which identifies and neutralises excessively bright areas in an image, enabling an operator to view previously hidden details and Samsung Super Dynamic Range (SSDR) which automatically lightens the dark areas within a scene whilst maintaining the brighter areas at the same level. This ensures that the dark areas become more visible, allowing the operator to ‘view' objects in the shadows.
