Editor Introduction

Artificial intelligence (AI) transforms physical security from a passive, reactive function into an autonomous, proactive one. Rather than just alerting human guards after an event, new systems driven by intelligent agents analyse, decide, and act in real time—handling routine deterrence, investigating anomalies, and reducing alarm fatigue. We asked our Expert Panel Roundtable: What is agentive (or agentic) AI and how is it changing physical security?

Agentive and agentic AI are often used interchangeably, but the distinction matters, especially as new AI buzzwords enter the physical security conversation. Broadly speaking, agentive AI describes systems that assist people and keep humans in the loop, while agentic AI refers to systems that can pursue goals, make decisions, and take action more autonomously. In physical security, most of what we see today is still agentive. AI can help operators surface relevant information, correlate events across systems, reduce investigation time, and support faster, better-informed decisions. That is already changing how security teams work by improving efficiency and situational awareness. Fully agentic AI is a different threshold. Once systems begin acting independently, questions around trust, accountability, and operational risk become much more important. For now, the most meaningful impact is that AI is helping security teams interpret events faster and respond with more context.

Agentic AI refers to systems that do not just analyse data, but pursue goals—coordinating actions, adapting in real time, and operating with defined levels of autonomy. It is less about a single decision and more about continuous orchestration across workflows. In physical security, this shifts systems from passive monitoring to active participants in operations. AI can correlate inputs across video, access control, and other sensors, prioritise risk based on context, and initiate next steps. The result is faster, more consistent outcomes in environments where timing and accuracy are critical. At the same time, autonomy requires clear guardrails. Effective agentic systems rely on high-quality data, well-defined policies, and human oversight to ensure decisions are explainable and aligned with operational intent. Rather than replacing operators, these systems enhance human judgment, escalate critical events in real time, and act as a specialised coworker to help solve complex security challenges.

Agentic AI describes systems that can understand intent, act within defined guardrails, and help users complete multi-step tasks with less manual effort. It can be useful for workflows that are overtly complex for operators or integrators. At HID, we are applying AI first where it can remove friction and reduce configuration errors. One example is HID Linq Cloud, where users can ask the system to create new reader configurations, explain existing ones, and clarify what different settings actually do. Another is an AI-guided ordering experience that helps customers navigate thousands of configuration options and arrive at the right setup for their application. For our partners, that means less guesswork, fewer mistakes, and a better path to staying within the approved parameters for a given customer. That changes physical security in a practical way by simplifying complexity and improving accuracy. Over time, these guided experiences will also evolve into more advanced agentic workflows.

Agentive and agentic AI represent a new kind of teammate for security operations: systems that understand context, reason through complex situations, and assist routine work so human professionals can focus on what they do best: judgment, coordination, and strategic response. Unlike traditional AI that follows rigid rules, agentive systems learn from experience and can plan multi-step tasks. While fully Agentic AI completely replaces the human reasoning and actions, in Agentive AI, the goal is not replacement, it is partnership. These agents augment human capabilities, reflecting a people-first philosophy by letting security teams do more with less while keeping human control at the centre of effective security operations. Consider facilities generating thousands of alerts daily. An agentive system evaluates full context (whether someone's still in view, which doors are critical, whether intervention is needed). It then provides proposals that ease human decision-making, offering to effect follow-up and document the reasoning and decisions for transparency. During evolving incidents, agents use video intelligence to locate relevant cameras, retrieve supporting video data, and summarise context, giving operators the information they need to make quick, informed decisions. This shift from reactive monitoring to proactive security management can become even more powerful if conversational agents connect with wearable devices for field staff. The result is security teams that operate more efficiently without sacrificing the human judgment that defines safe and effective security operations.

Editor Summary

Agentive and agentic AI are transforming physical security from passive monitoring into proactive, autonomous operations. While agentive AI assists operators by surfacing relevant information and simplifying complex configurations, agentic AI acts more autonomously to pursue goals and orchestrate workflows. Together, these systems act as specialised teammates, evaluating alert contexts and summarising data to reduce human workload and fatigue without sacrificing critical human judgment.
