Video intercoms have become increasingly popular in high-end residential projects. Trends and new innovations are driving the growth of intercom systems and expanding how they tie together with other smart home devices.

Gone are the days of hard-wired analog intercom systems that operated separately from other technologies in the home. Integrated with the cloud, the IP-based intercom systems have greater functionality and integrate easily with other Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

Checklist to guide integrators

The newer technologies require a more strategic approach to choosing the right products for the job

Property developers and home builders are on the front lines of specifying which types and brands of IP intercom systems are installed in new developments. Installers and systems integrators also play a role in the decision-making process. All these parties should be educated on new offerings in the market and provided guidance on how to choose among the available products.

The newer technologies require a more strategic approach to choosing the right products for the job. This Technology Report will set forth a checklist to guide integrators and distributors as they review product attributes with an eye toward specifying the perfect system for any installation.

Does the intercom system integrate with other systems?

Many IP video intercom systems now offer integration with smart home systems such as Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit. They may also integrate with other smart home companies such as Control 4, Crestron or SAVANT. Integration allows users to control their intercom system with their voice or through an app, and to integrate it with other smart home devices such as cameras, locks, security sensors and lighting.

An intercom system’s smart control panel drives greater flexibility and functionality for residents. Various functions can be managed from the same screen, including other smart home devices leveraging the same user interface. An Android system such as that provided by DNAKE ensures compatibility with a wide range of additional products.

Is the key scalable with a total for any number of units or flats?

IP intercom systems are scalable to cover smaller systems up to buildings with 1,000 units or more

Multi-unit residential buildings come in all sizes and shapes. IP intercom systems are scalable to cover smaller systems up to buildings with 1,000 units or more. Scalability of systems, implementing IoT and cloud technologies, provides superior performance for buildings of any size and configuration.

In contrast, analog systems were more difficult to scale and involved more wiring and physical connections within each installation, not to mention difficulty connecting to other systems in the home.

Is the intercom key future-proof, offering a long-term plan?

Systems designed to incorporate new features save money from a long-term perspective. Incorporating technologies such as facial recognition, some IP video intercom systems now enhance security by automatically identifying authorised individuals and denying access to unauthorised visitors. This feature can also be used to create personalised welcome messages or to trigger other smart home devices based on the identity of the person at the door. (When choosing this technology, it is important to adhere to any local laws such as GDPR in the EU.) Another trend in IP video intercom systems is the use of video analytics to improve security and efficiency.

Video analytics can detect suspicious activity and alert users, tracking the movement of people and objects, and even analyse facial expressions and emotions. Smart video analytics can help to avoid false positives. It’s easy for the system to tell whether animals or people are passing by. Current developments in artificial intelligence (AI) foreshadow even greater capabilities, and IP intercom systems are well-equipped to pave the way for even better functionality. Embracing new technologies ensures a system will continue to be applicable into the future.

Is the intercom easy to use?

An intuitive interface and human-centered design allow customers to unlock doors easily on-the-go

An intuitive interface and human-centered design allow customers to unlock doors easily on-the-go. Simplified user interfaces take advantage of the capabilities of smartphones. Many IP video intercom systems now offer mobile app integration, allowing users to monitor and control their intercom system from their smartphone or tablet. This can be especially useful for high-end residential projects where residents may be away from their homes for extended periods. Also, any calls will be forwarded to a mobile phone number if the app account is offline. Everything is also accessible through the cloud.

Video and audio quality is another aspect of usability. Many IP video intercom systems now offer high-resolution video and audio, allowing users to see and hear visitors with exceptional clarity. This can be particularly important for high-end residential projects where residents demand the highest level of security and convenience. Other video enhancements include wide-angle video images with minimal distortion, and great night vision. Users can also connect the intercom system to a network video recording (NVR) system to get an HD video record.

Is the system easy to install?

Intercoms that are connected to the cloud and the Internet of Things simplify installation and do not require physical wiring in a building. Once installed, an intercom connects via WiFi to the cloud, where all operations and integration with other systems are managed.

In effect, the intercom “finds” the cloud and sends any needed information to connect to the system. In buildings with legacy analog wiring, an IP system can leverage the existing infrastructure to transition to IP.

Does the system provide maintenance and support?

Upgrading an intercom system no longer involves a service call or even a visit to the physical location. Cloud connectivity enables maintenance and support operations to be performed over-the-air (OTA); that is, remotely by an integrator and through the cloud without needing to leave the office.

Customers of intercom systems should expect robust after-sales service from their integrators and/or manufacturers, including one-on-one support.

Is the system aesthetically designed for modern homes?

A smart home control station using AI and IoT technology enables intelligent control

Product design is an important element of usability. Products offering a futuristic aesthetic and that project a clean and modern sophistication are desirable for installation in prestigious buildings and high-end installations. Performance is also a priority. A smart home control station using AI and IoT technology enables intelligent control.

The device can be operated via touchscreen, buttons, voice, or app, individually configured, and controlled with just one button. When given the cue “I’m back,” the lights in the house are gradually switched on and the security level is automatically lowered. For example, the DNAKE Smart Central Control Panel won the Red Dot Design Award, designating products that are aesthetically appealing, functional, smart and/or innovative. Other elements of product design include IK (impact protection) and IP (moisture and dust protection) ratings.

Focusing on Innovation

Continuing rapid innovation in hardware and software ensures that an intercom system manufacturer adapts to the evolution of customer preferences and other changes in the market.

Frequent new product introductions are one indicator that a company is focused on research and development (R&D) and on embracing the latest technologies in the home automation market.
