Developments in the IP video camera market have a direct impact on the other components in a system. With the emergence of higher definition cameras – whether 4K cameras or 8K or even higher – the market now needs back-end devices that can perform the decoding work. Also, more intelligence is needed, including smart functions such as people counting and heat mapping – and there are more functions on the way, according to video manufacturer Dahua.
The adoption of a stronger algorithm (i.e., H.265) will facilitate development in the industry, and Dahua has already established a complete solution based on H.265.
Most people are over-optimistic about cloud storage, according to Dahua. The fact is, unsafe or unstable networks can cause a great loss of data in some cases unless there is a local backup, according to the company.

Other manufacturers are also responding to changes in the market. Panasonic says the move to higher-megapixel cameras and true 4K HD imaging requires more advanced compression recording algorithms as well as the flexibility to support storage onboard cameras or “at the edge.” Panasonic’s advanced NVRs incorporate distributed processing and H.264 compression algorithms to improve bandwidth utilisation while also accepting HPEG-4 and JPEG formats to allow simultaneous, live viewing of multiple cameras.
Remote and mobile access by the end user and the integrator is also a growing trend. Installers and end users want to be able to use their choice of device – smart phone, tablet or PC – to access their NVRs and set parameters for recording or viewing recorded streams. Panasonic NVRs support mobile access and control via apps that enable mobile camera monitoring and recorder management through compatible smart phones and tablets.
