Z-Wave ecosystem hits new milestones with new partnerships and IoT devices

Published on 31 December, 2015
Z-Wave Alliance's rapidly growing ecosystem extends its strong position in the professional security and smart home channel
Z-Wave’s goals for 2016 include looking at partnerships, launching IoT devices and giving consumers resources

With a year of steady growth, new partnerships, a new online consumer education initiative and augmented security for Z-Wave IoT devices, the Z-Wave Alliance announces year-end milestones. Since the beginning of 2015, the Z-Wave ecosystem has seen almost 100 new member companies, the addition of 250 certified devices and another 15 million smart home devices shipped into the marketplace.

Parks Associates data shows that 1 in 5 consumers in the US currently own smart home devices with global growth on the rise and residential connected devices will generate approximately 11 million support requests from consumers. With that in mind, the Z-Wave Alliance and its members are increasingly looking at how to best educate, serve and support new users coming into the smart home market. Launching, the consumer portal for tips, best practices and frequently asked questions about Z-Wave smart home solutions, the Alliance's Consumer Working Group is working to give consumers tools to find the best possible smart home solution for their lives.

Z-Wave’s goals for 2016

"2015 has been an extraordinary year of growth for the Z-Wave platform with market adoption at its peak in home security, experiencing growth in the telco industry and poised for take-off at consumer retail," said Mitchell Klein, executive director of the Z-Wave Alliance, "Our goals for 2016 include looking at partnerships to ensure Z-Wave is part of all smart home solutions, launching an IoT security framework to make Z-Wave devices the most secure on the market and giving consumers resources to help them understand benefits of the smart home."

With the creation of a new installer training program and integrator level membership as well as global partnerships with telcos like Unicom in China and Orange in France, the entire Z-Wave ecosystem has experienced expansion in core and emerging markets for the smart home and residential IoT. The launch of the Z-Wave Security 2 (S2) framework means the Z-Wave standard is now at the forefront of IoT security for residential smart home products and homes with Z-Wave devices moving forward will be virtually un-hackable.

"2016 will see a surge of new, smart, connected products entering the market. While end-point products may appeal to consumers, real value is derived by giving consumers access to an established ecosystem of products," said Tom Kerber, Director, Research, Home Controls & Energy at Parks Associates. "The Z-Wave Alliance's rapidly growing ecosystem extends its strong position in the professional security and smart home channel."

Z-Wave Alliance membership

The Z-Wave Alliance membership has grown by 30% in 2015, resulting in the addition of more than 100 new members to the organisation's roster. Embracing a diverse membership, the Alliance launched a new certified training program aimed at giving installers tools and best practices for deploying Z-Wave smart home solutions as well as a new membership level in the Alliance for the integrator community. In addition to the installer program, the Alliance continued to support startups and entrepreneurs in the smart home space through its Z-Wave Labs competition. The Alliance named 6 companies or individuals as Z-Wave Labs winners and awarded them full membership and Z-Wave IoT developer kits.
