Ensure health and safety compliance and protect investment in equipment and materials.
Users manage the high-definition surveillance system from their desktops using Avigilon Control Center (ACC) with High-Definition Stream Management (HDSM). The company installed Avigilon HD cameras ranging from 2 MP to 5 MP to monitor the exterior and interior of the plant and installed an Avigilon Network Video Recorder (NVR) to store up to 12 days of continuous surveillance footage. An Avigilon 5 MP H.264 HD camera monitors the main entrance and 100,000 square foot parking area to capture the license plates of vehicles entering the site, while several Avigilon 2 MP H.264 HD cameras are permanently fixed on high-capacity manufacturing machines to ensure target production rates. The site directors also leverage Avigilon Control Center Mobile to monitor the system remotely from their iPhones.
Users can successfully investigate incidents within minutes of occurring to ensure health and safety compliance and better protect valuable materials stored onsite. Salop Design and Engineering has effectively ensured health and safety compliance by using video footage as a training tool to ensure employees follow industry procedures to prevent future accidents. The company has also improved stock control by 100 percent and cut the cost of covering stolen or damaged materials. Salop Design and Engineering can monitor productivity of high-capacity machines to meet target run rates and quickly and accurately determine cause of production delays to offset potential losses.

Salop Design and Engineering protects assets and ensures health and safety compliance at manufacturing facility with Avigilon high-definition surveillance system

In business for more than 50 years, Salop Design and Engineering Limited is one the United Kingdom’s leading manufacturers of metal pressings and assemblies for the automotive, domestic appliances, and construction industries. Employing more than 120 personnel out of its modern, purpose-built factory located on the outskirts of Shrewsbury, Shropshire, the company has an annual turnover of £13 million. Salop Design and Engineering has invested more than £500,000 into its manufacturing facility this year to efficiently meet global customer demand. To protect its investment in equipment and materials and ensure health and safety compliance, Salop Design and Engineering deployed the Avigilon high-definition surveillance system throughout its facility for transparent, broad coverage of the entire production process.
Protecting assets and employees
With no previous security solution in place, Salop Design and Engineering began shopping around for a surveillance system that could deliver broad, yet detailed, coverage of its 80,000 square foot facility. “With the value of scrap metal continuing to skyrocket, we are at even greater risk of theft, so we knew we had to do something quickly,” explained Christopher Greenough, director of production at Salop Design and Engineering. On the recommendation of Technical Services (Shropshire) Ltd., a local provider of surveillance system design, installation, and support, the company chose to deploy the Avigilon highdefinition surveillance system for its superior image quality, ease-of-use, and reliability.
Health and safety compliance
“Our industry is heavily regulated with regards to how equipment is handled and maintained,” explained Greenough. Employees must wear ear defenders, special gloves, and eye protection at all times. “We use the Avigilon high-definition surveillance system to make sure everyone is working safely.” In the past, Greenough had to rely on witness testimonials when investigating an accident. “The Avigilon system delivers the facts quickly and accurately to help us verify the cause and determine next steps for future prevention.” In fact, Salop Design and Engineering uses the video footage as a training tool to review health and safety regulations and ensure compliance moving forward.
Protecting investment and boosting production
Because Salop Design and Engineering invests heavily in raw materials such as sheet metal, coil, and blanks to the tune of £3 million annually, asset protection is a top priority. “Three years ago, a pack of blanks was taken at a loss of £3,000,” noted Greenough, who added that if they had installed the Avigilon system at that time, he could have easily pinpointed the exact time and location of the theft to recover the loss. The company also monitors vehicles that enter the site to further reduce the possibility of theft. “Since deploying the Avigilon system, we’ve improved stock control by 100 percent and dramatically cut the cost of covering stolen or damaged materials.” With dedicated Avigilon HD cameras fixed on high-capacity machines, Salop Design and Engineering can also ensure greater productivity, directly boosting profitability. In one case, a part of a customer’s tool fell and broke while running on a machine. “After a close look at the footage, we could see that it wasn’t our fault and as a result, we were able to offset the associated costs.”
"Easy to use with many
advanced features, the
Avigilon Control Center
software is so slick that
it sells itself"
Without a full time security staff, Salop Design and Engineering needed a cost-effective, yet intuitive way to ensure the ongoing safety and security of its manufacturing plant. “Avigilon offers a complete solution for a family-run business like ours that has looked at all the options,” said Greenough, who along with two other directors, manages the surveillance system from his desktop using Avigilon Control Center with HDSM. The company installed Avigilon HD cameras ranging from 2 MP to 5 MP and installed an Avigilon Network Video Recorder (NVR) to store up to 12 days of continuous surveillance footage. “We installed the Avigilon 5 MP H.264 HD camera to monitor the main entrance, 100,000 square foot parking area, and to capture the license plates of the 20 to 30 vehicles that enter our site daily.” Several Avigilon 2 MP H.264 HD cameras are permanently fixed on high-capacity machines to ensure target production rates while the remaining cameras monitor other high-traffic areas throughout the building. All directors also leverage ACC Mobile to monitor the system remotely from their iPhones.
“Easy to use with many advanced features, the Avigilon Control Center software is so slick that it sells itself,” commented Greenough, who after a quick training session mastered the system. “I can set one Avigilon 2 MP camera on a wide view and zoom in to capture up to eight customised, detailed views – both live and recorded –without having to physically move the camera.” Leveraging the Avigilon Control Center software, Greenough can successfully investigate an incident within minutes of it occurring. “We can also easily share video evidence with the police, who can conclude their investigations with greater confidence and success.
A Stand-out solution
Impressed with the image quality, search capabilities, and reliability of the Avigilon highdefinition surveillance system, Greenough proudly shows it off to customers when visiting the manufacturing facility. “If you are a big automotive supplier and you have valuable materials on site, you need to take security into account,” concluded Greenough. “After seeing how robust, easy to use, and powerful the Avigilon high-definition surveillance system is, our customers can easily see why it is such a standout solution.
