Narita International Airport chooses GE Security Homeland protection CTX 9000 DSi explosives detection systems

Published on 5 December 2006

Narita deployment of 27 GE CTX to be largest CT-based inline luggage screening installation in Asia

GE Homeland Protection Inc., a business of GE Security, today announced that it has won a contract to supply 27 CTX 9000 DSi advanced technology explosives detection systems for checked luggage screening to Narita International Airport Corporation (NAA).  Narita International Airport is one of the largest international airport hubs in Asia, serving more than 31 million passengers per year.

When installed, these advanced technology explosives detection systems will make up the largest CT-based inline baggage screening system in Asia.  GE Security will provide these state of the art explosive detection systems for checked luggage screening as part of the Narita terminal one and two reconstruction and expansion efforts.  They are expected to help Narita International Airport achieve one of its top business priorities of ensuring passenger safety.

"I am pleased to announce that Narita International Airport Corporation has selected the latest state-of-the-art explosive detection system from GE Security for deployment as a part of NAA's strategy for an inline screening system requiring 100% explosive detection," said Mr. Shoji Tokuda, senior vice president, Narita International Airport Corporation.  "We expect this latest installation of state-of-the-art EDS and its expected high level of performance will give us the capability to provide maximum security, not only at Narita, but to the entire global air transport network."

"GE Security is pleased Narita International Airport has selected the CTX 9000 DSi for its explosives detection system in the north wing of terminal one and in terminal two," said Dennis Cooke, president, GE Security's Homeland Protection business.  "With the largest installation in the region, Narita leads a growing trend across Asia, and around the world, to the use of advanced technology inline baggage screening based on the CTX 9000 DSi to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of bag screening while maintaining passenger satisfaction."

Tokuda added, "With this installation, Narita International Airport continues its evolution, contributing further to its reputation as the world's safest airport.  We extend our appreciation to all travellers for their continued patronage and look forward to serving them at Narita International Airport."

The GE CTX 9000 DSi system represents the latest in CTX technology.  Designed to integrate with airport baggage handling systems (BHS), the CTX 9000 DSi system is TSA-certified and is well suited to fast-paced airport environments.  It is the highest operational throughput explosives detection system designed for BHS integration and its meter-wide conveyor belt and large tunnel opening can accommodate both large and standard-size bags.

Designed for ease of operation and service, with multiplexing capabilities and a low false alarm rate, the CTX 9000 DSi system provides an excellent investment for high-volume airports.  Its advanced technology allows customers to efficiently and accurately identify challenging substances.

With more than 100 years of history in Japan, GE is one of the country's largest multi-national employers.  Approximately 8,000 employees support more than 40 business operations, including sectors of the aviation, healthcare, energy, consumer and commercial finance, and advanced materials industries.  "It is with great pleasure that we partner with Narita International Airport on this important aviation security project that takes advantage of GE's technology leadership.  GE is dedicated to serving Japan's aviation and aviation security needs and, through projects such as this one, strengthening cooperation with Japanese customers and partners," said Nobuhiko Ito, president and CEO, General Electric, Japan, Ltd.

Invision Japan Corporation, an independent Japanese corporation that has been working to promote CTX technology in Japan for more than a decade, acted as GE Homeland Protection's local representative in the Narita International Airport purchase contract.  As the distributor of GE's CTX products in Japan, Invision Japan Corporation will also participate in deploying and providing critical life-cycle support for these CTX systems.
