Axis to highlight value of network video in loss prevention at Retail Solutions 2007

Published on 5 June 2007

Axis Communications, the global leader in the network video market, will demonstrate a number of new network video-based retail solutions at Retail Solutions 2007.  Axis has worked with a number leading suppliers in the retail market to build network video into key retail loss prevention solutions such as Point Of Sales (POS) exception analysis.

At the stand, Axis will be showcasing its latest network cameras and highlighting their benefits for the retail sector, such as the new AXIS 211M Network Camera which uses megapixel resolution to achieve exceptional image quality for close-up surveillance.

Two new megapixel dome network cameras, the AXIS 216MFD and AXIS 216MFD-V both include a 1.3 megapixel sensor with progressive scan, which reduces motion blur in comparison with traditional analogue cameras.  The standard AXIS 216MFD version offers a tamper-resistant plastic cover, suitable for indoor video surveillance, whereas the AXIS 216MFD-V features a robust, vandal-resistant casing with a metal base specifically adapted for indoor environments subject to vandalism.  For the most demanding retail applications, the AXIS 223M Network Camera is a 2.0 megapixel camera that delivers exceptional image detail - more than four times the number of pixels compared to a high-resolution analogue CCTV camera.

Axis has teamed up with its partners to demonstrate retail applications including:

  • IBM with its smart surveillance system (S3) suite focused on advanced indexing and analytics to support loss prevention and fraud detection
  • Extenda with its recently launched Observer loss prevention  management tool
  • Milestone with its retail solution Transact which integrates POS or ATM transaction data with network video surveillance

Axis, in conjunction with Application Development Partner Cognimatics, will also be demonstrating its own people counting solution using two AXIS 212PTZ Network Cameras and people counting software in both cameras to collect data about people movements on and off Axis' stand at the show.  The solution running on the network is based on images captured by a camera.  The data can be made available in real-time information or stored for later analysis.

Axis will also offer a glimpse into the future of retail technology in a series of 45-minute seminars throughout the show.  During these in-depth seminars Axis, together with some of its key retail solutions partners including IBM, Sysrepublic, Milestone and Anixter will illustrate the advantages of integrating high quality video into key retail solutions.  Solutions likely to be discussed will include POS integration, heat mapping, zone monitoring, flow control, logistics and store management, slip and fall analysis, fraud detection and Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) incident handling, all using high quality video to support these offerings.

Steve Gorski, managing director, Axis Communications (UK) Limited, explains:  "There are so many types of systems out there now to help retailers maximise customers' retail experience or reduce shrinkage and we are discovering many of these systems would be more powerful if integrated with a network video system."

Mark Gould, managing director of the Irish book store chain and Axis customer Hughes & Hughes, will present a Business Track seminar on Wednesday 6th June at 3.20pm.  Mr Gould will be talking about the benefits that his company has derived from deploying Axis network cameras and software across many of its book stores in Ireland.  Hughes & Hughes recently won the contract to provide bookstores into Heathrow Terminal Five.

Axis recently appointed Johan Åkesson, business development director, retail sector.  Mr Åkesson will be in attendance throughout the show.  He is focused on building Axis' offering and presence in the retail sector globally.  He is also responsible for identifying new strategic partners in the sector.

Steve Gorski summarises:  "We are very excited about exhibiting at such an important retail show as Retail Solutions for the first time.  It marks an increased focus by Axis globally on this key market.  We will be talking to retailers about the benefits of integrating network video systems into the array of IT solutions that retailers are already using to understand customer behaviour and reduce shrinkage."
