The challenges
The goal of Colombia National Police(CNP) is to develop integrated security system that can protect handle state-level police properties and activities. Within the newly-developing system, access control plays critical role in physical security over state-wide police properties. Particularly for high-security areas, an intelligent access control system was needed for precise identification, real-time monitoring and seamless control & data interchange over multiple locations.
CNP also desired a system that controls multiple zone and location settings for larger properties and required a solution that can prevent fake ID's and unauthorised entries. Moreover, in broader scope, the Colombian government plans to digitise fingerprint from every citizen and the CNP wishes to use such DB not only for forensic investigations but also for access controlling police properties by pre-listing criminals' biometric information on the system.
SUPREMA solution
As for the CNP's newly developed access control system, Suprema provides fingerprint-based IP access control device, the BioStation.

The BioStation is capable of handling up to 50,000 users in a system and provides industry- leading matching speed and false rate. It also offers versatile interfaces like Wiegand and RS485 hence enables seamless integration with ordinary card- based access control system. Therefore CNP have a choice to put biometric access control only for the higher security areas and less important areas with card readers. BioStation also offers server- matching feature when privacy is an issue. With its TCP-IP interface, the fingerprints are no longer needed to be stored on devices.
The fingerprint input transferred to server and is matched to fingerprint DB storage at server level. All fingerprints data in the system are encrypted to prohibit for higher security and Suprema supports scalable fingerprint template helping much faster matching speed among huge fingerprint data stored in the server.
The CNP project has successfully implemented to police forces in 10 major locations like Bogota, Medellin, Facatatica. And Colombian police bureau has plans to extend integrated IP-biometric security solution to nationwide police forces.
