These are a selection of Hikvision white papers:
As the global market leader in video surveillance products, Hikvision Digital Technology Co., Ltd., continues to strive for the enhancement of its products through application of the latest in technology. H.264+ Advanced Video Coding (AVC) optimises compression beyond the current H.264 standard. Through the combination of intelligent analysis technology with predictive encoding, noise suppression, and long-term bitrate control, Hikvision is meeting the demand for higher resolution at reduced bandwidths. Hikvision customers will benefit from the lower bitrate provided by H.264+, which plays a significant role in reducing bandwidth requirements, improving network throughput, and savings in security system costs.
When security cameras are deployed, they are positioned to provide coverage over the scenes of most interest. Within the field of view of the camera, some areas are of greater importance than others and some areas are really of no interest at all. This is more and truer as the resolution of cameras increase from the traditional D1 resolution to the 1.3MP and 2MP that is standard today, to 5MP and more. These cameras now either cover more area with a single camera or provide more detail within the traditional field of view. The increasing resolution, even with improved encoding efficiencies, requires more and more bandwidth and storage.
The video image data produced by an image sensor or the scanner circuitry of a digital camera contain both the signal as well as the noise information. Noise is always present in an image, especially when the images are produced in a low light environment. The signal-to-noise ratio is used to compare the level of signal to the level of background noise. A higher ratio means better image quality. While the existence of noise is a critical factor in image quality, it also adds an extra burden to encoding process as well. It significantly increases the data size for transmission and storage, resulting in the waste of bandwidth and storage space. Accordingly, reducing the noise from an image is a critical function of video processing technology.
Since surveillance cameras are often installed outside and are expected to stand the test of 24/7 operation, they are frequently exposed to strong light, rain, snow, and fog. These environmental conditions have a great influence on the image quality of the surveillance camera, especially the fog. The aerosol particle containing moisture and fumes in the fog is the main cause for the degrading of the image quality. The low contrast ratio when foggy decreases the image quality so that the details of the scene can’t be seen clearly. Therefore, defog technology is one of the imperative technologies for outdoor surveillance.
H.264/AVC standard was published by the JVT group, which was co-founded by ITU-T VCEG and ISO/IEC MPEG, in 2003. By adopting new technologies in the video compression field, H.264/AVC outperforms its predecessor, MPEG-2, with its high performance and moderate compression complexity level. Now, it has already taken the place of MPEG-2 and become the most popular compression standard in the world.
In many practical surveillance applications, the intensity of illumination with a scene can vary excessively. Images taken by standard cameras always seem to have an overexposed foreground or too dark a background due to the limitation of a camera sensors’ sensitivity. Over the course of a day, the situation can change with different areas of the scene being over or underexposed. What is required in this situation is a Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) camera.
